I searched far, I searched wide, about the only thing that I didn't do was call shops up. How much does the average compression test run you? This question is for a friend...all help is much appreciated!

Compression tester will give you an average idea of how the condition of a motor is, as long as you have a power source to the starter. One drawback to just doing compression tests is that excessive carbon build-up on the piston tops may throw off your readings.
Best way to check a motor is to do a leak down test. You need a compressed air source, but it's a lot more accurate because it tells the condition of the rings, and if the valves are seated properly.
Both tests should take no more than 10 minutes to do.

You be one quick dude.

Just go down to the auto store and buy a decent compression gauge. They run about 40 bucks for a good one. IT will pay for itself after a while after two tests. Most shops charge 10/15 bucks for compression test.

I agree with Whites13. A leak down test will give you a Much more accurate picture of how healthy your engine is. It can tell you specifically where you have issues by listening for where the air is comming out.. not just that you have an issue like the compression test. and adding a teaspoon of oil can sometimes throw off a compression test.
