so my story begins with this motor, if you saw my other thread you saw all my extras with the motor
http://tinypic.com/idhnhv.jpg
going in this car
http://tinypic.com/idhnra.jpg
i wanted to prep the motor a bit so i check out the oil pan and saw this
http://tinypic.com/idho3m.jpg
VERY big dent, took it off and thankfully i found the oil pickup was not damaged, i picked up a new oil pan and put it on
http://tinypic.com/idhpnc.jpg
i assumed that i needed a new clutch just to be safe since the motor is out of the car so i picked up a exedy oem spec clutch kit, but to my surprise while taking off the tranny i saw this very shiny purple thing blind me
http://tinypic.com/idhq8l.jpg
yup thats a exedy hyper single clutch/pressure playe/flywheel combo (worth like $1300) i was so happy, this front clip had already gave me so many other surprises, i wonder what else i can find
well heres a pic of how my car sits with the ka
http://tinypic.com/idhqpe.jpg
http://tinypic.com/idhqte.jpg
i will measure again with the motor out and again with the RB in so you guys can see the comparision(BTW im slammed on apexi world sport dampers 8kf-6kr i believe)
heres the intercooler shot just for the hell of it its 24x9x3
http://tinypic.com/idhrb8.jpg
now the real start
http://tinypic.com/idhsms.jpg
this thing is not gonna be in there for much longer
http://tinypic.com/idhsup.jpg
some more progress, my car looks so ugly
http://tinypic.com/idhtt4.jpg
http://tinypic.com/idhwlx.jpg
thats about where i ended the night, wiring harness does not want to come out, i was tired and hungry so i decided to call it a night
my deadline goal is to get it running by christmas, i might not update too much on weekends since i work pretty much all day fri-sun but mon-thurs i will be working on it as much as i can. thanks for looking and if anyone has tips on how to get the harness out it would be great!

Awsome, I would like to get your aim, or email, and when you get some time I would like to talk about your swap, I also have a RB25 clip, a series 2 I believe. It is going into my s14 when Im ready. Before I put it in i might upgrade the exhaust and intake mani's and maybe injectors, Ill see what my wallet has in store for it.

Besides that LOOKS AWSOME!

loosen the blower motor and a/c from the firewall and you can kind of pry them off the wall, the harness is actually being pinched by one or the other i cannot recall correctly. but you'll see what you need to do, they're the 10mm bright gold nuts with huge shoulders, can't miss em. remove them then you'll get about 1" worth of play from the ac/blower and its enough to pull the harness out. good luck with the swap bro!

The harness has a ziptie holding it up by the ac. Yank on the harness away from the ac unit till you hear a pop. Then the harness will be free to pull out from the engine bay. Nice come up btw on the clutch,

kouki_s14

yea im keeping the stock intake manifold for now
its late so i will post pictures next time, but i finished gettin the harness out, took off my shifter, drained everything, just about ready to pull the motor, just need to get the driveshaft off the diff, which is giving me trouble (help/ideas here would be appreciated!!), i only had a little while to work on it today since i got off work late and i have work early tomorrow
progress is slower than expect, but i hope to have the RB sitting in there by tuesday or wednesday depending on how long my work day is tomorrow

o yea for anyone with questions about the swap my AIM is henrys14k
i will do my best to help those planning to swap themselves, i probably wont be too helpful until im actually done with the swap, cuz i wont really know everything but ill do my best to help until then, and i sent my harness out to get wired professionally so sorry i cant help anyone with wiring

will post more later but thats it for tonight

heres a small update, didnt really get much done today but here you go

took out the shifter
http://tinypic.com/igf8ys.jpg
http://tinypic.com/igf95y.jpg
got the harness out, thanks for the help and info, this forum is great! i missed a few bolts on the blower and after i took them off i got enough slack for the harness to squeeze out
http://tinypic.com/igf98n.jpg
got the driveshaft off, but it was dam hard with the small amount of space and only being able to use a open wrench, had to use a technique of putting two of the open wrenchs together to lengthen it and get enough leverage to loosen it, it works really well for the nuts and bolts that require a open wrench
http://tinypic.com/igf9fk.jpg
here is where i left it
http://tinypic.com/igf9yf.jpg
i would have pulled the motor today, but i was workin by myself today and it doesnt seem like a good idea to pull the motor without at least another person helping you, so its gettin put off until tomorrow

sorry if it seems like im posting useless pictures and such, but flame me if you want (already had shit said on club240), but i felt like posting the pictures i took as my personal log. deal with it or dont read this thread

and i got a few pm's about where and how much i got my motor from/for.
just so i dont get a million other messages ill post it here
my uncle owns a junkyard (winstar wrecking) that deals with alot of 240's and he imports crates of motors (SR, RB, 2JZ, 3SGTE....) so i got it from him, many people in the socal area probably deals with him for parts/motors and such and as for the price i cannot say since there are people who buy from him and i do not want to say anything he wouldnt want me to say (i did not get it for free i paid with my own hard earned cash, i saved for years). it was funny, i've been into 240's for years and never knew my family had this kind of business, call me lucky, cuz i am but i am also very grateful

and heres a list of parts i bought that most people out there will need
also included are some parts for an auto-manual

mount kit - $1,000.00 (syko performance)
walbro fuel pump - $90 (group buy)
SS clutch line - $22 (group buy)
clutch hardline - $50 (dealer/junkyard)
Intercooler - $200 (anywhere)
IC Piping -$350 (custom, im guessin here since i havnt had it done yet)
Wiring - $375 (its more expensive cuz mine is OBDII and auto)
Clutch cylinders - $71.00 (ebay)
clutch - $160.00 ( i have mine i just bought, but obviously i dont need it anymore so if anyone wants it, Exedy oem spec, includes pressure plate, clutch, alignment tool, pilot and throwout bearing)
clutch bracket/pedal - $50 (junkyard)
FAL electric fans - $250.00 (anywhere)
Z32 Fuel Filter - $10 (anywhere)
nismo shift knob - $40 (dealer)
shifter trim - $55 (dealer)
oil + filter - $45 (anywhere)
gear oil - $30 (anywhere)
coolant - $10 (anywhere)
Spark plugs x6 - $10 (anywhere)
new oil pan - $150 (dealer or someone that deals with RB's)

thats a total of $2818, so around 3k ON TOP OF THE MOTOR is what you should expect to spend on this swap, thats doing all the work except the wiring yourself, you guys can figure out what you need or dont

i think thats about it for now, anymore questions pm me or reply here

here's my update for today
i had some help today so i went on to pull the motor, its weird how the camera flash made the exhaust manifold look red hot
http://tinypic.com/il8z6q.jpg
then bam it disappeared!
http://tinypic.com/il8z8n.jpg
and here it is torn from its home
http://tinypic.com/il8zdh.jpg
after that was done i decided to go on removing the crossmember but on the last bolt that connects the LCA to the crossmember this happened
http://tinypic.com/il8zms.jpg
the culprit :squint:
http://tinypic.com/il8znl.jpg
i was about to go pick up my friends air tools but it was somewhat late and i did not want to wake my sister so once again its getting put off until tomorrow

although i do not have experience with the other companies mount kits i would have to put syko performance first because its been tested and retested and it does not use welded brackets and such for mounting the motor. the kit utilizes the RB crossmember just with some custom mounts so the engine sits in the ideal position. i have seen the mounts in person and i will post pictures of how it sits when the motor is in there. included in the kit is a downpipe, which you may need, and having one of this quality will easily cost you $200+
ALSO syko performance's customer service is BY FAR the best i have EVER dealt with. Dave and Gary are willing to help in many ways other companies would never even consider. i call and i IM them and they dont ever mind. i ask millions of questions, ask drift freaq. i bug him all the time. hell he even bought me some food when i went to give him my harness to wire up. now thats a group of nice guys to deal with!
thank you dave and gary for all your help so far and in the future!

thats about it for now

so today was the day the motor was ready to be dropped in place
before all that i got the 240 crossmember off and the R33 xmember on
attached the LCA, rack and pinion, all that good stuff
then i finally got to use some NEW stuff, i put on the motor mounts from syko
http://tinypic.com/im8k78.jpg
after that was ready i moved all hoses/lines as far to the side as possible to give the motor clearance and to make sure i would not crush anything
o yea i also put in the Z32 fuel filter
also i drilled holes to place the clutch master cylinder, i put the clutch pedal in also but i still have to work on puttin the brake pedal in, but thats not too important
the begining...
http://tinypic.com/im8ku1.jpg
then halfway through that i realize that i needed more clearance :duh: so i quickly pulled the radiator out then it began again
http://tinypic.com/im8mm9.jpg
after hours or who knows how long of moving motor up down, jack on tranny up and down, AND moving the front and rear of the car up and down i finally got it squeezed in. i also had to take off the lower pully to help with my clearance issues, without those in the way my job would have been a lot easier, its up to you guys if anyone else wants to go through the hassle of taking those pieces off. for me the lower (A/C one i believe i dont remember) was enough for me to clear my mistake was i did not position the chain at the ideal position for the angle of the motor and tranny to slide in, so it took some work to make it fit but it finally did
http://tinypic.com/im8n01.jpg
in that picture the motor is not yet in the mounts, its still held up by the hoist
after 20-30 minutes i finally got the motor to slide into the mounts and it sits very nicely. seems like it is WAY lower than the KA
http://tinypic.com/im8nzs.jpg
http://tinypic.com/im8pzn.jpg
i would have taken more pictures but my camera ran out of batteries plus it was late, the tranny was not bolted up yet (sitting on 3 ton jack), i would have to lower the car to take true shots of how the engine sits n all that, so i called it a night at about 2-3AM, the hard part is done, now its time for the little things, driveshft, shifter, finish pedals, hook up the hoses, fuel pump etc
i should get the harness back from syko soon and once the intercooler piping is done it will be ready to fire up! im so happy yet so sore and tired now, whew that was a longggg night

on a side note, this took me hours to do (with help), all the stuff like the xmember i took about the entire day, but with some breaks, but unless u have about 10 hours of free time dont try it just yet

more updates to come....

you will have plenty of room for a strut brace if your using the Greddy intake manifold. We will see shortly with Henry's car with the stock manifold . Well I said earlier I thought it might clear but on closer inspection of henrys car it will most likely not with the stock manifold.

well i havnt updated my progress in awhile, been tired and working on it a lot and i have been too tired to upload and post, but here my progress for the last few days

i got the downpipe on, bolted up the driveshaft, bolted the tranny in, finished the clutch pedal
i was going to put in a brake pedal but after i really looked at what needed to be done i decided not to. believe me its not worth the trouble, just cut your stock pedal, JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, dont even try it's a waste of time.
here are some pics on how the engine sits
http://tinypic.com/ioq9kz.jpg
http://tinypic.com/ioq9me.jpg
here how the shifter sits, i took it at a bad angle, but it sits pretty centered, its off by very little and i can adjust the mounts to center it more but im fine with the way it is, its just me being lazy
http://tinypic.com/ioq9sh.jpg
my original plan was to buy FAL dual fans but i came across some fluidyne electric fans for cheap so i bought two of em and since they are not as thin as the FAL, i had clearance issues with the motor. these fans however lets you change them from puller to pusher by popping out a pin and flipping the fan. so i change both to pushers and mounted it in the front. it was a tight squeeze but it fit
http://tinypic.com/ioqh6f.jpg

gary finished my harness and came down with dave to help me with little things, he needed to solder some wires inside the car and told me a few things about the harness
then i asked him what i was supposed to do about the throttle cable since it doesnt fit, heres a little write up on it since he wanted to document how to do it also

first take out the two 10 mm bolts from the inside, then the plastic bracket from the engine bay and pull the entire cable out, also pick up some of these cable clamps/stoppers from home depot or something( gary brought some for me, thanks!)
http://tinypic.com/ioqclh.jpg
then you want a clean cut on the cable to seperate it from the stock clamp/stopper so use a dremel or something that will cut it cleanly, be careful and hold it down with a clamp or something just incase
http://tinypic.com/ioqd6p.jpg
hopefully you got a clean cut like so
http://tinypic.com/ioqdd3.jpg
then pull the cable out from the bracket, just force it, it will come out
http://tinypic.com/ioqdfb.jpg
afterwards cut the rubber tube(plastic and metal inside so use something strong) DO NOT CUT THE THROTTLE CABLE
http://tinypic.com/ioqm44.jpg
we cut it somewhat short because we were not sure on how much to cut at first so we did like 3-4 cuts to make sure we have the proper length
here is an after picture of how long the cable should be if you pull it all the way to one side, give or take 1/4 inch it might vary on S13 but i doubt it
http://tinypic.com/ioqfpt.jpg
http://tinypic.com/ioqfq9.jpg
then make sure you put the insulators and stuff back in the correct order, gary decided to put a washer there to space it out a bit more
but heres how it should look when you have the clamp/stopper on there
http://tinypic.com/ioqjww.jpg
then just put everything back the way you found it
the cable wont route around the engine bay like it used to but it will work just fine, hope this helps some of you, dont thank me, thank gary, because hes the one who told me how to do it and did most of the work, i just followed his instructions

i didnt have a camera for a day so i didn snap picturse of the downpipe or driveshaft, but its not a big deal and you guys could probably care less if i posted those pictures or not, but yeah thats about it

things left to do:
attached all the hoses and misc. stuff
fill the car with fluids
plug in the harness
mount intercooler
get piping made
few other things i cant remember right now
then FIRE IT UP and test drive....

