Would i need a BOV on an automatic KA-T.. i heard from one of my friends that on an automatic the throttle body never closes.

Never? Weird. I would think when it's idling it's pretty damn closed. Or when the car is parked. Or turned off. Or sitting upside down at the bottom of a cliff. On fire. With children inside.

Okay. Automatic cars do have BOVs. It's just that, inbetween shifts, you don't release the throttle..

And we have a winner.

Unless you're a JDM kid and release the throttle right before the car shifts.

but wouldn't that require that someone be somehow clairvoiant or have some other means the common sense enough to not turbo an automatic car?

wut is wrong with turboing a automatic? You stay in boost during shifts and the turbo spools faster.

You stay in boost during shifts and the turbo spools faster.

You're also stuck with HORRIBLE gearing, and a super-heavy trans, and a TQ converter that will eventually die from the abuse (heat), and you're making ~5-10% LESS rwhp due to driveline loss, etc, etc...

So nothing is 'wrong' with it per se, it's just that a 5-speed is SO much better.

In Your Opinion..... Some Of The Fastest Cars In The World Are Automatic, So If He Wants An Automatic I Don't See What The Problem Is. Yeah Its Not Prefered For Road Racing, Drifting, Autocross, Etc. But They Are Easier To Drive, Are Still Fast, Can Set It To One Gear And Never Have To Shift.

Bov's Are Still Needed On An Automatic Not For In Between Shifts, But For When You Let Off The Throttle When In Boost To Slow Down.

... Some Of The Fastest Cars In The World Are Automatic...

Fastest, as in drag racing...and they make THOUSANDS of HP and run 2-speed Powerglides. So one gear to launch and get you to half-track, and another to finish the run...and better gearing and they'd spin all the way down the quarter.

But this is a street car we're talking about...and you're 100% correct, it's his perogative...but it will be slower than a 5-speed 240SX with the same motor.

...and (again, IMO) the stock TQ converter will not last too long when you making any decent HP...say ~250HP (crank) or more, I'll bet you don't get a year out of it. Mine was going bad at ~87k from a little drag racing and few autocrosses...they're not that tough.

...

Now, throw a several thousand dollar modified trans (shift kit, modded valvebody, rebuilt converter, more stall, better trans cooling, etc...) into the mix, and it's a different ballgame.

Yes.... But Just To Make A Blanket Statement That Manuals Are Better Than Automatics Is Wrong. Some People Just Like Power And The Ability To Cruise Without Ever Having To Shift.

There Is A Company Out There That Build The Ka24 Auto For High Hp Applications.... I Believe Its Ipt - Importperformancetransmissions.com

Automatics and manuals both have their perks, for example a 300ZX turbo AT vss 300ZX turbo MT, the auto smokes the manual to 100mph then the MT comes up and pulls away around 110mph+....i personally like autos for city and traffic driving, but takes the fun factor out if you drive a performance car with a auto, (thats why i drive a 6 speed) :)

so my guess is , if your boosting you need a BOV , because last i remember BOV protect the turbo from back pressure and make pretty noises. regardless if its stick or auto , when you let off the throttle boost needs to be recirculated or vented

How is it that you manage to capitalize the first letter of every word in every post, doesn't that become tedious at some point?

When I post at work I have to type in all caps.... When I use the quick reply box this forum converts it to that.

Yeah that's true, I accidently typed something with it caps before, and that's how it turned out.. anyways.. for the one who posted this.. it'll work, your friend's wrong, and more of the people on here say that you should just turbo a 5 speed, it's so much funner, and you have more control with everything..

or dont have a 5 speed to learn on......much less drive. Gotta play with what your delt. Fortunately i had an automatic, then bought a 5speed. So i cruise the auto, and swerve the 5 speed.

What language is that?

Here's a story about how my mom learned to drive stick.

My mom calls my dad. She says she's at the honda dealership picking up this really cool new car that just came out(honda accord), except she can't figure out whether to get an auto or 5 speed. My dad tells her cars are better with a 5 speed, so she buys one and then figures out she can't drive it home.
An hour later after realizing this, and a few stalls, the car is home.

SOOOOOO After hearing this. I just swapped my tranny and started driving it.
After 2 days I didn't stall anymore, and I also think that it has made me a much better driver overall (awareness, patience, etc.)
HE or SHE, just fucking swap the thing and learn to drive it.

Oh yah, I learned on my KA-T.

I got an option video where monkey man Nomuken is taking a ride in some locals cefiro. Its automatic, the dude drops it into 2 or whatever and slides the shit out of it, I couldnt believe it! Anybody ever see that one, Nomuken goes limp to show the G forces from going sideways, and smashes his head into the roll-cage. lol.

But yea, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Or perhaps you're like me, 6'6" tall, 350+ pounds, a shoe sized 14EEE that just really can't work a clutch in the smallish 240 without custom making a pedal.

And on that note, what's under the strange box on the drivers side floorboards in an automatic '97 240?

my friends buick grand national hits like 17lbs and it has no bov, i didnt believe him when he said they didnt have one, then i looked, you can see the pipe go from the turbo to the ic, out the i/c, then to t/b, and the i/c is a behind the radiator front mount size style(oem) and it just doesnt have one?

They might run a recirculating type, so its not really a BOV....but then again diesel turbo trucks dont have any bov or recirculating type either. :eek3:
