View Full Version : Looking for a new car...

My girlfriend-like person just bought herself a '95 Prizm recently. She was sold on the fact that's just a Corolla in Geo badging anyway, and my mechanic gave the car the "thumbs up" upon reviewing it for her.

But, before she bought it, I also showed her some pictures of a '93 Celica, and she really dug it. It was completely outside the genre she was looking in (a practical, comfy 4-5 seater), but she had to admit it looked damn nice. She said the same thing about an S13 she managed to find on her own, actually.

However, even though she was willing to consider getting a more fun car, her practical side still pulled through, and the Prizm is what she wound up with. But, her "dating Jeff" side is making a come back from behind, and about to surpass her practical side. She considers her car boring, and has pretty much convinced her roommate to buy it from her.

So, now the hunt is on again for a fun car! =) I thought I would ask for some thoughts and suggestions.

First off, she's used to driving sedans, so the switch to a smaller car can't be too drastic. She thought the 240 looked great (and she knows how much I love it), but she was quite turned off at how small the back "seats" are. The Celica appeared to actually offer seating for four. Personally, I'm leaning heavily towards the Celica, but since she has asked for my advice, I also suggested a '92+ Prelude or Integra, but I think those might just barely tip the budget. We're looking at a $5,000 spending cap.

That all said, any ideas for a car that costs around $5k, is reliable, fun to drive, and not TOO-too small?

ps: A 240sx is never entirely out of the question though. With the cars on that list, look at the progress I've made already converting her to a car chick. Who knows what's possible? Teaching her manual, perhaps? Hmmm, one step a time. Maybe I'll save that for her NEXT next car. =)

How about an SE-R? they are definately a good fun platform.. Little boxy though. They are fun to drive around corners.

240's have back seats? Oh yeah! LOL.

I think that the Celica would be a good car. Or the 240. Hmmm, just have her test drive both of them, and see which one she likes. Dodge stealth? Ford Probe? Thats all I can think of.

I would take preludes off the list, the back seat space is tiny. Integras are an okay choice, have her test drive it and see how she likes it. I have a '99 integra and it's cramped for 4 people but maybe a 4dr GSR would suit her better? plus you'd have stick. S13 or Celica are good choices too.. But it all depends on her preference and availability of the car.

my g/f is currently looking (sorta) as well, i suggested an older (last body-style) impreza
living in the North East, the AWD will be good for winter
relatively ok on gas
kinda sporty
2.5RS and rally sport odels are actualy decently quick

they also have better back seats than the 240

Ba-ha-hahahahahahaha!!! =)

As for the other posts, yeah, she'd test drive all of 'em - I'm mostly looking for opinions about cars I may have missed, like the Probe for example, 'cuz I havn't heard good things about the Stealth's reliability. Both of us are sorta fans of japanese cars, though.

But, back to the post I'm quoting, I was able to find her a rear spoiler and CAI on eBay. She wasn't too interested.