also about the strut brace, i highly doubt it will clear the hood, i dont have one so its not a problem for me, if i were to get one, maybe notch the hood it may fit im not sure since i dont have the hood bolted on right now
once the hood is on and the car is running i will try and see how much actually clearance there is with some puddy or something

forgive the grammer im exhausted from work (both my job and working on the car) after about a week straight of working on it im finally feeling the exhaustion

thats it for now, but still more to come

henry

I haven't heard of this throttle cable issue before. Exactly what was the problem you were experiencing? After reading this thread and looking at the pics, I'm confident I can do a RB25 swap. Last question (for now)....those the RB use the same size oil filter as the KA?

The reason for this is the inner cable is to short, relative to the outer housing for this application. When you extend the inner cable to attach to the throttle body pulley it comes up short.

you will see what we are talking about once the motor is set in there
and YES the RB uses the same oil filter as the KA, which is also the same filter as the Z32 and probably a few others too

So this is a mod everyone must do when going thru this swap? j/w because its the first I've heard about this (as I said before)

Ya your motor, sits nearly identical to mine. A strut Bar will smack on the pullie for the throttle. The stock intake manifold on 25's/20's suck balls. and the adapters for gtr manifold are to expensive.

as far as i know yes it is a mod you must do.
you really shouldnt worry about it too much, since i have the measurements for you here it will take 20-30mins max.
people probably have not mentioned it since it wasnt exactly a huge mod and not that difficult if you know what to do and since its written out here it should be even easier.

i was going to put in a brake pedal but after i really looked at what needed to be done i decided not to. believe me its not worth the trouble, just cut your stock pedal, JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, dont even try it's a waste of time.

I did this when I did an SR swap and 5-speed conversion on my old 95. I found that the cut pedal felt too awkward and close to the clutch pedal. It was driving me nuts so I picked up a brake pedal at the junk yard. Installation was a PITA but I'm happy now.

That's because you cut it wrong. I cut mine and has perfect spacing. However, out of anal retentiveness.. I'm going to put in a manual pedal.

well i took the weekend off as a break since i worked daily for over a week and was a bit worn out
there isnt exactly many more pictures i can post since it's really all little things left to do
i got the harness through and all plugged up, for the most part, i got a few plugs i cant quite figure out where they go yet
tomorrow im going to buy oil, coolant and all that stuff, plug up all the hoses then work on intercooler and source someone who can make me some piping for it
then just gotta piece back together my car and maybe get some engine cleaner and shine up the motor a bit if im bored
ill take pictures when its all done

