Mobil 1 filter / 10w30 Mobile 1 full synthetic oil.

Fram filters suck man! I work part time at an autozone and we took one filter from each brand and cut them in half for this display we were supposed to put up. And fram has BY FAR the worst filtration EVER. The tough guard ones are a liiiiiiiiitle better though, but not by much. Funny thing is, STP is like 1.50 + cheaper than the regular fram and it does a way better job. We had to take the display down cuz of that!

I would be more worried about the construction with the Fram. They use freakin cardboard to hold the element in place.

Look at this: http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/

I like Redline A LOT. By far the best oil I've used. Mobil 1 comes next but it still doesn't come close to Redline. I don't like Quaker State or Penzoil.

yeah exactly! i was like "cardboard!? WTF!" when i saw it.

hahaha i dont like quaker state or penzoil either.

IMO, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobile 1, Valvoline, and Castrol are the ways to go.

The 3 top oils according to lab analysis after usage are

German Castrol
Redline Synthetic
Amsoil

Mobil and Royal Purple performed poorly compared to these other oils. The German Castrol is the cheapest of the group and works the best. It's only 5 bucks a quart. You can tell the German apart form the regular cause it has a green label on the front instead of red, and in the back it says "Made in Germany" and "approved for Porsche" somewhere in all the clutter. If you wanna know more about oil, check this website out.

I used a Mobil 1 filter ($10.99) with Redline 5w30 x 7 quarts($52) and free labor. that's 63 bucks i'll spend every 3k miles for peace of mind. Dont be cheap about your oil changes. If you cant afford your car, sell it.

OEM Nissan filters for the past... 3 years... for the altima, same with my 240sx...

they are high quality and they are pretty cheap, too.

oil wise. Both my cars run on full syn, whichever the cheapest (I grabbed some Quaker state at Wal mart, they are pretty cheap, less than $4.00 per quart), they went into my 240sx. My altima runs on mobil 1 fully syn, 12,000 mile type... I am too lazy to change my oil.

weight wise usually 10w-30, since I don't drive hard enough :)

Edit: Mobil 1 Full Syn got more expense over the past few months... any ideas?

Must be local to you, I got mine on a GREAT deal at O'reilly (I posted above) a few months back, I got enough to last me a year and a half the deal was so good, but it has held steady at my local Wal Mart, $19.73/5 quarts.

You should change your filter at least 3k miles and top it off.

Personally, if I am going to the effort of changing the filter, I can go ahead and change the oil... I don't even have to jack the car up, just slide the pan under it and I have a FRAM SureDrain, I can reach down from in the engine bay and drain the oil.

I hear ya. It's just 12k miles seems like a long time to not change the oil OR filter.

Phlip

^^^ Oh, I thought so too, I just chose not to say anything about it, 12k miles without oil/filter change was too assinine an idea to be true, even to someone who hates to change their oil... If I were to try that in my own car, I would easily go almost a year without changing

ranisron

for the altima, it is a pain in the ass to change the filter due to the FWD layout... plus my altima is down in the mean time - tranny was shot.

The 240 is complete different story - oil filter is so easy to access... I just dont' want much of oil to be dropped on the motor mount - i am a bit anal about it.

not anal. obsessive comlulsive. i dont think i ever changed my oil without spilling some of it from the filter

hahaa.........

I am saving up for new nismo mounts (or 3M window weld mounts).... I get a bit of oil leak as well...

oh well, going back to the discussion. OEM Filter + decent syn oil + frequent oil change = you are set.
seafoams anyone?

seafoams anyone?
Only when the engine was first in the car, used it to clean the engine that had been sitting in the junkyard for an amount of time I couldn't have known... Put fresh oil and filter on after that and then changed it again in 1500 miles to be safe... I also used another can to clean a fuel system that had sat unused with about a half a tank of gas in it for almost a year... Hasn't been necessary since, and I change my oil religiously at 3000 miles now, give/take 100 miles.

That's sweet, maybe I'll get one. Any problems with yours? Where do you mount it (i don't even know what it looks like)

It takes the place of the old drain plug, but the entire oil change is done without tools... Given the fact that there is very little extraneous crap in my engine bay in the way, I can just reach down and change it. This is it right here, $12.96 at Advance Auto:

in regards to seafoam, I used on both the U13 and the S13... both times no smoke at all... so I think my engines are freaking clean lol.

If I'm going to change to synthetic on an engine that's been running dino oil (82k mile KA in a 98 S14), should I do any sort of flush first or anything, or should I just change it?

Also, where are you getting redline for under $8/quart? That's a hella good deal.

I know people personally who have changed from dino to synth just straight up, but I didn't and wouldn't personally... In my old car, I seafoam'd, then ran a synthetic blend for 2 changes, then full synthetic... This time I seafoam'd 2 times, changed the oil with synthetic blend 1500 miles after the first one, ran on it for the regular 3k and have been full synthetic since... Granted I have only needed one more oil change since then, as little as I drive...

Looks like I'll be doing some seafoming next weekend then. Any particular recommendation for synthetic blends?

Redline.

Or if you're not inclined to spend that much money. Mobil 1 syn. I switch back and forth no problem. I'm just trying to find what I like better. So far Redline beats everyone. It's quieter to boot!

I used Castrol Syntec, decently enough priced for what was basically a stop-gap.
