I am looking into buying a new car. I drive a Mx6 right now and love it, but unfortunately I am the co-owner and have to part with it soon.

Nissan 240sx is currently at the top of my list. Most importantly because I love it's look. The year I am looking for is somewhere from '94-'98. I am in TO, Canada.

Hope you can answer some questions for me before I go for a test drive.

1. Can you provide more details on the car or where I can find horsepower, torque, weight etc.

2. Is there a specific year of the car that I should avoid, or maybe one I should look into.

3. What are the first 4 (parts) things you had to fix in your car? How much each repair?

4. How much money and what options are there to increase the horsepower.

5. Is there some things I should specifically check into in the test drive or around the car. Like loose this, Broken this etc.

I am willing to add a lot of performance after market parts into the car. I heard that 240sx isn't very fast stock. But I did here that with some after market parts this will change. What are the best options.

Please also recommend other online communities for the Nissan 240sx, maybe articles etc.

I thank all that respond.

Cheers

1. 155hp 2700-2800 lbs aprox
2. 95-98 is what you want, 94 is an automatic S13 (older style) convertable
3. transmissions seem to be crappy
4. turbo is the only way to go! don't put all your hope in an exhaust system and air filter
5. in a 95-98, i have no clue. the only thing i check is to see if it has a limited slip differential

another forum is at freshalloy.com, lots of tech info, but less chatty

also, 160 ft.-lbs. torque
I want to say that all Canadian 240's came with LSD, but I'm not entirely positive about that.
And what are these crappy transmissions you speak of? Mine's just fine and dandy. The only things I've had to replace on mine, besides the normal wearable parts, are the water pump and the starter...about $100 a piece IIRC--the starter may have been slightly more.

forget those luxo-boxes, 91-93 is what you want, faster, better handling...and the girls think they're sexy.

and find one with a blown engine. and swap in the SR, or rebuild and turbo the KA....but don't waste money on NA parts. most of us do that though, myself included.

seriously though, get any non-convertible manual, and you'll be good to go. s13, s14...really doesn't make a difference.

man, I love smilies!

Dom there is a very active 240 community in Toronto.

Our group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SON240sx/

One thing to watch out for on local cars is rust, especially on '89 -'93 fastbacks with wings. They really seem to trap the water.

91-93's are not better handlers, especially not the hatch backs, what on Earth made you think that?! The 95-98's are slightly wider and handle a little better. The 91-93's are slightly lighter and accelerate a little faster. Mind you they are all good cars though!

Thank You all for the answers. Keep them coming.
I will join that TO community thanks!

So the 91-93 is the first gen right? the lights that come out of the body?

And 93-up is the 2nd gen which is a bit wider and front light are very visible.

89-94 are the S13's, and have the popup lights.
95-98 are the S14's
i have heard the S14's have stronger chassis than the S13, the S13 coupe as well.

89-90 SOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s13) "pig nose" front (fastback or coupe models available)
91-93 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s13) more sleek looking front end (fastback or coupe models available)
94 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s13) AUTOMATIC CONVERTABLE ONLY
95-96 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s14) (coupe only)
97-98 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s14) "shark eye" front (coupe only)

The engines are all (basically) the same, just DOHC or SHOC version of the same engine. 91+ had ~155hp and ~160'lb tq

Edit: I've heard the opposite james. I've heard the s13 had the more rigid chassy and the s14 was more of a "luxury sports car"...compared to the s13 atleast.

I think it goes like this:
'95+ have a more rigid chassis given the coupe-style body, but since they were geared more for luxury, their suspension is a little softer.
pre-'95 have the better stock suspension, but the big gap in the chassis of the fastback gave it a little more chassis flex; however, the heavier back glass gave it the best weight distribution.
pre-'95 coupes were the lightest while having a rigid chassis with the coupe-style body, as well as the better S13 suspension.
However, once aftermarket suspension and chassis braces are added to the cars, I bet the differences are neglible...besides maybe the S13 coupe's lighter weight, S13 fastback's better weight distribution ratio, or the S14's wider track; but even those three will probably equalize each other if the cars went head to head. In the end, just go with the one that looks the best, cheapest, etc.

would you guys happen to have the picture for each model, except the automatic version only.

I think the s13 is what I want, but not sure.

The pic in lances sig is an S13 91-93 model, Whateverjames is 89-90, and DSC's is an 95-96 S14. nobody around with the 97-98 in here with pics.. oh well.

Also many people feel the S13 and S14 have Different "Feel" because of the previous stated reasons. The S13 is a little more wild and rigid feeling, while the S14 is more refined, and subtle. Mind you this comparison is relative to each other. not other cars. Cause they both handle better than A LOT of other cars stock.

Thanks for all the replys.

Ok I think the s14 is what I mean to say. 95-96 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s14)

Although I would like to see a pic of 97-98 DOHC 2.4l inline 4 (s14) if anyone has it, please post it.

Aslo how much do the SR engines go for. For a swap of course. Are they available in North America?