well heres my update
lately i've been working a bit slower since i've been worn out and its all small tedious things left to do
but heres a major part of my car done
here i positioned the intercooler to about where i wanted it to sit
http://tinypic.com/izubzs.jpg
the size is a 24x9x3 if anyone was wondering
and it fit pretty dam well, i had to take my bumper support to get trimmed, but the trimming was very minimal
here are some pictures on what was cut
http://tinypic.com/izucdh.jpg
then it was welded all the way across to keep the structure of it
its ugly i know the welder didnt have a plasma cutter and used a torch, but hell it worked
http://tinypic.com/izucn6.jpg
and it jus squeezed in there perfectly
http://tinypic.com/izucus.jpg
gary (syko performance) came down again to help me with the piping he found some extra pieces of pipe and stuff he had laying around and picked some more up from his piping guy and amazingly we found enough pieces to fit together an entire kit. of course we needed to get some pieces cut and welded together but it work out perfectly considering i didnt have the tools to cut or weld, we got it marked and gary had it cut and welded from his people
http://tinypic.com/izud0m.jpg
while gary was gone cutting and welding i worked on cutting the holes
http://tinypic.com/izufra.jpg
i know its not the perfect holes but i did not have a big enough hole saw
i found some plastic dip spray at home depot that i painted the edges with
it is kind of a thick rubber compound made into a spray, it gave the edges a softer smoother feel to them so it would not cut into the piping and at the same time preventing rust
http://tinypic.com/izug55.jpg
that side went dead center of where the battery sat so now i gotta relocated the battery to the trunk, i guess it isnt a bad idea since this motor does weigh a bit more, more time and money i kind of did not want to spend now, but eh gotta do what i gotta do
finally measure everything up and got the intercooler mounted
i used a aluminum bar from home depot drilled some holes and ran it across the ic, heres how it looks
http://tinypic.com/izugep.jpg
then with the support on, this is really where you can see the uglyness in the cutting and welding, but im not perfectioness, it works thats all the matters to me and you cant see it much with the bumper skin on
http://tinypic.com/izul42.jpg
then i fitted on the bumper support and the bumper skin to see how it looked and how it fit
http://tinypic.com/izuiy8.jpg
pretty clean but i wanted a more sleeper and less cop attracting look so i made some marks and did this
http://tinypic.com/izuib5.jpg
its not gonna have any real impact on the cooling since only the face is painted, lightly might i add, and the inner fins will still be doing it job with paint free surfaces
heres it is with the bumper support
heres how it looks with the bumper on
http://tinypic.com/izukw4.jpg

i did a few more things after that but nothing really worth taking pictures of
now i gotta install the fuel pump, relocate battery buy new longer fuel hoses, wire fans, clean intercooler piping, fill fluids, and prolly few others things im missing and then cross my fingers as i turn the key

hahahhahha drift freaq is Dave, we will be happy to support you anyway that we can. On the other hand we do not have the time to help everyone in person. We helped henry because he was the documenting the installation and we have gotten to know him personally.
We can walk through it and clarfiy questions you might have about it, and we are around for tech support.

i really appreciate both of them coming out to help me, i admit im lucky
ONLY if you buy the syko kit i can try and swing by people's houses and help gary and dave's customers out, if you dont buy the syko kit feel free to ask me for help, but i wont have the motivation to go out of my way to help you since you didnt buy this great kit! haha, just one way of showing my appreciation

im almost there, maybe ill post pictures of the battery relocation, but most likely my next post here in this thread will be starting up the beast!

not much more to come

thanks for looking!

duplicolor high heat stuff, engine enamel i think, it has ceramic material in it to help the heat dissipation

I did some looking and RB25 front clips go for about 2500 not that mutch more than a SR setup. figure in SR nismo mounts, an upgraded elbow, downpipe, and a new driveshaft and the 1K for the RB install kit is quite reasonable. it seems woth the extra couple hundred to go RB to me. but i suppose if your already gone SR it would be harder to justify. that and maintence of 6 cylenders/plugs/wires/little harder to get parts will add up over time.

IT'S RUNNING!
dam is it loud, i need a cat on there with maybe another resonator
it sounds soo evil, the turbo is quite loud along with the bov its scary
havnt really had the chance to test the handling and such
stupid me forgot to take a picture of how it sat before i raised the coilovers
the atmospheric bov is making the car die when the revs are dropped quickly, which is extremely annoying
it revs really fast too and since the flywheel is lighten it drops fast so it dies alot
i had a really long day getting all the little nicks out so im dead tired
heres a pic of how it sits now
http://tinypic.com/j81atj.jpg
it feels like a totally different car and since the clutch is so stiff it was so it was somewhat hard for me to drive, just didnt feel like my car anymore

i dont know how to host videos or mp3 of it so whenever someone is willing to help me with that i will post those

i dont have the energy to type anymore

now i really know why Dave (syko performance) said he wanted to shift up while in 5th gear on the freeway
i was cruising at 70 and some cars passed me pretty quickly so i sped up just to see how it would pull on something passing me while i was in 5th gear (second time on the freeway with the car, first time giving it some gas on the freeway tho)
all i can say is DAM, it pulled up to 90 like nothing and i wasnt even giving it full throttle, maybe like 60-75%
i couldnt stop smiling afterwards
well i guess this thread isnt going to last much longer, just wanted to share some thoughts on the power

Thanks for the compliments Henry, I think this thread is worthy of the faq section, for the sake of the detail you put into the pics of your install.

