ok, well i was bored and read an old drift post about what it was and wasnt blah blah blah. anyhow, it really seems like ppl are talkin about a few things that are different altogether. i tend to agree with ace on this cuz i noticed he refered to two drifts: drift and "drift".
lets not have all these fights anymore about drifting and this and that... if u wanna have a definition of the word drift, it is sliding a car like ace said, but if u wanna define the "drift" term, that's a technique that was born in japanese driving that is really all show if u ask me.
i cant think of a way to define the differences between a powerslide and a drift yet, but a "drift" is far more complex than a powerslide because you're controlling ur car with understeer (turning right in a left corner).
i dunno if this was really needed or whatever, but i was bored, so i posted hehe. please dont fight on this post. =[

powerslide is oversteering out of a corner
drifting is oversteering into and out of a corner
both methods are quite slow actually...
but the BGTC cars used to drift quite a lot to block other cars from passing them... that wuz neat.

what you just said about controlling the drift by understeering is wrong.. what you're doing is countersteering
understeering is the opposite of oversteering.
Oversteering = losing traction to rear tires
understeering = losing traction to front tires
i have a morbid fear of understeering.
i drive a minivan and it blows when it comes to cornering..

agh! u just did it! u used the word drifting while totally ignoring the fact that when someone says drift, theres more than 1 thing that comes to mind... lets refer to drifting (by actual definition) as drifting, and the japanese crazy stuff as dorifto? that works for me =D
that's interesting about the lane blocking though, that'd be neat to see in a race.

countersteering while oversteering = understeer if u think about it. because ur not turning when u turn the other way, just correcting. same thing, just different wording. sorry bout the confusion. dont hate me =[

isnt understeering safer cause all you have to do to corret it is take your foot off the gas... thats why porsches have such predictable handling and are renown for their control blah blah blah...

I think most people that refer to "drifting" on these boards are talking about dorifto, using your terms. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> What's technically correct, doesn't really matter, and it's nothing to be offended by, it's just a term that was adopted to describe a culture, so to speak.
Thus is my two cents.

whatever... I know what you mean about drifting and dori-- i didn't convey it that way.

prolly.. no real clue cuz I've had no real experience on the track. I definitely wanna try once I get myself a suitable car.
From everyone I've talked to in Calgary who's driven the road course here, oversteering is always more preferrable when it comes to high-speed turns...
and understeering is more characteristic of FWD tho is it not? My kid brother has seen a prelude understeer crazy on a high speed turn and almost nail a median.. so yeah... not sure about that.
porsches handle well b/c of it's RR set up?

for all intentions purpose... i liked that one definition... "sliding with control" it's ambiguous enough to allow for application to FWD and RWD... <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':thumbsup:'>
From what I understand of powersliding (from drivingtechniques) .. it's just swinging ur rear out when leaving a corner (all for show apparently)
however... an amateur racer (who owns a reputable tuning shop) in my city has once given his insight on drifting and said that there are people who have been able to (inconsistently) drift and kept their times up or even exceeded their times during a race...
it requires a lot of luck on the most part cuz most racers don't focus on this aspect of racing.
