View Full Version : Theft rates for the 240sx

Hey guys, Im new to the scene and am already concerned about theft. Im paranoid by nature anyway, and with seeing so many fellow club members STI's getting stolen this year its only natural.

Seeing as how the 240sx is so popular now, are these experiencing a high theft rate? Im not too sure here in NYC, but I sure as hell know that STI's are being stolen left and rite, more so possibly than EVO's.

I have the ability to pull off a few good mods and chill the rest of the time, but surely dont want to do anything that will call attention if theyre on high on teh stolen list until I move west next spring.

Yes, Im known to spend upwards of $600 on teh security measures, and while I know that they can take it if they truely want it, the whole point is to make them fight for it or become discouraged.

Anyone care to chime in?

Alarm with ignition shut off, removable steering wheel, shave your handles and locks (replaced with poppers). If you're really conscious unplug your battery every time you park.

Ugly paint has also been known as a theft deterrant.

But, the ultimate theft prevention is to keep your project at home and drive a beater. Plain and simple...

240's are very easy to get into... I have locked my self out several times and it takes maybe 10seconds with a clothshanger.

Your best bet is a good Security system, and have a few secret weapons like a hidden battery kill switch. A locking Battery Box for the Trunk helps also. Removable Steering Wheel is great, but dont ever leave it in the car or trunk.

If you have an SR and you dont want it to be known... put a Recirc on your BOV. Your Exhaust tone my give it away so runnning a Mild Exhaust will help.

Protect your rims by using more than one type of wheel locks.

Its simple to protect your car...

If you use an aftermarket door actuator (if you dont have power options S13) put it right beside the lock mechanism inside the door, and then disconnect and remove all the other bars used to unlock the door, then coathangers will no longer work to unlock it. Worst case is your batter dies, you door actuators wont work, and you have to use your key and go in through the hatch.

And expensive alarms, and I second the removable wheel and hidden ignition cut switch. Oh, and buy a garage to park in.

Use this link to search for theft rate, (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/theft/theft.cfm) and its true that 240s are very easy to break into.

On s13s (i dont know about coupes) all a person has to do is peel back the window, reach in and unlock the door. But I know in the seattle area that they aren't a common stolen car at all just because there are so little of them. I've got a few friends that jack cars on a regular basis and they are always just going after hondas unless there is something else that is worth the extra effort to get into.

i honestly think thieves should all die a slow painful death.

there's nothing worse than taking someone's hard earned money and effort just cause you can't do it the right way and earn it for yourself.

park in a garage and live in a nice neighborhood.

that and don't post stuff about your car, like spec sheets, its pretty much a grocery list for a thief.

So let me get this straight.... since evos and stis are stolen , you think that your 240sx will get stolen just as frequently?

1. not a lot of people know about 240sx's compared to the number of people who know about stis and evos

unless your car is hot shit like bobbyboy's s13.5 then i dont think you should be spending $600+ on security. Just get an autoloc for $40.

I recently had to deal with an ignition system problem with my S13 and learned how to hot-wire my own car and it's INCREDIBLY EASY! If I were to set out to steal a 240 I could build a switch to plug into the ignition harness under the dash that would let me drive away as quickly as having the key. Even without that, I could get away with a screwdriver in a minute or two depending on if I wanted to rip apart the steering column or not.

I think installing a switch tied into the ignition system or fuel pump is a really good and CHEAP way to protect your car from disappearing. Tap into the clutch pedal switch and run wires to wherever and conceal a simple on/off switch from radioshack. Flip the switch when you park in a shady location.

This seems to be a recent trend but don't move to San Diego...haha! I'm lucky to have a garage where I live. Also get a battery cut off knob that you just unscrew which cuts the current and throw it in your pocket $10.00 at any auto parts store.

make your own switch that uses a different type of plug and move it somewhere else on the car.

where abouts in NYC do you live?
I think it really entirely depends upon location and where you park.
I've had my old 240 stolen once and broken into thrice when I lived in San Francisco. I'd suggest parking in nice area plus throw on all thouse security features the past couple posters have been talking about.

When I go out say clubbing or something, I usually kinda park far away, near nice cars, pull my CAS wire, pull my ignitor wire and hid it, pretty hard to see the igniter wire at night.... Other than that, if they know where everything is and plus both those things in, they know what they are doing and probably can steal your car no matter what...

