So i got pulled over a few nights ago because of my "modified" muffler (magnaflow) :duh: and i couldnt find my upto date proof of insurance from all the clutter of my expired ones. Cop lets me go with a ticket for failure to have proof of uptodate insurance but not the modified muffler.
Next morning i look thru my wallet and notice that i DID have my uptodate insurance :duh: :duh: :duh: . I felt like shit, but after thinking about it for a while, I NOW wonder if cops in general feel like they shouldnt let u off without some kind of citation. If i did show him my insurance at the time, perhaps it would have been worst. Maybe he would have given me a citation for the modified muffler.

There's nothing really to think about here, you just got lucky. Just make sure your shit is organized. Consider this possibility: you had your proof of insurance at the ready when he asked for it and in the end he decided not to give you any citations because you didn't piss him off.

I get it. But this is not off-topic this is the "Chat" board.
Anyways yes some cops are assholes. Even though they are only doing their job some just stop you for anything and then give you a ticket for being mexican.

I used to get pulled over an exessively. Then i bought a 89 toyota pick up and it never happend again. When i had my lowerd, primered s13 coupe, i got pulled over 2 times within 10 minutes and extremely hassled. Reason for being pulled over was modified exhaust (border III), i got pulled over 4 times in that car for the same reason really, and to tall that know the exhaust, its super quiet, maybe moreso than stock on an sr.
Later i drove a yellow GC. That was worse, i got pulled over for no reason. Cop gave me a reason that the licence plate didnt match, but he must have entered a digit wrong. Then 2 days later I got stopped at a gas station pumping gas. I guess the officer was nervous because he didn't get out of his car til 2 more squad cars came around.
He asked " do you know how fast you were going down there"
I replied, " down where?"
He asked, "Down there"
Again i asked where?
He replied with, "80mph"
I straight told him Bullshit, arrest me if that is the case because it was a 35mph zone and that is exesive
He relied with "go home, i dont want to see you out here tonight"
then a week later, same GC. I was meeting up my teammates here in San Jose at 4 in the morning to drive down to socal for NPPL huntington beach (paintball tourny) and a cop stops me while im getting out of my car in front of my friends house.
He asks," do you live here"
I say, "no"
He responds, " I didnt think so, put ur bags down and sit in the car with your hands where i can see them"
All the while he blinds me with his spot light and never steps foot out of his car. He finally asks for an explantion and questions me about my paintball guns, then takes my information and drives away without any apology.
I guess being latin is bad for your health. And if you were a beenie, good fuckin' luck. Now when im driving with a beenie and i see a cop i take it off and roll down my window and turn on some clay akin or something to avoid being pulled over. serious.
oh, first 3 cops were white, the 2 later that didnt get out of their car were asian, if that matters.

i fuckin hate cops they will pull you over for no reason what so ever, just to fuck with you. where i live they never have anything to do but hang out at the gas station or follow you around the streets. in responce to the first post, i think its rediculous that the cop pulled you over for your exhaust, and then didn't even say anything about it or give you a ticket for it. but instead he gets you for that dumbass insurance paper. dont get me wrong there not every cop is a bad guy... but for the most part the shitty ones can suck a dick

Believe it or not, people and law enforcement are more concerned with having insurance than just some modified exhaust.
People that bitch about cops can go suck a dick themselves. I mean, there can be some bad cops around there, but they're few compared to the majority who are out there just doing their job. If you have an "illegal" exhaust, don't bitch about it if you get pulled over knowing yourself it's illegal to have. Cops are out there just doing their jobs. Live with it.

I've just been lucky so far. Only times I've gotten a ticket I deserved it, and haven't really been pulled over for no reason. I was out driving one day, picking up brake parts or something. Anyway, leave the one parts store; pull out in an area where 2 other roads are merging into in to this one, so I give it some gas, nothing excessive. About 2 stop lights later I look in my rearview and see a cop behind me. He waves his hand and points for me to pull over after the light, no flashers, and no siren, just hand signals. So, I pull into the Red Lobster parking lot, shut off the car, and open my door. He pulls right behind me, blocking me from backing up (standard procedure) and asks me to stay in the car. Asks for license and reg., I give them to him. He looks at my ID, looks at me, looks at my ID, looks at me.
"How old are you?"
"I'm 25 Officer. Is there a problem?"
"No, you just looked younger"
Bingo, here's the opening I was waiting for him to give me.
"Let me guess, you saw the car and figured I'm some punk teenager out racin' my car around town?"
"Well, you were Gettin' on it, back there where you passed me at the intersection"
"Which intersection, Officer?"
"Back there by AutoZone"
"Oh, you mean were 2 roads merge into this one? Yeah, I had just pulled out of AutoZone, and was trying to keep up with traffic. I never exceeded the speed limit, just got up to speed kinda quick."
"Well I didn't clock you, but you seemed to speeding to me"
"Well I promise I never exceeded 55mph. I was going just as fast as the traffic coming up behind me"
"Right" :rolleyes:
He goes back to his car, punches up my info on his computer. Clean record. All 9 of my previous violations across 4 states had dropped off a few months before this. Comes back with my license and reg.
"Well Mr. (My Last Name), you have a good day, and try not to "Get on it" so much next time"
"Certainly Officer, have fun looking for punk kids" :D
He looks kinda pissed but returns to his car, waves, and drives off.
Now I'm sure it could've happened differently elsewhere in the world, but here that's how it worked. By the way, I'm a 5'9", Skinny ass White Boy. The cop was a 6'+, muscle bound Black Guy. Race didn't have anything to do with this encounter with the law. I simply displayed a maturity he didn't expect from pulling over a primered Import with a loud exhaust. I stayed respectful, but still let him know that I realized why he pulled me over, and that I didn't agree with it. I feel sorry for all you guys who have had bad experiences with Police Officers. We are all human, and sometimes people who are put in a position of power like that, tend to let it go to their head. It's a shame it has to be that way.

