the job I took up here is great, but my predecessor was also the IT guy, who's role I've now absorbed. Now I have general computer knowledge (networking, computer maintenance, hardware, etc.) and an idea on how things work, but they want me to become the expert at some things like Microsoft Exchange Server, etc.

So I guess my questions are: Is there a lot involved with managing a small network (about 20 work stations total)? Is MS Exchange difficult to manipulate/navigate/understand? Can I just take a class or course on it an learn the basics?

BUY BOOKS, buy book buy books buy BOOKS

Exchange isn't TOO hard, and you can set up a little 4 or 5 person setup on an extra machine.

what are you guys using for authentication? AD? Netware? (i guess its zenworks now, i dunno, i hate networking)

To him you listen! Like Yoda I speak! :p

Why do you need an exchange server for such a small network?
Hope you're running AD :)

Exchange, bah.... just start passing out gmail invites, Then ask for a raise since your saving money for licensing and hardware.

+1 on the books, or just a class at community college will get you far enough to build and admin an exchange server as long as you have basic networking knowledge.

Well, everything is set up already, but I'm going to have to fix stuff if something goes wrong, etc. Sigh, I'm glad they're paying for the classes.

no, I'm a project manager for a Land Surveying company. The IT stuff just fell in my lap because no one else can do it and I'm the only one that has the most experience in something close to it.
