View Full Version : Relocating CD player to glovebox!!

I'm going to relocate my CD player to my glovebox in my 89 240. I need to use that center area for gauges. I figure the glovebox will be great.. I can lock it too, and prying eyes won't see it.

Anyways, I need some ideas. How to mount this CD player in the glovebox is the biggest problem I can think of. I can extend stereo wires without problems.. it's just mounting the CD player.

So far, I'm thinking of taking my glovebox out and making some measurements. I have a dremel (of course, everyone should have one) and I'm thinking of using some thick plastic to make a din for it.

I want it to look nice when a girl is riding with me and I ask her to change my CD. =p

make your own brackets and screw it into the glovebox. if not that you can zip tie it down? lol

I'm trying not to use any zipties on my car period. Leave that to the european guys, lol.

no visible screws either. It's gotta be good! I'm using DEFI gauges for the 2.6 and I do NOT want them mounted on the pillar.

double sided mounting tape. no screws, no visible tape, no brackets, no zipties

yeah...the tape would melt...i say use some sort of braket and bolt it to the top of the box. OR...dont have one at all!

That would suck to change cd's

I hardly ever change CD's. And when I do, it's usually when my car is warming up. I'm not worried about that. More worried about volume control. I'll have to learn to adjust it from farther away..

Well... I'm going to visit home depot tomorrow and get some stuff. I'll post some pictures when I'm done. Meanwhile if you guys have any other ideas be sure to post em. Thanks.

You could buy a nice Player with a remote. That would solve your volume issue. Get a 12x12 sheet of ABS plastic that you can put around your player, that will look nice.

if you got a player with a face off- you can just run some extended wires to the IR port and not have to open the glovebox to turn up/down the vol (whatever other feats the remote has).
Also, if you listen to a lot of music - MP3 Cd players are the best - no worry about switching between different CDs

Any decent stereo shop will sell a universal DIN holder (plastic box with a full housing), designed for use on boats, RVs, etc. Trim it down and mount it in the glovebox, then slide the radio.

WELL guys, operation was completed. Total time: 3 hours.

I purchased some plastic from the depot today, a diamond dremel cutter, some plastic bonding adhesive and some other misc crap.

I ended up not using any of it. lol.

With the magic of a razorblade I cut out a square in the back portion of the glovebox for the rear of the CD player. Mounted the left side of the CD player to the left side of the glove box with two screws. The right side of the CD player was secured using a modified piece of metal that originally held the CD player in the stock location.

The major portion of work was modifying the frame that supports the glovebox. When I opened attempted to close the glovebox after I mounted the CD player, the rear of the CD player would hit the frame. So I had to cut out a section of the frame.

There was no wire extending. My stock wires reached the back of the CD player easily and I ziptied them out of the way as not contact the back of the CD player upon closing the glove box.

Everything feels odd now. Looking down and not seeing a CD player in the same place.. just a big gaping hole that needs some attention.

I'll post pics soon, maybe some of you other people would like to do this. It's pretty friggin easy. :rawk:

Good job. :) I would suggest putting a fiberglass enclosure around it to make it look nice and clean. Maybe carbon fiber? So it could look like it was meant to go there.

Cool!

To those wanting to do their own fiberglassing here are a couple forums to check out. There are lots of nice project pics, both of these sites will really motivate you to get your ass down to walmart for fleece, resin, chopmat and cloth!

If you dont like driving w/ the glove compartment open, you can get IR repeaters for the remote.
Ive seen them used a lot for home theaters for sending signals through cabinet doors to components.
They have a lot of this stuff here:
