View Full Version : Detent in driveshaft normal?

I took off my auto driveshaft for the manual swap and the back (longer peice) of the driveshaft has some detent in it. Is that normal for it to detent like that? Btw, I'm talking about where the driveshaft mounts to the diff. at the joint. I have a s13 too just to let you know.

If you dont know, the piece circled is made to move (duh). But my question is should there be detent in it?

The meaning of detent is "A mechanism that temporarily keeps one part in a certain position relative to another, and can be released by applying force to one of the parts."

Or "A catch or lever that locks the movement of one part of a mechanism."

So in other words whats happening is the piece that is circled (where you see the two hole...that piece) move put when you move it like its made to do there is a mechanism that sorta locks it. But if you keep on applying just a little force it moves? Does this make sence? Is that detent normally there?

I've posted this on 3 different 240 forums and no awnser yet. Can anyone here help?

Dang, what all do I have to do to fix it? Is it easest to just buy a driveshaft. I'm already getting a front manual one. But I dont really want to have to pay the bucks for the rear too. I'm sort on money as it is. Could a drivershaft shop fix it? If so anyone know how much?

I've been told before that the U-joints are replaceable becuase they're pressed in and you cant get another one back in becuase of the way the factory made them. True?

They are replaceable, GM has those goo filled ones (nylon) I beleive, but they are still replaceable, how are you doing a 5spd swap yourself when you don't understand what a Universal-Joint is?

Nissan used non replaceable u joints. once they are dust you have to get another driveshaft. If your going the route of U joints do yourself a favor and get a one piece driveshaft. They are lighter and you lose less torque by eliminating your center support bushing.

I know what a universal-joint is. What I wanted to make sure of is if their replaceable or not. I was almost 100% sure that they where unreplaceable and drift freaq backed me up. But, that really wasn't my question was of this thread. Then question was the detent in the u-joint.

My next question is, I really want to get a one piece driveshaft but with the money I have right now doesn't think so. Could I use the front and back driveshaft I have now for a month til I get more money or is it back enough that I should replace it with a one piece right away?

you could probably get away with using it for a month. If the u joint really starts acting up you will feel it. Cause it will cause a binding or rotational vibration and possibly noise.

What about lubing it with some penetrating oil? Would that help some?

you can have a new spicer end welded on by a driveshaft shop for cheap.
