View Full Version : for those who have racing brake pads...LOTS of noise?

Well, I installed Porterfield R4 pads a week ago, and I'm just using them for the track event I'm going to next week. Problem is, on the street, after about 5-10 minutes of warming, they get VERY loud...probably the worst brake squeals I've heard on any car. It's loudest as I'm coming to a dead stop. Also, during low speeds (0-15mph), it has some noise even without braking.

Just wanna get some feedback on others who have racing pads installed. Do you guys get the same amount of noise? I was not 100% that I would swap them out after the event, but after hearing how loud these are with less than 50% pedal pressure (anything more and they're silent), I will definately swap them out once they've served their purpose.

Yeah. I only put them on for track days.

you should probably get something better for street use that doesn't need heat in them to work properly.

Very common occurance with racing and even some street/track pads I ran hawk HP+ for a while same issue i stepped down to Hawk HPS street/tracks and have been much happier

i run hps pads on my car. I had a problem with an OBSCENE squeel when i first put them on. I did new wheels and tires at that time and wasnt sure if it was the plastic hub rings squeeling or if it was the pads themselves. pads came with shims but i still took everything off, cleaned it, then put disc brake quiet spray on the hub rings and on the pad surface. I put everything back on and the brakes are 100% silent now and i mean silent. not even a cold squeek. maybe that will help, did you use the antisqueel AND shims?

I dunno if axxis ultimates are considered "race pads". They are 930 degree pads. I have no problem with noise.

I like the squeal sound... :p yeah most track pads make that noise.

Same here. Put them on with Brembo blanks and no sound whats so ever.

im running the axxis ultimates in the fronts with metal masters in the rear. I need to heat them up to get them running good. yah they squeal and shoot out brake dust, but thats a side effect of having semi aggressive pads. Im bumping up to Hawk blues in the front(180sx brakes coming soon) and Hawk blacks in the rear. noise, chewed rotors, and brake dust just make the car look that more 'manly'.

haha seriously. I do think to myself, "who cares if they make noise, these things stop the car like no other!"

and having a rainbowy looking color between the hub and the rotor surface looks cool too :P

Damn Chris, you should have figured that out. The R4 is notorious for high dust/noise. Even the R4S is not that great in those aspects. And yes, it is very normal behavior for semi-race pads. I usually run HP+ on the street and it sounds like nails on chalkboard and my wheels are black colored in a few days but it stops!

I ran real race pads once and I don't think I'll do it again. Hawk HT10 .. the brake dust that comes off those things not only coat everything but it is also highly metallic and EATS paint by embedding into paint and doesn't even clay out. It ruined a set of wheels and did irreversible damage to my paint... this was on my previous car. I learned my lesson! Race-only really means for race only. But damn those things grab like crazy. You have to be careful when braking on anything other than R compound tires. They're like a on/off switch and lock up the wheels when on street tires once you get it up to track temp. Fade is nonexistant. On a high power/high braking course like Laguna they definitely give you an advantage.

yeah, I know Phillip, I knew they'd be making noise and all.

After I already had them installed, I ran into this review for them:
http://www.selgp.com/brake_pad_testing.htm

makes me feel very good about my choice.

anyway, I know all about the brake dust, it's crazy. One of my wheels looked like some excess brake fluid (or some kind of liquid) spilled onto it while it was spinning. I couldn't get it off with just water or soap. Luckily, I had some good cleaners to remove it. Maybe it was the excess dripping brake fluid, or some material from the anti-squeal goo (which did nothing, haha).

Anyway, my real problem now is heel-toe. I could do it relatively well with the stock oem pads, but with the R4's, I never really get them to operating temp on the street, so I have trouble adjusting pedal pressure when the brakes are hot and cold.

I stay away from race compounds as much as possible. Simply not needed on anything other than the track and only for long periods of time.

The Hawk HP+ or the Carbotech XP+ is as far as I'd go .. both are light track pads, dust and squeal a lot but still streetable and the main thing is, the dust is paint friendly.

I do. I have Project Mu NS front and D1 rear pads. And I think the rear is making the noise. I thought I didn't install it correctly or something but since you have the same issue it might be the pads. I am gonna lube up the back of the pads when I actually have some time. Seriously, these pads sound like freaking Old truck.
