Just don't feel like ripping my door off to measure the stock spreakers. Looks like 6 1/2 inch all around, but looks like there might be room for 9X6.5 inch in the front. Do have to take the inside of the door off to get the speakers? Thanks in advance.
IIRC, you don't get quite as good sound quality out of an oval speaker as you do a round one. S14's have 6.5" all around, I believe s13's have 6.5 rear and something slightly smaller up front 5.5 or something like that. The door can be cut to house UP TO 6.5" speakers but no larger.

s-13's
have 4x6's (CLarions), all the way around but will probably hold something a little bigger.
it's 4x6 all the way around, but if you want better sound quality, I recommend you replace the front with a 6.5" component system (must fabricate a plate) and replace the rear with the Cerwin Vega 4x6 plate (it has a 3" woofer and tweeter), and place about an 8" sub. Make sure that you get a pretty good amp that has the ability to push out power.

I easily fit 6.5" Infinity Kappas in the rear. No modifications. Perfect fit.
But now that I re-read your post, I realize you didn't ask about the rears. I fit 4x6 Infinity Plate speakers in the front with a little modification.

No no no, 6.5" in the back in the coupes. Hatchbacks are 4x6, not coupes.
All s13s 4x6 up front, new baffles and you can fit a 6.5. Keep an eye on the depth, I have infinity Kappa 6.5" on 1/4" baffles, and they barely clear the window. Not much sense going bigger up front, that's where you'd want your mid and high speakers, stick 6x9s in the rear deck and/or a sub and you should be good.

K thanks misnomer, so I am going to get some speakers, whats involved with putting them in? I have an Awia Cd player in there, installed at Best Buy. Take the door panels off I guess. Take the CD player out so I can get to the back of it. Installer said something about 'speaker savers'. I guess that I am not going to need that. Do I need to buy wire there when I get my speakers? What else do I need to buy? Thanks guys!

OK you ready I just changed all the speakers on the POS 91 SE i just bought as my beater.
Front driver door-
two screws one inside of hand grip near the power window conrols and one under plastic tab on upper corner when you open door.
once screws are removed pull out the housing for the power controls and the door handle all held in by clips. The rest of the door panel can be pulled off from the bottom up....all clips.
The front speakers have an amp behind and those must be removed and spliced. The wire you need to cut are blue/wht and blue/yellow. White is positive.
Passenger side door. same except for that bi handle thing. There is a screw on the inside and them you must twist the handle from it's lower base off....after that removal is the same as the driver side. Wires are plain brown and brown/wht. Brwn/wht is positive.
No idea on the rears for the coupe mine was a hatch.
Have fun

damn, I hate store plugs. . . What a pain in the ass. . .
Anyhow, RotaryKnight got it right. If you have an aftermarket deck, I'd recommend bypassing your amps as well. 20 watts from your deck cut to five watts from the factory amp is pretty shitty . You need to experiment with the wires to find out which go to what.
Good luck!

I got a '90 fastback. i cut two holes in the board in the back and installed 6x9s. they're powered by an aftermarket amp. I left em open on their rear. Should I box them to get better sound or that wouldn't matter?
i'm confused about the amp thing for the fronts. the front speakers are amplified? i thought they were amplified by the stereo directly? ummm so if i bypass the factory amp, how would i get them to turn on? the aftermarket deck will turn em on or i'd need an aftermarket amp? sorry this question sounds dumb but i'm really confused
