View Full Version : 5 lug conversion ... necessary??

I'm just trying to get some feedback from you guys.
I'm contemplating doing a 5-lug conversion but it seems pretty costly.
I was wondering at what amount of HP would a 5-lug conversion be a good idea. I've heard that 4-lug is good enough for up to about 300hp? Anybody running high HP on a 4-lug setup? Thanks.

Someone explain this logic to me?

5-lug conversion is ONLY for a wider selection of wheels...nothign else.

4-lug cars with stock wheels have done +500rwhp, and I've NEVER heard of ANYONE breaking a wheel off due to power...4- or 5-lug. Slicks or street tires. Doesn't matter.

the number of lugs you need is determined more by vehicle load. cars have 4 or 5 lugs, trucks have 5, 6, or 8, maybe 10? busses and semis have 471942 lugs

nothing to do with power output

5 lug conversions make you drift better. So they are necessary if you want to become a dorifto master! Why else would everyone want the conversion so much!!! :mepoke:

it will also save you a LITTLE trouble with brake selection if you decide to upgrade to q45 or 300zx or other brakes, which come in 5 lug.

rotors can be redrilled, it depends if you have someone to do it. It's not that big a deal.

Wheel selection is the biggest thing though...

I want the 8 spoke Volk CE28N, but those are 4 lug only (5lug is 10spoke). Maybe I should do a FOUR LUG conversion?! ahahhaha

its not necessary at all
stock brakes are fine, use aggressive pads for track
wheel selection is an aesthetic thing, and there are good offset 4 lug wheels if u look hard enough for em

but if you want a partciular set of wheels and like a little extra stopping power from z32 brakes, its not a bad way to spend some money.

5 lug, q45.. whats the big deal? just some more dolla's plus u get better wheel options and u get the nod from fellow 240 ppl... if your trippin about prices of parts... sell it and get a Scion... CARS are money pits if your arent ok with it.. then go do something else....

I just recently broke a stud off my 4 lug hub. I was taking a turn at about 50 mph and i guess i have abused the rear-right (olsd sucks) of my car so much that it just broke. Im now rolling with three and im really scared of breaking one more off. Good thing 4 lug hubs are really cheap otherwise i'd be pissed.

There was a guy selling a 4 lug set on ebay for $10, no one even bid on it.

WTF? go get that fixed.
I've broken 3 of them now, and everytime I've been to the tire shop, they've just fixed it for me for FREE, no purchase necessary, no questions asked.

I doubt that the 5 lug would really prevent you from breaking lugs, if you're continuously beating your car down, and turning hard enough to break a stud. . .

If you are going to talk about open diffs, I believe the term is ULSD. UnLimited Slip Differential

Simply, 5 lug is if you want to have an easier time finding baller wheels, in good sizes, with good offsets. Other than that, unnecessary.

just replace the single stud... its like 1 dollar for a stud...

i find 5lug more offset selection than wheels

tho it is a joke, but hey i got a 4lug conversion for you haha

5 lug equal not having to redrill brake rotors for Z brake conversions. 5 lug = bigger selection of 16 and up wheels for our cars in better offsets. 5 lug = better for cars that have RB conversions due to the fact that a RB puts out a lot more torque than a SR. Yes the 5 lug is stronger. Is it absolutely nesscary? No. Is it wise in some instances? yes! In the instance of running a RB series engine, I would say yes IMHO.

no... 1.4 lug retard, do the math :)
