I picked this car up about a month ago. '93 Hatch Auto 96k miles. Daily driven. I've added about 1,500 miles. Everything works like a charm. All of a sudden today, It wont hold gears. Out of the blue. Didn't show any signs.
I was driving about 25-30 mph as I always do as I dont really rag on my car when it happen. I'm cruising... I accelerate but it feels like the gears slipping so I ease off accelerator. Press it again, slipping. Depress. Press, accelerates normally so I shrugged it off and continued driving. About after 30 minutes of more normal driving it happens again. This time for the worse. Gears slipping. Car barely wants to move. I begin to hear some metal on metal contact under my car, some grinding. I pull over. Turn her off. Checked for leaks, smoke, funny burning evil smells. Nothing. Trans fluid is at a fine level. Pretty clean. No smells.
Turn the car on again... same shit... Barely drives for a few seconds and then acts up again. So I'm all like :wtf: stupid car.
Barely drove it to my friends house, He's a rookie graduated mechanic. He and I did some messin' around. Nothing works, except... Shifting to 1st gear AS SOON AS I TURN ON THE CAR and taking off. This will let me drive the car only on 1st until I make a complete stop. If I stop. I end up having to shut off the car, turn it back on and repeat the 1st gear process in order to drive.
My friend thinks I may have burnt out the clutch packs in the transmission and that I will need a rebuild.
This happen to any of you before? Please help. Give feedback. Let me know what you think or what has happened to you.
Should I swap in a different AT? Go balls out for an MT? Rebuild the current AT?
Holla Back ASAP! :duh:
