They decided to make the oil filter for the KA smaller.
The red seals are the same size but the new case is barely wider than it.

The body is the same hight but the new one has more of dome on the end.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/S14DB/240sx/Oil/PL24457oldNew2.jpg
It's about 1/4" smaller. So the filter material is smaller.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/S14DB/240sx/Oil/PL24457oldNew3.jpg

I noticed it was smaller when my filter wrench would not grab the new one and had about 1/8" clearance all around. I thought I had bought the wrong filter. I checked the numbers and they were the same. I pulled the old fliter and saw how they had skimped to put a smaller filter medium with the same o-ring size. This is the cheapest thing I've ever seen. I guess a couple cents on a couple filters adds up...

if you're gonna get cheap brands, get supertech from wal-mart. as long as it's made in USA, it's coming from the same plant as STP filters, which are rated the best. The folks at maxima.org have done a lot of research on oil filters with anaylsis from blackstone laboratories.

you could always run a bigger filter. i use a ford motorcraft fl400s, which is the filter for a 1994 mustang with the V6 (if you don't want to use motorcraft). i've been using them on my Q45 for a while and also put one on my 240 the first time i changed the oil. stock filter is so small, and yes, the stock filter for the Q45 is the same as the 240.

the o ring is about the same size on just about every filter, and theres generally about 5 different threads (excluding exotics ect. obviously) so as long as the threads are correct, and the filter physically fits, youre good.

i believe a fram PH5 (or was it PH2?) will thread onto a KA, but the space is really really tight.

edit: i only use nissan :)

champion or champion labs makes k&n oil filters etc..

someone should build oil filters with magnets in them, they could raise the fuck out of pricing on em lol

Can't you get a magnet array that goes on the outside of the filter? Or a magnetic drain plug.

Purolator PureOne beat out the Mobil 1 filter on a test. I think it's on the AMSOIL website.

anywho...PureOne filters do come with magnets I think in the larger applications.
All of the PureOne filters for my Acura 3.2TL has a magnet right in the middle of it.

I for one use Purolator PureOne with Royal Purple lubricants.

<--- Mobil 1 whore for life :D I just bought one yesterday, but they don't make high performance mobil 1 (15w-50) anymore  they just have that clean 5000 crap and the 7500 and extended performance. They still have the 15w-50 at the mobil gas stations though, whats up with that.

I think you should cut them open and see if they're different on the inside. That's what really matters anyways.

I use toyota oil filters on my s13 sr20det. I compared it to the oem nissan filter and its the same dimensions as the toyota one. The dimensions, o ring size and thread is all same. But from oil filter comparison test, toyota filters come out on top. Plus they are made my denso so definately quality. Main reason I use it is because I have a 98 corolla for a daily driver so that means I dont have to run to two different dealerships to buy filters.

ive cut them all open... most of em are all the same garbage. fram was the crappiest. entire thing was like old cardboard shit.

i have toyota filters now tho - filter from a hachi fits the greddy kit.

i like mobile 1 they "supposedly" clean the best and are actually rated .2 percent better than k&n. Although .2 percent is not a big difference its .2% closer to perfection.

I have never used an oem filter because Nissan here is such a damn hassle and never have parts in stock and it takes forever for them to get your order in.
