Just wondering if anyone has a lojack (lowjack) system installed on their car. How much is it and is it a monthly fee? After reading up on it, sounds like its the best solution to quickly recover your car :D

best way to not get your car stolen = garage it forever. I've heard its damn costly to do. I'd guess it'd b like OnStar, with the monthly fee of death.

I have LoJack on my coupe. The old owner installed it and I don't think there's a monthly fee. My service with them is still going and I haven't paid anything.

its a big onetime fee and thats it.. or just get a nextel and tape it to ur car and use it as a carphone / tracking device

one time fee, good for the life of your car/as long as you own it.
It's a good idea to have the unit's battery replaced every 3-5 years as well.
Early warning is ~$250 extra, but is a damn good idea.
Price for the initial fee varies. I've see $1200 at Lexus dealers, and well.. Way less as an employee of a dealership.

One of my friends used to install Lojack in areas up in Seattle. I had one on the Lexo for about a year and switched to a true GPS system. Lojack uses cell towers....but its also a 'one time' fee as mentioned.

So if the car is somewhere where cell phones cannot get a signal, your $600 anti-theft system is rendered useless?

Nice.

That makes me think LoJack is a BAD idea.. not to mention a waste of money.

Also, the nextel phone = same problem. Not to mention, how are you gonna keep it powered? Run it off the car battery? As soon as they unplug the car battery to start yanking shit, there goes your phone.

Just a couple random thoughts.

short of parking the car in a metal container box the odds of not grabbign a signal in today's day and time is slim as heck.

lojack is the way to go.

Actually GPS is line of sight, so at least for places where there is a large concentration of Cell Towers (ie major cities where cars are typically stolen), Lo Jack should work better than GPS.

Correct: no cell signal...no car found. :sadwavey:
Lojack sometimes didnt even tell people when their 'home area' didnt have coverage.... or bad coverage.

Nothing works better than GPS.

Lojack is 'big' because they were the first to offer sum sort of 'tracking'. There are not even close to the best. I can track my car on the internet in real time. I know when it stops and starts, where it does it and how fast it was going... It will call my home, cell phone, pager, etc... If it goes outside of the 'protection area' that I set up online. lots of crap that lojack doesnt offer.

It does come with a subscription price tho

i remember reading the brochure and it stated that lojack is non transferable between owners if the car is bought or sold. may want to check up on that.

That's 100% true.
A new owner will have to pay a fee to utilize the lojack that's installed on the car.

My only concern with LoJack is once it's reported stolen, are there really police officers in the area who give a fuck to get it back? As many stolen cars as they are everyday and law enforcement doing zip about it, I think it'd be a big gamble to hope it'd be recovered before anything serious happened.

There was an abandoned car on my property for a few days last week, window knocked out, keys hanging in the column, stereo and speakers ripped out. I called the police to report it and have it towed and they said they could recommend a towing service, but they did not tow cars from private property and I'd have to pay the fee if it was towed by an outside company. No one seemed concerned whether it was stolen, used in a crime, anything. I pushed it out into the middle of the road and left it, I'll be damned if they didn't come get it within 30 minutes afterwards. Guess if it's a threat to traffic they actually care. Hope whoever steals your LoJack equipped car breaks down on the interstate in rush hour.

Lojack still has some HUGE weaknesses.

Always remember, if a thief really wants your car.... they'll get it. You still have to report the car stolen in order for a signal to be sent... since most thefts happen at night (i.e. we are asleep) that leaves some time for crooks to do there dirty work. A professional can strip the car in a few hours (plus some can even disable the system). You can then track the car down once reported stolen... but it may be on bricks. :ugh:

Trust me...Ive had both systems and a true GPS is 100 X's better than Lojack. Its not even debatable to me after getting the new G-Tracer system.

I kinda like having the option to call police or friends first if the car is ever stolen

im not sure but i believe my friends nextels GPS works even if his phone has no reception and the battery in the phone can last a few days if u dont find ur car within a few hours its pretty much hopeless anyways

I have a Viper alarm and quick release and i'm still hella paranoid. Matter of fact, i drive my families beater dodge crapavan to school now instead of my car. I've recently looked into getting lojack installed as well, but this gps system DriftGirl is talking about sounds like its the better way to go.

Hey DriftGirl, if you could send some of that info my way as well that'd be awesome. :D With all the recent 240 thefts, i'd love to have some type of gps system on my car. I know it'll be pricey, but i think its benefits WAY out weigh the price. Thanks!

Yea, make a thread about the GPS system you're using! I'd like to know more about this as well.

I used to have LoJack on my Maxima, and it was a complete waste of money. First of all, if my car gots abused & trashed, I don't want it anymore. Gimme the insurance money to buy a new car. Second, professional thieves know about LoJack, so once they steal it, the park in a garage blocked by RF shielding devices. Then they take their time to locate the transmitter and bust it.

DriftGirl

Its pretty hard to find a Lojack transmitter...they're smaller than a deck of cards. all black and has just 2 wires and an antenna lead ;)

The GPS system I use is Geo Tracer ( http://www.geotracer.net/GeoTracer/product.html ) Lojack is expensive...this is even more expensive :(

On my 240: I just use one of those 2way paging alarms that seem to work very well....

Those 2 way paging systems don't work very well through buildings and the range was very limited.