hmmm
i think the only real details i posted was the throttle cable mod
everything seemed like a take off/out then replace kind of thing

heres a bunch of info some people might find helpful tho

i had no hood clearance problems whatsoever
i thought i might since the IC piping sat kind of high, but its fine

i kind of mickey moused my power steering. i bought about 10-12 feet of 5/16 hoses and ran them straight to the factory tranny cooler, since i could not use the metal loop on the KA crossmember(if you dont know what this is you will when you take out your KA, RB xmember had one but its RHD so thats useless) i zip tied it to placed so it would not get in the way of the pullys. if you want to look clean and professional then you can get a small cooler and hook up the lines to those.
the fuel lines also need to be lengthen, i bought about 5 feet of fuel injector hoses (expensive stuff), YOU NEED the high pressure lines, dont be cheap and risk a leak of fuel
i didnt end up using 5 feet just about 4 was enough
i am 99% sure the top fuel line on the RB motor is return and the bottom one is feed
my two fans up front seem to be doing the job quite well, im not too sure how it will hold up once the socal summer heat hits (im keeping my ac and since the fans are blowing through that first my AC is going to be VERY cold haha so good for summer) but i will see. since its winter now its been fine. with my intercooler piping the way it is i cannot run a FAL puller (note- you cannot run a dual since there is only enough clearance on the passenger side for a fan) Gary(syko performance) helped me out with wiring the fans to turn on with the fuel pump, thanks again. if you take of the AC and notch the radiator support you can push the radiator back for clearance for puller fans
Gary did this on his first RB S14 few year back
umm the stock rack and pinion bolt right up to the R33 xmember
when bolting on the driveshaft USE WRENCHES, well you kind of have to with the driveshaft but for the output shafts on the diff dont use rachets, they flex too much and the bolts came loose on my friends car and it got caught on his ebrake line and yea alot of other not so pretty stuff happened, luckily he didnt crash
the amount of oil i used in the tranny was 3 quarts of 75w-90 royal purple
and 5 quarts in the motor, remember i changed the oil pan so my engine was completly dry, so if you do not change the oil pan then you may need less, but just use the dipstick to be certain
the stock radiator hoses from the RB hooked up to my radiator
the lower hoses fit with no problems and no cutting
the upper one had to be cut on boths sides but it fit PERFECT now
the heater hoses also needed to be cut, not really sure how much here since i cut it like 20 times to get it to fit and its still not quite right, but it works
my tachometer is off now, i got scared when i hit 8k rpm which was prolly around 6000-6500
Gary(syko) informed me to use the KA water temp sensor so my gauge would not be off and read lower/higher then possibly overheat, so dont forget to do that, its a 2 minutes swap over, simple enough
the intercooler i used was a squeeze, if i had gotten a 24x12x3 then it probably would not have fit without complete removal or major cutting of the support, i havnt tried it but my money is on that it wont work

thats all i can really think of now
i have some blowby videos on my friends camera i will upload as soon as i get them

I didn't attack you. I merely commented about your car. Don't post your vehicle on the internet if you can't handle comments. I'm not sure what you've heard about Zilvia, but we are indeed the best site out there. We have a large base of individuals with vast experience with the 240sx. We don't however have a large following for show cars. This does not mean I am asking you to leave, by any means. I'm simply stating, you need thicker skin to hang out in these parts.

Welcome to Zilvia.

this is a great site indeed, it is also a very cruel, and zilvian's a tough critics. we are just sharing our personal opinions on ur car. It is kindda away from what alot of the people here on Zilvia is trying to accomplish with their rides. if u read on it for a lil bit, u will find out for ur self. Mad probs anyway on ur hard labor that is being put into the car. no comment on my behalf. And also Edgerydr please try to keep ur personal information to a minimum ( hint) . C

to the original owner of the thread, ur swap is looking awesome, sorry to jack ur thread, but I think there is something that need to be cleared. C

henry, maybe sometime arrange a meet or something, I msg'd you about your old KA, I might neeed one, but i think its just an excuse to see your 240, I as well have a rb25 but im not far into it yet. I would like to see it and ask some questions if possable, I know some asian chick up in the heights area, so mabye ill go see her and then say Hi

