Choosing a lubricant?

What brand oil do you use? Why?
What brand oil do you avoid? Why?
What wieght oil do you use, and in which region of the country do you live?  Does this affect your choice?

As far as I know, Mobil 1 is the best engine oil and Redline is the best gear oil, but I may be wrong about that.

Redline also makes an engine oil. Don't know how good it is but from what I have heard it is better then Moble1.

I'm pretty sure redline engine oil is better than moble1 but who can affort $26 for oil every 6-8 weeks plus $5 filter? Not me. I will stick with my mobile 1 synthetic 10w30, 5w-30 for winter...dono how much it matters here in Va though. As for why, because I hear its the best <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
So my vote for mobile 1 synthetic 10w30 with purelator (sp?) filter.

the thing to remember is this . If you are a oil change junkie that changes your oil every 1000-1500 miles than you might as well stay with a good petroluem based oil. Reason for this is oil viscosity starts to break down around 3500 miles . Of course heat will break viscosity down too.
On Synthetics the properties of the oil are completely different and the is little or no viscosity break down be it heat or otherwise . Which means if you could keep the synthetic oil clean you would not have to change it at all. alas this is where the necssesity of oil changes does come into play. the dirtier your oil gets the worse off the lubrication properties get. Of course with synthetic even when its dirty it tends to hold viscosity longer than conventional oil.
what does this all mean?? It means if you are a lazy ass you can put synthetic in your engine with a 1-5 micron filter and not change your oil for up to 25k Yes 25K . I ran Amsoil in my 90 hardbody truck for 7 years and all I did was change out the amsoil filters(1 micron filters) every 7,500 to 10K and top off. At 25K intervals I would change the oil and the filter. Engine ran great and had incredible life and power(135K) when I sold it to the current owner . It probably has over 200K on it by now.
I am using mobil 1 in my 91 and I plan on changing the oil out around every 15K . With the Mobil 1 filter being changed out every 7,500.
There are a lot of people doing this it is becoming more and more common . IMHO synthetics are the schiznit. Yes I am lazy about oil changes and yes I like knowing that my engine oil is good to go and not some petroleum stuff that will break down if it gets too hot.

I use Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic oil w/ a OEM Nissan oil filter.

I have heard that Redline makes excellent gear oil, but it breaks down quickly (my bf used it in his 85 TA and he says it does break down rather quickly also). &nbsp;I haven't heard much about Amsoil, but what I've heard is good. &nbsp;I change my oil every 3000 miles, so I just stick w/ my Mobil 1.

Castrol GTX baby! The reason why is because I saw the commercial for it and the guy was beating the shit outta what he was driving, So I put it in my car and beat the shit out of it (j/k). IMO you guys are wasting your money on synthetics. Using regular brand name oil and oil filters and changing oil at or before manufacturers requirement is sufficient. Now if you guys have turbos on your engines, then yeah, synthetic is the way to go.

I use castrol GTX also. In my sentra I ran Moble 1 and I was very pleased with it. I am also going to make the change over for my 240 come a bit more into spring. I have about 170k on my engine, and want it to last as long as possible.
