View Full Version : Tire thread for drifters(posers) Falken vs Dunlop vs Yoko

Anyone out there used either of these tires? Help me out please

Azenis ST-115
Dunlop FM901
Yokohama ES100's

Out of these 3 , i've used the bottom 2. One thing that worries me about the dunlop is that the max pressure is 55psi! ...and it doesnt have a reinforced sidewall and it seems like jello.

Now assuming all of these were run as a 225-45-17 on a 9 inch wide rim, which would give the best overall performance for sidewall stiffness, grip, smoke, not chunking, and lasting long(er)?
Also if anyone's used the new Azenis RT-615, is that something you would drift with? they are about 50 bucks more a piece than the ones listed above, so that's why i didnt want to include them.

Have you used other tires that you like that compare? Let's hear about it. If this thread seems redundant at all, that's because it is.

definately not es100

st115s in front
fm901s in the back
awesome setup. love it.

rt215 is not for rear unless you go some decnet powr, run the st115 in rear

i love FM901s in the rear though, feel great, smokey and just overall..nice. good tire, imo. i wouldnt run up front though. also FM901 and ST115 = CHeAP!!!

care to explain as to why? like to get some insight from a REAL poser like yourself... :) joke

explain what?
es100s suck
fm901s feel great
st115s are awesome

grip is excellent for drifting, the faster you go the more grip and control you want.

explain..why you would run fm's only in the rear.

Dousan_PG
04-30-2005, 07:22 PM
because i like it
whats more to explain?
i like it
i run it
and thats that.
im not going to write an essay why you should run Fm901s
do it or dont.

So far I've used ES100's and ST115's.

ES100's are not good unless they are heatcycled and worn down a little bit because they will chunk to all hell. Problem is that they like to get greasy as they get hot.

ST115 just kick ass. They are smoky, grip great especially when hot, and don't chunk. They wear quicker than ES100's and FM901.

FM901, I don't have any experience with but they last longer than the other two choices.

If you have a set of 16's, I've run 215/50/16 dunlop direzzas out front and they grip wonderfully.

I'm getting a pair of khumo MX and S03's in the next week or two. They'll both be used but I'm looking forward to there performance in drift and grip.

WTF flybert...you're the one that recommended the FM901 to me. you havent tried them yet? well anyways...my sig..those are fm901's. In that parking lot course, which is top of second gear, i burned through the rear in 10-15 runs. They smoke like MAD...and they grip really really nice, but they flex and they wear quick

Dousan_PG

what size and pressure you running? also 15s on a SR?
start earlier.

Var

given the width of the course, i was starting as early as i could..i was e-braking redline(7500rpm) of 2nd gear. The sig makes it look like a donut but i was sideways and fully locked 2 cones before the turn.

Tire pressures were 32 front and rear for more grip. The sidewall says you can stuff 55 in there. I'm getting rims as soon as SPL parts gets back to me. 17x9+20 FN01 4 -LUG, and that's why i made this thread. I'm probably gonna take your advice and go with the falken/dunlop setup. thanks.

I recomended them to you cuz they are badass in the rear. I've seen it firsthand. I have about 3 friends (dousan, doriftoPG, and slidesquad mark) that use them and swear by them. I plan on using them out back as well when I get the money to buy new tires.

One of our friends (slidesquad mark) has a 400+ HP RB powered s13 and the FM901's last longer for him than all the other tires on your list. ST115 will burn up quicker than these for sure, same with ES100's. What kind of power do you have?

Var

i only have 215 at the wheels, and 214 torque.

here's a pic of my entrance(i need more camber)

Looks like you have 205 FM's on steelies. You need a wider tire for SR because you are just spinning the wheels rather than propelling yourself forward. With that kind of power and with summer coming up, I'd run 235/40/17 in the rear on the wheels you plan on getting. It'll make for easier transitions and more stable manji action. Go with the FM's again in the rear and pull your fenders to clear them. Run a 215/45 or 235/40 ST115 in front.

205s are for kas and corollas!

Flybert

BTW, any 205 on a steelie will flex on you. Shit I had a set of 205 bridgestone potenza something or other on steelies back in the day and you could feel them rollover. After that, I only ran 195/55 on steelies with my KA.

i've been waiting a long time for a good 4-lug rim...i cant wait for these. -4 camber in the front :rawk:

ugh -4 camber. gross. too much

-2.5 doesn't look like much on a 15 inch with +42 offset. i'll just play it by ear when the time comes. Thanks for your replies, both dude-son and flybert.

I would recommend going to the tire yard and scrounging some used tires. So far I've had Michelin Sport and Bridgestone RE040 in the back. The Michelin was a better sliding tire, especially when reverse mounted (directional tread pointing to the rear). Doing this made the tire break lose earlier, since I only got a stock KA. But the same could not be said for the Bridgestones, reverse mounted it acted the same way.

On the front I don't really care...I've had ES100 and FM901 (current). I've had FM's in the rear, FM's get slimy when hot, learned this with an open diff when 1 tire was completely bald and the other was perfect, after a skidpad session, haha. ES100 was ok, hard tire, took a while to wear down.

My front FMs are still good, I think, I may end their life in the rear on the next drift event. I don't really know what to get next...might do a junkyard for the front, if not maybe a pair of the new Direzza's, or the new Azenis.

Junkyard tires suck once you start getting good. They have little control and the speeds aren't as fast.

I've used the ST-115's all around and I really liked the setup. 225/45/17 on 8" wheels. They had a lot of control and good grip when hot. There was very little chunking at the end of their life. Out of the 3-4 pairs I ran in the back, I never had the tread seperate. I was putting down around 230 RWHP.

i've used both es100 and fm901,

i've been using es100s late because i run the same front tires on the track and the street/daily, so even though the fm901s seem to grip better, i like the es on the street more, better wet traction. and also it seems as if the es lasts longer daily driving.

i've heard mixed reviews as far as the st115 goes

anyway, its pretty much preference i think, different people have different experiences with tires.

Ive used st115 for the front. so far the best tire for the front that ive ran. but i have not tried the ES or fm901. Only thing about the st115 is that it wears out fast. its crip though while it lasts. even wear, great grip.

Front
- st115

Rear
- Champiro/Federal

Winner!

var, i really wish i could tell you which tire is best, but since te title of this thread..pretty much calls me out....i dont think i have anything to add except " i am an e-drifter, oh ya!" :w00t:
