I am 14 years old as of now,but 15 October the 5th.The car im getting for my 16th birthday is a 1991 hatch back Nissan 240sx.Do you think its a good car to start with. It's not automatic(5 speed).

Well..Yea its a good car. If you dont rice it out with a 15 foot Aluminum wing..and put type R on it and shit. It isnt a civic, it deserves more respect than that. I think it will be a very good car for you if you learn alot about it and stuff, But dont get side tracked. In the year and a half you have to wait to get your license..learn about the car, learn how to work on it. learn every damn thing you can about it, Then when you get your license and you start modding it..It'll be a killer. Good Luck -

are you buying it? is it being given to you as a gift? it would depend on your situation. in two years, you could find yourself in a different financial situation. i'd keep you options open and get the best car you can afford when you turn 16...hey, you might have enough money for an s14/15....don't limit yourself....although the s13 fb's are way sexier....flame shield up...too late guys!!!

Honestly, your nickname scares me a bit. Driving is a big deal, you have to be responsible with it, but enough with the lecture, I'm sure you've heard enough of those, god knows I did
Anyway, as far as your question goes, a 240 is a great first car. It's rear wheel drive, which is a much better layout than front wheel drive (except in the snow) and teaches you to drive with a lot more maturity. Nissans are usually good for over 200k miles, meaning less expence as far as maintainance goes. Just make sure you've got a friend with a bigger car that you can use for road trips

I second that. I can barely fit a 5'11" guy in the back seat sideways. But he sure ain't comfortable. Of course you could just cram him in the hatch

I wouldn't really recommend it as a first car.... 5 speed, rwd, and beginner driver don't tend to be a good mix. Learn to drive well, then look into a sports car.
OR....
If you feel confident enough to drive it, and you won't take corners at 40miles an hour, or pull the ebrake on ice then go for it. It depends on how good of a driver you are.

gotta disagree with you blink0r...i think trans is right...with a RWD car, (if you're not a total moron) you take driving a little more serious when you start out (it's better to develop good habits early) ...at least i did when i first got this car...and besides, if accidents happen...this car doesn't cost that much...imo, i think this car would even be a better choice than a new car....i'm not partial or anything either

For the most part you were in the same situation I was in except at liek 14 I was ignorant on how much money is really worth. I started out wanting a Type-R then went to a prelude (5th gen), then a GSR, then an Eclipse GS-T, then a 300zx, then I went back to Eclipse and stuc with that for a whiel till I realized that I probably won't be able to get it then looked at talons, but I heard about crankwalk, then I came to the 240sx and for about the past 6 or 7 months I have been researching. Now I am considering an MR2.
Your best bet is to find a reasonable price range for a car (expect financial changes in life). Then after finding a range look around to see what kinds of cars you like in that range. then find a good message board and start asking questions. Try not to focus on one car because you might change your mind when you turn 16. So get as much info on as many cars as possible. Try to find a friend to be driven around in the car to get a feel for it, and go to lots of meets. Figure out if you what general things you wanna do with the car.
Don't layout a plan that you are going to get a certain car this early especially since you 14. you have 2 more years. Get as much info on all cars as possible. Even consider getting a beater to save up money and practice driving skills on then buy the car of your dreams.
About the 240, it is a great car, still haven't gotten mine or even decided wether I am getting one. Depending on the generosity of my parents and the condition of the car will decide wether I get an MR2 Turbo or an S13 Fastback.
Good Luck on getting a car

lol all my opinions are pretty much built up from my various newbie questions that I ask on several boards, so its not reallt garbage but recycled. Put it this way if you thought that I had a 240 you woulda thought it was a good post.
I am juss waiting till summer when I work more so I can try to get enough for an MR2 (since everyone on thiss board basically told me to get an MR2 if you can find it)

I think a 240 would be great for you. I still don't have my licesne but have driven at least five civics of my friends and two different 240's... All I can recommend if you want to gain respect don't do like I did and start talking shit to the people with civics before you get the car. Cuz they'll wanna race you when you first get it and you're all stock. Keep it on the DL.. get the car, and if you're really serious don't do anything to the KA24 (the stock engine). Save the cash, sell the KA, get an SR20... then you'll be in buisness and if they have an official High-school Drags in your area you may get sponsored (or catch some good attention) ... it happened to my friend and he was only 16. Good luck man.

I guess people who turbo the KA aren't "really serious".

So basically your saying that everyone who turbos their KA's which I will be doing this summer is not serious? You need to be smacked. I wish you lived near me so once I had my KA-T, I could race your ass and smoke you. You are the epitome of rice. Why don't you stop wasting our time and go over to clubsi.
