What the hell, it is impossible right? No abs, 4 bolt, no skirts, had it on the lift and was talking to the mechanic saying how I want an LSD differential. He went and rotated the wheel (duh) and we watch both wheels spin the same way. What the fuck? I am supposed to have an open dif, I mean I am tickle pink the thing is already there... but what the hell. The Dif is the stock one little rust and all, and it appaars to be an lsd. So my question is how? A canadian thing like HICAS or what? I am more than a little confused and more than a little pleased. The only thing that bothers me, is I find the car behaved like it had an open dif a little, it would always slide out to one side on snow etc... Any Input?

in snow you'd actually get one tire spinning and most likely not slide out anywhere.  having both wheels spin would help your car's rear end slide around a bit.....

There should be a big orange sticker on the diff cover if it is an LSD. But if both wheels spin the same direction is dose sound like a VLSD. US 97's all had the option of an ABS / VLSD package. But they were sold only together.

sometimes I'm convinced my friend with a USDM base S13 has an LSD.... 2 burnouts.... both leaving two equal length strips of rubber......

Anything is possible. Unless he was the orrigional owner and has the window sticker as to what came with the car at the time of orrigional sale there is no way to know it rolled off the lot with. We know how nissan marked the trim and option packages. That is well established. But it is hard to say that some where down the road some ond didn't swap the diff, or have it put in as a dealer installed option as unlikely as that would be.

actually dealer installed options were not that unusual. ABS and VLSD were options on all years and Nissan is cryptic about this at best. In fact I have factory printed out sheets that list the HICAS option being availible from 7/88 forward and then on another sheet it says they did not sell it till 7/90. Plus there are a few 89-90 HICAS cars out there.
If the customer ordered VLSD especially in 97 they would recieve regardless of ABS or not . It was up to the customer ordering the option and it was availible so indeed his car could have come stock with it from the dealer. On top of that there is a VIN code that could shed some light on the issue . You might want to ask Grant because he has a 95 and knows the S14 vin code for VLSD and ABS.
