What would be a good tire choice for a 17" rim. My two front tires are bald so im going to put the rear rims in front and want a wider tire for the rear. The size on them is 215/40-17, what size would be best to go with for the rear, that is a tad bit taller and a lil wider??

no matter what size your rim is you should get 195/30/17

So I can bend the holy hell out of my rims, I want wider not skinnier.

You go to an online car forum and ask what tire size you should get without telling anyone your wheel, car, or suspension specifications, without mentioning your power level, and without describing what kind of driving you do.

See the idiocy?

wheel: 17" rs limited <came on the car,
car: 89 240sx fastback
Suspension: stock shocks and struts with tein s-tech springs
Driving style: normal for now till tomorrow when I put my new clutch in
Power: stock
other: rear end will be welded in a couple days

Anything else All I want was a wider and some what taller tire for the rear that will look decent, simple question should get a simple answer.

He's talking about the width of the wheel.

225/45R17 is a general enough answer for the lack of information given, get Falken's in whatever amount you can afford.

Kumho 711's are also cheap so pick some of those bad boys up.

I'd go with a tire size that ends in 17... but thats just me. Maybe try doing the JDM stretched tire look and toss some 16 inch tires on, its great for drifting in the rain with a welded diff.

If you have skinnier rims (7" or less) just buy 215/45/17 all the way around. 235/40/17 is the usual stagger for that in the rear if your rims are wide enough and low enough offset to not hit the strut.

Some of you guys amaze me, like you were never new to the automotive world. I understand that he posted an extremely vague question, which is no realm easy to work with, but give him the benefit of the doubt that he's not a complete idiot. Albeit uninformed.

I mirror the Kumho 711's...cheap and good daily driver tire, for those that lack very deep pockets.=)

Oh snap Aaron, did you finally get wheels?!

And to make that post worthwhile.. If you have a stock SOHC, you probably don't want anything wider than 215 if you're intending to drift (sounds like you are). I have 225's and it's tough to keep the wheels spinning even with a 2-way lsd.

fuck a 215 to a 245 is a "lil' wider"?

You realize going from a 215 to a 245 will generally change your car's dynamics quite a bit, right?

And since his "rs limited" wheels are probably crappy 17x7's or 17x7.5, he probably doesn't want to go with more than a 225.

well i went with a 235-45 in the rear and the only difference is that i have to stage at 6k to move without bogging

I honestly don't get what you mean by that. What does the tire have to do with you bogging at 6k? Like everyone else, I'm guessing you have 17x7 on the car like me. 215 is fine, keep it there. I think if anything, you SHOULD have just went with 225 if you wanted a 'wider' tire in the back. That's what I have, but the rear looks retarded at first, the wheel overlaps the rim on both sides, takes a while to adjust to it.

I just ordered 245/45R17 x 275/40R17

These are going to be on VOLK GramLights 57 PRO 17x8/17x9's.... but its for my 240Z.

how about an 8.5width for the front is 225/45 sufficient that it wont have rubbing issues

dood im on a 9 (having a gay ass 215/50 up front) I rub because the sidewall is so tall, wanting to switch out to a 215/40 or 215/45 for the fronts. If you want to drift you must realize, if you don't have boost, you will only be hindering yourself drifting on a 225/40 or wider in the rear. KAs love the 215s in the rear all day. Proper offset is key to not rubbing, if you are still unsure. Just check out other peoples cars, and find out what they did/used to get the wheel to fit properly.
