View Full Version : Hillclimb S13 update

Some updates.

I finished the chromoly motor mounts and installed a spare block and head in the bay. I am almost finished the exhaust manifold for a twin scroll td05hra mhi turbo. The tubing is 321 065wall and should be fine for mild to moderate antilag (for 2-3 minute runs) The manifold is 2 piece with the second half slipping on and providing enough for heat expansion. The turbo/motor/transmission are all solid mounts. The bracing in the front end is no where near completion and I am waiting on some .5 inch tubing to finish up and mount a bumper.

The compressor-->intercooler pipe will be less than 1 foot and the post IC pipe will be less than 2 feet. Sunny throttle bodies are mounted and the plenum is almost complete. Intercooler mounting will be next, then coolant lines to the rear and radiator mounting.

so the motor mounts are super solid, and the turbo is also bracketed?

the motormounts are 049 wall, heattreated 4130 as well as the front brace. The turbo is mounted to the chassis as to eliminate any weight strain on my fragile manifold. Any vibration will be absorbed by the slip connection (which I will do over break when no customers are around :) ).

wow, awsome fabrication man! i have never seen ITB + turbo setup. i have a question for you, and it's only becuase i have never seen this before, how are you getting the boosted intake into the ITBs? i assume its going to be all custom piping, but i cant really picture it in my head. anyway, it looks like a beast and i cant wait to see it done so i can stare at the engine bay and figure it out myself if you dont end up answering this.

thanks, and again, it looks absolutly amazing! good job!

To answer for the original poster...like the GTi-R, there is a plenum that bolts ONTO the plate behind the 4 individual TBs...so there is one inlet, and standard intercooler piping.

Only real difference is that instead of one TB at the front of the plenum, you have 4 inside the plenum.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
I'm not using the GTiR plenum. From the throttle bodies out it is all new. The GTiR doesn't have velocity stacks. I will finish it tonight and post some photos.

It won't look like that. the 4 ITBs merge into a large 'plenum'.. like this guy WILL have.. and it'll look basically like an aftermarket intake manifold.

the cage is 1.625" 083 wall chromoly and the rest is 058 wall 1.00" chromoly. The suspension will be made of 058 wall 1.00 as well (with stock subframes for now)

I finished the exhaust manifold and am waiting to mount the intercooler before I finish the intake plenum. The exhaust manifold will have to be redone at some point as I don't anticipate 321 lasting that long being blasted by ALS. I'll have to save up for inconel or 347.

Damn, I love the fabrication. Do you flow-bench test your stuff? or are you not really concerned with that?
With the exhaust mani, you ran 4-2-1?

good stuff..

11-25-2005, 09:55 PM

Not quite, it's a twin scroll turbo. The inlet to the turbine is divided.

driftstyre
11-25-2005, 10:07 PM
4-->2 as equal as I could get them. I tried to measure the runners as well as possible to keep them equal but by no means is anything flow tested (or tested in anyway for that matter). Hopefully it will be in the spring sometime :) I'm curious as to what a long runner turbo SR will sound like. Probably raspy.

why the twin-scroll, though?
and how will you go about the anti-lag system?

i'm curious

driftstyre
11-28-2005, 11:14 AM
I am just going with a turbo that happens to be twin scroll. The td05hra is designed specifically for antilag. The next cheapest ALS turbo is a T35 Garrett w/ maram 247 shaft/wheel. New they run close to 4000. After that is the TR30R at close to 10K a piece. The HRA is 900 new and readily available. It happened to be twin scroll so I designed the manifold accordingly. With ALS I should have a 2-7000 rpm usable powerband. Autronic or Gems will be used with a mil spec harness. I'd like to use AEM because I love it and we use it on our other hillclimb SR but I'm not sure about the ALS capability.

meatish
11-28-2005, 02:07 PM
I have a question: What is your budget for this car? How much are you planning on using it?
If you are willing to run anti-lag on a $900 turbo then you have my respect, but I cringe at the cost of replacing it after a few thousand miles.
As for the runners, looks nice! Also, is that the intercooler you will be using when you race?

chibo
11-28-2005, 02:21 PM
Wow, this is definitely something to watch as it progresses.
*stabs F5 waiting for new pictures* :)

driftstyre
11-28-2005, 02:30 PM
I'm not worried about 1000 miles on the turbo as I will probably put less than 200 miles a year on the car. The turbo I am using is designed for 500+ miles of very aggressive antilag. It will be fine.

There is no budget. I am poor though and have been buying parts for it for about 3 years. Total with ECU it will cost me under 10K. There is over $15,000 of labor though.

Is that the Yacco sponsored 206WRC in your sig.?

I had an s13 thottle pedal sitting around and somehow it disappeared. I just need to stop by a junk yard in this 20 degree weather and grab one.

I will be using a semi-built SR with stock rods/crank, ARP rod bolts, head studs, mahle pistons, not sure on cams but most likely 256/264. 1.2-1.8 bar of boost will be used on 109 unleaded.

is it me or is that a longacre quick release?

driftstyre
01-07-2006, 10:31 PM
Thanks for the kind words guys. I'm happy to keep updates coming. I haven't given in to the credit card yet so bear with me. When its motor time I might have to.

The 3/4 rod end on the steering column is very common in many types of motorsports, mainly circle track. This particular rod end is oversized for a 3/4" steering shaft (the ones pictured are from Flaming River). The quick release is from Smiley's Racing, a really cool circle track shop. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand NASCAR but the technology in pro level circle track racing is cost effective and proven. I only wish I had a ford 9" rear end so I could pick one of 300 ring and pinion ratios for $300. Are there any ring and pinion combos that are interchangable with S13 diffs?

infinitexsound
01-07-2006, 10:38 PM
if u can find it, try nismo... but most nissan cars run r200 diffs... so parts are pretty much interchangeable....... same thing with the datsun 510 and subaru's both run r160 diffs..

Ever make another set of those badass rlca's? Or could you tell where to get the balljoint thing that will be used.

Johny5
01-07-2006, 11:50 PM
driftstyre, the jdm 180sx's came with a 4.36 r&p (only the ones equipped with ca18det's) and supposedly the extera was equipped with a 4.63 as it uses an r200 differential as well. if you don't want to go through that hastle nismo offers their r&p setups through courtesy nissan at the "glamerous" price of $500ish. good luck!
