View Full Version : What should I do about my loud exhaust.

I have 2.5" catback piping to a dual tip magnaflow muffler. I love the sound, but it's a bit loud for my taste. I commute about 1/2 hr one way everyday (I know that's nothing), but the loudness is getting annoying.
It's really not that loud (I've heard WAY louder), but I'd like to tone down a bit.
Would it be a completely retarded idea to put a stock muffler on 2.5" piping? Would this completely negate the bigger piping?
So... anyone in austin want to trade a $200 magnaflow muffler for a stock muffler? :-/

Why Not Run A Second Muffler/resonator Up Stream?

up stream from the cat?
the resonator I have between the muffler and cat is already huge... I'm not even sure there is any more room there...

I plan to run a straight threw muffler as my resanator then have the magnaflow as my main muffler. That should quiet it down alot if you use a cheep straight threw muffler as a resanator.

how long have you had the muffler on there for?
over time the glasspack will blow out and thus the muffler is "louder"

That is what I did, I have a 2.5" in/out Dynomaxx round bullett muffler I got from Summit for like 30 bucks, works just fine for me.

The Resonator Will Just Take The Drone Out.... Its Just A Hollow Expanded Tube To Soak Up The Reversions.
If You Add Another Muffler That Would Make The Exhaust Pass Through A Second Set Of Sound Deadening Chambers Quiteing It Down Quite Abit But Add Restriction/backpressure.

I've had the muffler for about a year and the piping/resonator for about 4-5 months.
The muffler has always been this loud.
When I added the piping/resonator, it definitively made is less loud.
When I first got the car back after getting the piping, the car was exactly how loud I wanted it, but I guess the resonator broke in a bit, and it got louder.
I might just get another muffler welded in there somewhere... honestly I doubt I would ever feel a difference in power. All I have performance wise is a custom short ram intake and the exhaust... I figure with a n/a ka24e it's not worth the $$$ to try making it fast unless I go turbo. I'm mainly about suspension/brakes.

Replace The Resonator If Anything W/ A Straight Through Design Muffler.... You Really Don't Want A Cat, (2) Mufflers And A Resonator. Also You Have To Remember Bigger Piping Will Be Louder No Matter What.... Along With If You Replace Cast Manifolds For Tubular And If You Get Better Flowing Exhaust Parts. Power Goes Up But Sound Goes Up Equally.

Stuff your dog in the muffler.
Just get the shop to weld a resonator/muffler into the thing. The better ones cost more money. Ask the guy that's doing the work what he would recommend also.

So the general consensus is that a muffler instead of a resonator would be a lot quieter? But would I get any droning without a resonator?

That was more an explination of what you are doing compared to why.
I would probably keep the same set up you have now of cat--resonator---muffler but just switch to a muffler with some internal baffling to help dampen the noise. I would probably just go to any exhaust shop and have them do it for me, I'm sure they could get the right part and everything.

i wish I had a pic of the car a guy i know drives. he welded offset metal plates like half dollar size, to his tailpipes coming off the muffler, probably has less than 1 square inch of opening on each pipe, it putters along like a metro minus 2 cylindars. I really wouldnt reccomend this.
The best way to quiet down the exhaust is to get a turbo.

or not to mod the car at all if you worry about exhaust noise. all catbacks are louder than stock. stock piping is very restrictive and is 2 inch

My signature already says why.... I explained that the quick reply box converts all the caps into First letter capatilized only.

I put a silencer on my apex-i and it has quieted it down significantly... Bought some generic one from a muffler shop for $25.... I still get pulled over for it being too loud though.
