my steering wheel shakes quite badly when i brake at high speeds (70-80mph). i got my tension arm and wishbone bushes done today. this has helped the shaking a little but its still quite bad.

any suggestions welcome

cheers!!

Warped rotors. Have them resurfaced, or replaced.

tires might to be balanced

If you can, i'd suggest getting new rotors as opposed to resurfacing them. Its kind of obvious, but i thought i'd add it anyways. I mean, it all depends on how long you can wait (i.e., for getting the rotors if u buy 'em online somewhere), and if you have adequate funds to buy new ones.

I'm about 99% certain its the rotors, but as one of the above posters said, you should also check your wheel balancing if you get a chance. If one of the little balancer tabs flew off your wheel, you should be able to see where it was (there should be one little spot on your wheel thats cleaner than the rest).

tires might need to be balanced

Replace your fucking rotors. It is thickness variation technically, not warped because a sliding caliper design will cancel out warped rotors to point.

If the wheels were out of balance the vibration would be there whether you are braking or just cruising. Check to see if your tires are cupping...

spookykid is right replace rather than resurface, resurfacing is taking that import mass of metal away that needs to disipate the heat...

i have this same problem kind of. my tie rod bushing were completely shot so i bought new tein tie rods and tie rod ends. i road force balanced my wheels at work, and from about 60-75 or so i have a steering wheel vibration. not when im braking. when im accelerating, or coasting its there. in any gear. any ideas? im kind thinking driveshaft is bent or out of balance.

well I have the similar problem but only from 40-50... i think (speedo doesn't work). My guess for me is my driveshaft, but your situation seems to be in the wheels, maybe wheel bearings? If it continues at a higher speed, I would guess the bearings.

Why don't you jack the back end of the car up and let it idle in gear see if there is a vibration still, accelerate and see if it shows up.

I'd agree with the others almost definately the rotors

Yep brake on car shakes, turn or replace rotors, prolly replace

What that have to do with braking and steering wheel vibration.

Yeah i have a probelm around 70-80 and up i get a shake in my wheel. I have no i dea what it could be though tires are balanced.I have hemi tension rods and new tein outter tie rods, and a new steering rack and i cant get rid of the freaking shake. I have aftermarket wheel but have hubcentric rings for them so im outta ideas.

my brother's 240 has just the opposite problem as your guys'. at 70ish mph his car and steering wheel smooth out and are in some what of a sweet spot. however, when he is cruising slower and brakes, his steering shakes something fierce. in agreement with most of the other posts, its a warped rotor/s. i would recommend new rotors or resurfacing yours. while you are taking it all apart (if you do your own work) look at your caliper/s and make sure it is releasing properly becuase sometimes they do not engage or disengage like they are supposed to which will cause unwanted friction and result in warping your new rotors.

for bryants95240sx, after you do the tie rods it is important that you get your car aligned. this i am sure you are aware but you did not mention it.

yeah i did have it aligned b/c i had got new tires, new tie rods, and a new steering rack at the same time.

My brother 93' civic hatch has this problem also. It could possibly be a bad wheel bearing (if thats what they call it.)

i have this exact same problem. my steering wheel vibrates from 40-50mph, and only from 40-50mph, the rest of the time is fine. ive had my tires balanced TWICE already.

He was talking about driveshaft at the time, if people would read the problem was pretty much fixed next to the point of are the tires cupped and maybe a front end inspection if it is still there...
