yes. i am an idiot. i changed my oil earlier today & didnt have a funnel so i poured it direct. being the moron that i am, i spilled some towards the exhaust manifold/header region. after driving a while i had opened up my hood to show a friend something, when i saw smoke coming out of the engine. i naturally flipped out cuz i thought i blew my head or something, but then remembered that i spilled some oil. so anyways, is this going to be a big deal? a buddy of mine told me that it shouldnt be a problem as long as i take it easy driving until the oil burns up since im more prone to overheat with the oil there now. i was thinking about giving my engine a wash though. would this be a smart idea? someone give me some feedback. i need some 240 advice. i dont trust my friends cuz they all drive civics

Don't worry about it. I always spill oil from the oil filter. It smokes a bit or alot, then it stops. I do try to mop up some of it though. Spraying the engine down is going to cause more potential problems than it will help fix, if you are not carefull.
Just be glad you didn't blow a radiator hose and burn off coolant
But you should be just fine.

nothing to worry about, it'll just burn away.

btw, the 240's engine oil dump in place should be pretty easy to dump oil in w/o a funnel, you might of hold the oil bucket wrong...

here's a quick lesson, this is what i do, and i never spell w/o a funnel.

do not dump oil w/ the oil container like this
         ///////|
        /        |
lid ==////////|

dump the oil like this

lid  ==\\\\\\\\|
           \       |
             \\\\\|

just fyi, maybe you did it right, and just have to take it slow...

yea i get ya. i only spilled a little to start with but then i got the rest of it in without a problem. just a quick update, the engine is smoking less today, but still smokes a little, and i can smell it from inside the car. again, is this normal? you dont think i burnt something in my engine, do you? about how long until the smoking stops for you guys? let me know, thanks!

I've started putting newspaper right under the filter when I take it out. Last time I changed oil I put my hand in a plastic bag, had news paper underneeth the filer, pulled the filter out and spilled oil all over the news paper just like was supposed to happen. I then removed the news paper, not realizeing just how much oil I had spilled on it (it was in a big puddle on the news paper) and I spilled oil all over the battery an myself...LOL

Oh, and back to the topic a funnel is only about $0.50
Also, oil doesn't burn away fast so you may see it smoke for a while...although it should heat up and run off whatever it is on.

Edit: BTW, there are things you can use instead of a funnel if you've drained your oil already and realize you don't have one.
A paper cup(cut a hole in the bottom), a toilet tissue roll (paper towel is better), or anything else you can come up with...

iirc, burning oil can ruin your cat with time.... it's not gonna happen right away, but if you keep on constantly doing it, some day you might fail emissions.... anyone who can correct me?

For 2 bucks I got this thing from kragen that screws onto the oil container, and you then insert it into the hole in the valve cover, and then you twist it to open it. Very easy and clean. Only problem is that it only fits on quarts not gallons, and when I cahnge the oil in my dads F-250(the sucker takes 4 gallons!! I spill alittle. As long as you do it slow, you shouldn't spill too much or any at all.
