i pulled my distributor out and now my motor (redtop) isnt correctly timed anymore.....it will start if i hold the key , but it has knock and there is a tick in the head...is this bc of it not firing bc of the bad timing??? what is the timing on a redtop?? any special things i should know before setting it?

First of all, if it's an SR motor, it doesn't have a distributor. You do have a Cam Angle Sensor though.
Second of all, why are you working on your car without an FSM? DL the FSM from this site (for the S14 with SR20DET) and just follow the part where they tell you how to time the car.
If that's too much of a PITA for you, then go to Phase2's site and they have just the page with the instructions on how to time the SR somewhere.

I suggest you stop touching your car immediately and call someone who knows what they're doing before you blow it up.