Later-

Robby

sorry im selling the KA to my friend since he needed a new motor (bought one that was blown) again i'd rather go to a meet to show my car to you folks on the forums, sorry i dont like letting the world know where i live on top of that i am back in school mon-fri and i work fri-sun, i will be dead tired everyday
i know 240s owners are some of the nicest people in the world, but sorry to say im not gonna drive out to meet random people from the forums so they can see my car. it's kind of weird if you ask me, but it was a big gathering with a bunch of people, i would be more than happy to come out if i have the energy and time. a one on one thing isnt really going to happen.
i will still keep my word on helping people with problem during their swap IF they use the SYKO PERFORMANCE mounts. Gary and Dave have been so great to me, this is the only way i can think of repaying them i will try my best to make time for Syko customers. all others doing their swap i have AIM, free feel to IM me and ask questions, if you are nearby and i have time i might try and swing by, but again i will be less motivated to come by if you're far and did not use the syko mounts

Did you read this thread at all? I posted a link to the RB FAQ for gods sake... please feel free to use the search button. type in "RB swap" and i have a hard time beliving you will not find at least 30 threads on the subject. well i got the videos from my friend
they arnt as good as i thought they would be, but it give you guys an idea
i had a larger resonator put on so its not as loud as it was in the first video, yes im trying my best to attract less cops
forgive my power steering noises, i had a loose clamp so it was slightly low on fluids and made noises, also my cousin was not used to the clutch so it took him awhile to find the spot

I know what you mean about the gas issue though. My RB25 s13 sucks it down so fast I swear I can actually see the gas gauge move when I lay into the boost. If I stay out of the boost and pussy foot it around town and on the highway, it gets way better mileage than my old KA.

now i can only say ... ... HOLY SHIT MAN ! that's so sexy , i can't give up on hope already !

you did it in a very timely manner . you should really look into making a DVD that displays it . sure , it'd be a ghetto DVD cuz you'd have to burn copies ... but i'm sure after all the times you said "syko" in your thread they'd be more than happy to host the DVD and let you sell it out of their store . i know for a fact i'd buy it ... even if i never did the swap . i'd watch the complications of it ... and learn my car (Zenki) !!!

haha im glad im encouraging more people to do this swap
i truly believe this is just as simple at a SR swap, maybe a few things are a bit tricky but after doing this swap, its so basic (i didnt do the wiring tho)
yes i did the swap quite quickly considering i had basic tools
i would have to say i put a good 150hrs into the swap
if i had worked even more on it each day, i would have gotten it done in less than 2 weeks for sure, AND if i didnt have to work on weekends, even less time
i cant exactly make a dvd since i didnt video tape any of the actually swapping, best i can do is offer help and pictures to the RB community
when i start on my cousins swap in summer i will record what i can

i dunno what i can post, i didnt exactly strip down the harness and see how everything is wired up. all i did was give Gary and Dave (syko performance) the 2 engine harnesses and a few days later i got it back as one harness, then i plugged it in. thats pretty much all i did with the wires

01-11-2006, 05:18 PM
Food for thought... over the last couple of days, I pinned out every wire from the ECU connector and labeled every plug on the RB20DET (manual tranny). What I didn't realize was that you actually DO NOT need to extend the MAF and O2 sensor wires. I previously had always searched to find the right shielded wire and meticulously spliced the wires to gain the extra length that I thought was needed. When extending the wires, I carefully wrapped the shielding to reduce the EMI noise and degradation of signal, which is very time consuming. This last time I bit the bullet and separated all the wires. Guess what? If you separate the harness far enough back, you can actually “un-wind” enough wire to extend both the MAF and O2 sensor without butchering the wires! And, with the sensors connected, the ECU can actually be mounted in its stock location. I have previously done this for the SR but not for the RB.

You guys probably already knew this but I thought it might be worth repeating. So, if you have a plug and don’t know what it goes to, let me know – I have the info on paper but not yet electronically available to share. Thanks, Mike Browning, Sales Manager, www.hiprollc.com

well my car has been running fine, no major problems yet, just clutch pedal issues, the adjustments fixed that quickly. no overheating with my fan setup, except the weather has been quite cold lately. i got a larger resonator put on my catback and i also threw on a silencer onto the HKS i got. i could really care less about backpressure issues, but i have heard that the silencer does not effect hp numbers in anyway, not much at least. my car is sooo quiet now, cops dont even turn their heads. the engine is ALOT louder than the exhaust even on WOT. its nice i miss having a quiet car.
as for my gas mileage its not looking too good, first 2 tanks i got 17-18mpg
then again i've been giving people rides, so not exactly slow driving, also a majority of my driving is stop and go, not too much freeway driving.
i hope when i do some minor tune up, spark plug wires, syntheic oil, all that good stuff my mpg might go up

I thought I was just mistaking the radiator for the AC condensor in those first few pics, but you say your AC works and blows cold. That's pretty cool, considering that there's quite a few people on here who'd love to have an RB and rock A/C, despite the weight penalty. And since Syko Performance did your wiring and you say it more or less plugs right in, I think I know where I'll go when I get an RB swap in.

Hows' the handling compared to the KA?

kouki_s14
01-26-2006, 01:32 AM
i think you read wrong, my ac is NOT currently working.
yes syko performance did wire it for me to work, but i have yet to get freon lines customized and the system recharged. when i do get all that done it will blow very cold since i have 2 fans blowing directly on the ac condensor

the handling is fine, doesnt feel any different to me, but i have really yet push my car so i cant say for sure. i actually believe it will handle better since there more weight upfront and there was considerable understeer with the KA, but that could have been due to my tires or suspension. ill never really know now, but hell im happy with it

Hello sir,
First off congratulations on the swap. Second, the GTR calipers you have will clear the rims no problem. I have the same calipers with r32 gts-t rims = 240sx se rims (16x6.5, I am pretty sure they have the same offset). It clears, so go ahead and put those on. As for the rotors, they use a 296x32 or 30 mm rotor. I say resurface the ones you have or expect to pay 140 plus shipping EACH from courtesynissan. For ss lines, Kuah at SPLparts offers the cheapest conversion lines.

thanks for the nice comments.
i was thinking that it would fit, but i have wheels on order and should be in late march/early april. im in not real rush to put the brakes on, so i plan on waiting and doing it all at one time. i do want to resurface my rotors, but the slots might be a problem for some places. i just gotta look around. i will look into the SS lines thanks. also what pads are you using, i've read that the calipers use the same pads as the TT Z32, but it seems real odd to me that the rotors are bigger but the pads are the same size. seems like its just added weight if there isnt more pad to bite.

Hey Henry,
Yes they use the same pads. I swapped the pads off my old z32 calipers onto the r32 ones. You can see the comparison on zilvia "r32 caliper comparison." The difference is the calipers get pushed out further from the hub reducing brake fade. As for the rotors, some shops might have a problem, but like I mentioned before, the rotors are expensive.

haha i noticed this thread got real popular, i didnt think it would be so big. nice to know more people are going RB, but that makes my car less "rare" so to say, haha o well. its a great motor but in the back of my mind i still want to own a SR and KAT powered car, but i would never give up my RB for either one. i'd be more than happy to help out with the swap if your local of course. i am still incredibly greatful to Gary and Dave at syko performance for all their help. they are great guys but honestly i hope no one is offended if they cant come out to help every individual, they are very busy people and i am very lucky for all the help they gave me. im sure if they have the time they would do the same for all of your guys, i dont want Gary and Dave to feel obligated to go to everyones homes to help because of my thread. if they cant make it out i will try my best to help their customers so i can somewhat repay my debt to them.

Vids wont work for me...

Nvm works fine now....youve done what ive always wanted to do, drop an rb25 into an s14 kouki, with a nice exhaust, coilovers to eliminate wheel drop, and a completely stock front end. Congrats on the swap, looks sick as hell, i know what mounts im using if i ever do it.

haha brought the thread back from the dead
no problem man
anyone else who needs a clean front clip in SOCAL hit me up, sorry no shipping unless you arrange it
my uncles junkyard has quite a few RB and SR clips
whenever i got time i can take you guys to choose one out like i did with 95s14 and he seems to be real happy with it since he got a HKS GT2535 turbine with his clip
im not trying to sell clips here. my uncle never paid me, but he hooks me up with stuff so i dont complain. i make no money i just want to build the RB community so maybe more shops will stock RB parts and that way i can pick up stuff for cheaper. plus its to repay my uncle for the great deals he gives me
maybe sooner or later i will consider officially working for him since he has asked me to, but for now its just helping him and people on this forum out

do you have any real indepth version of this or maybe even more pics, It would be awesome. I have been saving a rb clip here my zenki fourteen Lately people have been pushing me to put it in my S30, Z, but i dont think i will have as much fun with it as apposed to the S14 chassis.

Just to clarify, not all RB20 pans are rear sump. They came both ways...depends on what chassis the engine was used in.
