Well today I removed the Timing chain guide I only had the side one to remove and then noticed the tensioner wasn't moving all that great so I decided to take it off for further inspection and I noticed the plastic part on the tensioner that touches the chain looked like swiss cheese with lot's of holes from the chain hitting it and even tho the tensioner moves pretty good now I'm going to replace it because of the damage, it seems like once all the holes start to connect bigger pieces will probably break or shatter off.
So for all the people who only took off the guides and didn't check the tensioner face this is still something you might just want to replace one day even if it doesn't seem to be sticking, This wear is with 140,000 miles on the engine.
Also I heard that 96 and up engines don't come with the top chain guide and one of the bolt holes is grinded down on the side from the factory because they realized they didn't need it and didn't want people to use it and I noticed mine is also grinded down but my car is a 95 S14 not a 96? Anyone know if this is true??

oh noez! you'll have to change your screen name! ;)
mmm if you really want to know just do a carfax on your car.
car revisions are a funny thing. they can be implemented in the middle of a production run. aka obdi 95s vs obdii 95s.

Mine used to look a lot worse than that, until I replaced it with another one I had laying around.. It just got a little quieter.

Sounds like some one sold you a car that wouldn't go klickitty KLACK tap. I'm looking at the FSM all model KA's came with the top 2 guides. There was just a revision made in 96, so the guides wouldn't break. With out those guides your chain can still jump a teeth or too on the cam sprockets. Big no no not to have the chain guides.

the upper guides are functionally useless.
the lower guide is the only one you need.
you're talking about two different problems.
if the guide is loose and is sitting on the chain, your problem is the guide; remove it.
if the guide is tight and the chain is hitting the guide, you have a different problem - slack chain.

Did this happen to you when you deleted the guides on your ka24de... Curious because I've never heard of anyone ever having problems of skipped chain by deleting the two upper guides.
I was going to post pictures I have of my guides, they were pretty beat up too. I only have this pic uploaded of the corner of the upper guide under the exhaust cam... All the guide surfaces were pretty "rutted"...

like i said, you don't skip a tooth because you removed the guides.
you skip a tooth because you chain is slack.
since the chain is slack it taps against the chain guide. removing the chain guide will make the noise go away, but doesn't solve the real problem - slack chain.
this doesnt apply if your chain is tight but your guide has unscrewed itself and is sitting on the chain. thats how it was in my situation.

I didn't remove, just replaced it. It just seems awkward to remove something that was designed there, and damn my damage wasn't that bad did you find any metal at the bottom of the oil pan?

So most of the damage is from the slack in the chain from the tensioner not working correctly and once I replace that it should be all good. I ordered the tensioner yesterday and while I'm waiting I sent my valve cover to get powdercoated so I could kill two honda's with one drift!!.

Yeah most of it is from the slack in the chain, and really only the top chain. In retrospect I wouldn't have messed with the lower chain since now I have an oil leak on the lower cover and have to tear it all apart again :(

I didn't find any metal in the bottom of the pan... The guide is plastic and it must have chipped off in small pieces and got filtered (didn't find much on pump screen either). My chain kit didn't come with replacement guides, just tensioners, chains and sprockets. I'll take some pix of my plastic guides and upload them, they are pretty rutted up

You heard wrong. 97+ KAs no longer use the top and upper guides, and the lower guide was revised. No bolt holes are grinded anywhere on any KA from the factory unless something's been flying around loose.
