does it come out w/ out having to take out the retainer around it? or the oil pan? i tried taking it out, but it's really stuck on there and i don't wanna damage anything.

Since you're replacing it, poke a small hole in it then hook it with a screwdriver and pry out.

Nope you don't need to take out the plate. Just break the seal with a screw driver and hammer, and then pull it out with plyers. Just becareful, do not scrape or gouge the metal ring around it that is all...

replacing the rear main seal involves taking off the transmission and the flywheel correct? And the seal is located by the crankshaft? Just need some clarification because mine is leaking also. Thanks.

Yes, its the seal that is on the back of the block. Underneath the flywheel/flexplate.