Cops are cool. You got the ticket you deserved. You’re right though he would have most likely given you a ticket for the exhaust if not the insurance, but either one can be considered a fix-it ticket.
Don't hate on cops they need to work just the same as you, and I. Think before you bash on them, Have you ever had a bad day at work? Where you ever not as nice as you could be to someone? Bottom line, people are people cop or driver, and people are all assholes.

Most cops are ignorant. Not all of them are. Most of them hide behind they're badge, and do nothing of what they are "suppose" to do, meaning "protect and serve".
How are they "protecting", when they are pulling some guy over, just to harass them about their exhaust?

who said anything about the exhaust being illegal? and where i live cops are not "just doing their jobs" because here in calabasas there isnt enough crime to keep em busy. so they just pull people over for no reason hoping that they have misplaced their registration or proof of insurance, just as IchigoMae did.
I'm pretty sure a lot of people here would be a lot more credible if they spelled and punctuated correctly.
That being said, I've been pulled about 10 times, in 4 different cars. Being polite and honest works 90% of the time, but there are always assholes that would be assholes no matter what, cop or not.
Being polite got me out of a DUI.
Being polite also got me a night in jail, so take that how you will.

i always figured, with all the rapes and murders happening, they would have something better to do with their time like catching real criminals. i was always very respectful of police officers for a long time, untill i had a really bad experience. i was tailed by some raving lunatic at high speeds for 6 miles before hit cut me off (went around on a double solid yellow mind you) and hit my car on the left front bumper. he called the cops, they came and gave me tons of shit about it. then the guy gave the cops some bullshit story about him thinking i was gonna pull over, so he went around, and i pulled out again and hit him. at that point, i lost all faith in any type of law enforcment.

Oklahoma laws regarding exhaust noise are so vague that there really is no way to protect yourself from a ticket. The law basically states that the exhaust noise can't be "excessive". That's a matter of opinion really. What's more excessive, a 4cyl car with a modified exhaust, or a big truck with a dual exhaust that you can hear 1/2 a mile away? (trust me.. there's plenty of those here) I've been pulled over twice for mine... luckily haven't gotten a ticket for it though. Both times i got pulled over for it, it was after midnight and the cop had nothing better to do than pull over the kid in the loud car. I have to work with cops a lot with my job though... so i'm usually cool with them. Except the prick that pulled me over and accused me of not wearing my seatbelt (when I always do)! That's what pisses me off... when they give you shit for something you didn't even do.

Yeah, law is redneck (western culture) bias. None of my friends with straight pipes on there camaro, GN, or Cobra gets hassled. Also, there is a group of guys that ride raised trucks (very high) with 6x6 steel bars for front bumpers that accually get praised from the police i know. It's pretty shitty.

i think it depends where you live.
socal has such a large population of japanese imports with illegal parts on the road, a cop can almost guarantee to find something thats not legit (remember cali has the strictest smog laws, yet is the largest market for smog-illegal parts from japan).
plus the street racing scene is so widespread across socal, that cops have developed a level of animosity toward modified japanese cars.
cops use a variety of reasons to pull people over and check up on them: tint, exhaust, tail light out, stuff hanging from rear view mirror (obstructs view they claim), etc.

i agree. most police dont have an appreciation for japanese imports/sport compacts since they didnt grow up with it. all they see are stupid kids driving stupidly in these cars. more of the next generation of police will have a greater appreciation, but we'll all be too old to care by then
20-25 years from now electric car drag racing will be the ish, and we'll be shaking out heads thinking WTF are these kids thinking? :ugh:

Anyways, you're one lucky bastard. I rather get a ticket for failure to show proof of insurance than getting a fix-it ticket for an exhaust. I have insurance (I don't drive without it), and I've been in a situation where I forgot to put the updated info in my glove compartment.

Oklahoma laws regarding exhaust noise are so vague that there really is no way to protect yourself from a ticket...
it's similar to that in cali. police no longer need to have a dB rating from a meter; they can rely solely on their judgement when ticketing a driver for loud exhaust. then, if the exhaust is legal, the driver needs to go to a BAR station and have the exhaust actually tested for compliance. if it passes, iirc, the ticket is dropped and you pay a fee. i'm not really sure what happens if you don't pass. do they write you up again? hahaha *shrugs*
anyway, i've never been pulled over before in about 2 years of driving; i drive less than 5 over everywhere, and no more than 75 on the freeway.

Well you can always drive under 3500 rpm or if you do ever get stopped and know that your exhaust is not over the illegal dB limit then pulled out your dB meter i think they are pretty expensive though.

Exactly. Your unwitting dumdum move actually helped you out in the long run.
If a cop pulls you over there's a high likelihood that they're going to cite you for something, but if you're nice he/she may cut you some slack (or let you off entirely), especially if you give them an opportunity. I was pulled over once for going something like 15 over the limit, but the cop was cool and I tried to be respectful, so he gave me a fix-it ticket instead for an incorrect address on my license.