WTF are you talking about? It's not like you're giving people your address. You can go to meets to meet people. Not give out personal address. If you're that scared for your car, stay home. People at meets are usually very friendly and overall more interested in meeting new friends. (or at least that's what I would hope.)

Yep, I've had countless cars stolen at car meets. You should just stay home and make friends over the interweb, but dont ever hang out with them... they'll steal your car. :keke:

yet you are still friends with them?

that's shady.

call the cops on their asses... or murder them, but that would involve some effort :duh:

Around here they do. It might be possible that 240sx's are stolen here just as frequently, but have no idea personally. Its the new "in" car and usually get noticed more than others.

This year alone I know of 6 club members, 5 of which are subaru (sqc) and one of the Evo-NY guys that have had their cars stolen. All of the subaru were STI. I had a 02 wrx up until now, and no one wants them as much

All I can do is all the measures reccomended above, and maybe lay off the exterior mods for a while unless I start sleeping at my front door.

yeah and if you got that..then you can wire a fuse to your starter (but remember to hide the fuse). So if someone say the burglar tries to start your car the fuse will blow.
The thief will then see your engine has one of those screw security things...they'll try to use another screw to complete the connection (or if they have one of their own-they'll use that)

But they'll never know you wired a fuse to blow..
& if for some reason you didn't hide the fuse... how many thiefs carry specific fuses?
The theif will spend so much time trying to troubleshoot & will prolly get caught up with a swift beat down.

and if your too small to administer a beat down..you got all the time in the world to call the ones who should be doing their jobs, the pigs.

Lol...its very important you never start your car without the screw in..
unless you like blowing fuses..

the theift rate use to be better, but more theives are starting to understand the valuve of the parts on our 240sx. Blame the media of drifting. Too bad most theives don't know what they're doing, because they're so used to stealing hondas hah.

protect your car with LAYERS of secutiry. Alarm, autolock, club, guns, dogs in cars, garage, etc.
don't take car to malls, park at school where people can always see your car, and buy a gun.

Plus the market for buying stolen parts from nissan car isn't as large as -lets say honda. Because if someone would to sell a stolen part, someone on this forum has to know. Most of our aftermarket parts has to be from Japan and not easy to get ahold of. well unless you're from so cal hah.

example, a set of stolen uras wheels.

the rates will go up for sure but for now, it really isn't bad at all i dont think. I personally only know one person in my area that had his 240sx stolen, stripped and left somewhere to die, where as i know atleast 5-10 ppl that had their Honda's stolen, stripped and left somewhere. But of course i am in the Washington DC area... we're natroius for having our Inetgra Type Rs missing. My friend just had his boosted Civic EG hatch stolen at school. It was found 2 days later in Prince Geroges County (where it ususally ends up) stripped.

not true, 240sx's in seattle are always getting jacked. Theres at least 1 car jacked a week in the seattle area. From one of the local boards. And what do you mean there is no 240's in seattle? lol i not gonna even go into that.

Well, Ive even went as far as buying a boot for my wheel about 5 years ago and still have it to this day. Great actually, one day I forgot I had it on and tried to roll out when the front side of my car climed about 3' LOLZ so I know it works among other things.

I agree with what someone else said above, layers of security is the key. And trying to park in a place/manner that would make towing hard enough for anyone to hear or notice the commotion soon enough to whip ass.

Only once did one of my cars almost get stolen, but I luckily I left my dutchmaster in the car and went back for it right on time to catch 2 5' tall mexicans trying to get into my lowrider cutlass. Since Im 6'1 250lbs it was pretty easy to handle them

Some great ideas posted here, I may have to try a couple, thanks guys.

thats funny about the repo man stuff...cuz up in hollywood theres a bit of russian mobs that own tow companies and just tow/steal ur car in broad daylight ks. i actually met a guy whos cousin used to be with the russian mob up there. till he got blown away by sum armenians. @[email protected]

im suprised, nobody has mentioned the GPS option. i guess its similar to low jack but it can send signals of when ur alarm is going off and what not to ur cellphone. much like a stronger 2-way pager. also it can track where the car is, mph, from ur phone much like a normal GPS unit.

I don't know about you guys but I have invested a pretty penny in my car (I use the term invested loosely) and I plan on getting it all back if its stolen. I will be taking out a custom car policy out on my car to cover every part thats in it. I got quoted $800 every six months on a $32k STi so I am guessing it can't be much more than that.
