i don't suggest spray can paint... you should definatly get some proffesional single stage. lasts forever.

Only reason I say it is cuz, i went black on mine and after almost 2 yrs of pulling engine in and out of the bay, it looks like crap cuz of all the scratches on it.

^^^ yes
iirc i was talking to someone online who said to keep the factory engine bay paint, because cheapo paint will end up looking like shit after a little while. compared to the factory paint, rattle can will get scratched up *really* easily.

I rattlecanned Lisa's engine bay black.
It scratched all the time, so every now and then, I'd scuff the paint up, cover what didn't need paint on it, and spray it over a bit. No biggie.

rustoleum flat black. and yes, it does scratch relatively easy but its still pretty tough. here's a recent pic and you can see its not too bad (aside from still being dirty and dusty from paint)

Grrr.. i been thinking of paint mine soon
I have buddy who took auto body back in high school, and has some equipment laying around so, i might prep my bay soon, fill up a couple holes, and give her a spray..
But I am still not 100% sure what the color of my car will be when paint it
So.. We will just have to see

This was done with actual autobody paint not rattle can stuff.
I primed the engine bay, them painted it black, then did the green ice pearl. The flakes look big because of the shitty light and a bad camera. They are actually very small specs and look beautiful.

yes. engine swaps on the street suck. condos getting mad at you for leaving an old motor and tranny in your assigned parking spot also suck.

I redid my old car with spray cans, since there was virtually nothing under thos hood it was pretty easy, but I say if you plan to do it then take the time to pull everything and do it clean. Nothing worse than seeing a line behind the brake booster or the wiring harnesses.

A tip for all that want to do this, pull everything! its soooo much easier. Also Aluminum Foil will save you a ton of time in masking off and its nice since it molds to whatever you want!

i just used regular spray paint, splurged for the $3 a can stuff cause its all i could get in baby blue, i removed everything from the engine bay and cleaned as best as I could, (with degreaser and a a bit of windex/brak parts cleaner) and just went to town, no primer, or other prep, un sure how long it will last, but it looks good so far, and I can always do touch ups...

hey luckyrb, is that a custom roll cage or did you buy it somewhere?......and how long did it take you or someone else to strip the car down to that??.................just wondering, I have a 91 hatch with a RB25DET and it's going to the body shop in Jan. and I want to strip it down to save on cost.
luckyrb13
11-08-2005, 12:32 AM
The cage is from chassis enginerring its a ten point. The door bars are custom. To strip it down took me and two other guys one night maybe 5 to 7 hours. If your going to put a cage in the car and want a to do it right my opinion is that you have a cage builder do it or buy a nice bolt in one like auto power. Iam not that happy with the outcome of my cage and it was still kinda pricey, but i guess we live and learn. oh and its really not that strip down of the car its puting it back together thats a pain in the rear.

depends on what you're using it for, cusco cages aren't approved for many types of racing, and from what i've been hearing, won't hold up real good if you flip.
it's blang blang tho! :rawk:

I had a cusco cage fit and finish was probably an 9 out of 10. Probably better to go with auto power cage especially if you intend to track the car. I would say 600 is a good price. thats what i paid like two years ago. Better yet auto power cage is cheaper to boot. AUTOPOWER CAGE (http://www.autopowerindustries.com/Roll_Cages.htm)
