View Full Version : Drag S13
Before everyone starts popping off questions, this is a TRACK ONLY vehicle. This will not be driven on the street. A friend and I have been building this for the past 2 months now. The powerplant has not been revealed yet (we're just trying to keep people on their toes), but I assure you, it's not going to be your first guess.
The owner of the car wants to reveal as little as possible so here's all you get:

Yes, that's a Ford 9" with ladder bars and drag coilovers. The wheels are 15x10 with 4.5" backspacing. The tires are 28x11.5x15.
Here is the motor starting:

damn, those mags are hot
If this thing doesn't run 10s we'll be upset...and then make it run 10s or better.
As it stands right now, 9s are somewhat out of the question until a better cage is built.

You dick, thats not fair I want information =(
I dont like being teased!
More information will be available when we make more progress. SO MANY projects out there get all "hyped up" and everyone has these high expectations, and then 80% of the time the project never gets finished. What we are doing is ALL custom. Countless hours of cutting/grinding/welding has already been invested, but we still have A LONG WAY TO GO. I don't even want to give an estimated completion date, JUST because there's so much to still do.
I will say that when this car is ready, it'll be like nothing you've seen before, and we're hoping to get some good sponsorship to help us get there, but being that we're a two man team...we've got a long way to go.
Here's the car last fall. It WAS a fully race prepped road race car.

hA! drag KA-T for 9's? that'd be REALLY REALLY hard.
I'm voting the easier route, custom mounts an a small blck 8?
or a LS1 maybe? ...it has a Ford rear... but that means nothing... hmm...

im thinking about starting a project like this as well very soon w/ either a 302 or a 350 mated to a tremec 5spd tranny...
We did all the fabrication. We had the 3rd member set up by another shop.

hA! drag KA-T for 9's? that'd be REALLY REALLY hard.
How about forged pistons, rods, and some cams...then about 30psi. Easy.
SP / PhatKA-T just did 638rwhp KA-T setup...that should get a ~2700lb car EASILY in the 9s (with traction, of course).
...
As for the car pictured here...nice work. Come back with more pics and SPECS...and maybe some numbers, too.
- Brian
Oh but I assure you this vehicle is going to weigh much less than ~2700lbs! :hs: We weighed it in at 2499lbs with driver in road race form. Since then, we've done A LOT of weight reduction.

Clearly our definitions of "easy" differ.
pulling the engine to do internal work definitely does NOT count as easy in my book, if you're a good engine mechanic, more power to ya, but imho, easy things are stuff like bolt-ons, changing your rims, basic little mods... stuff that can be done in a couple hours. "then about 30psi", ya... not easy either, I have KA-T friends that are having probs getting above the teens for boost pressure before having problems. Can it be done? sure, it already has been, but I stand by the fact that it's not EASY. If it were, there would be no market for SRs.
Sheesh, why are KA-T people always ready to argue about the potential?
My point was that it'd be "easier" to throw in a custom 8, or some other idea, than figure out everything necessary to KA-T'it there, I never said it wasn't possible, in fact I was careful NOT to say that. Maybe it IS "easy" for you, since you clearly have experience in turboing the KA, but you're in specialized area with few experienced people doing that sort of modding, even in a forum as specific as this... unless you've already done it, I don't see how making a fully built KA-T that will run 9's is in ANY sense of the word, Easy.
I'll just agree to disagree :)
orion::S14
04-19-2005, 05:22 PM
Yeah...I'm not wanting to argue potential, just saying that it would be as easy to get ~638rwhp out of a KA as it would to get ~638 out of an LS1...either way you're opening a motor, probably going with forced induction, etc...
I just took exception to the "REALLY REALLY hard" part...as it's difficult, but no more difficult than fitting an LS1 ito an S-chassis, or tube-framing the rear half!!!
(...and for the record...I'm probably the KA-T guy who's the LEAST apt to argue potential...I have NO disillusions about what my motor can/cant do (versus the SR, a V8, whatever)...and when I get bored of it, I'll stuff and LS1 in my engine bay...I can promise you that! Part of the reason I have a Chevy truck with an iron-block LS1 already in it [6-liter LQ9 motor])

A few quick updates:
We removed the rear end for painting and prep work...so last night we put it all back together and bolted everything back up:

We rolled the car out of the shop for the first time on all 4 weld wheels:

Motor should be back to us in abotu 2 weeks...we're looking to fire this thing off before the end of the month and make our first pass in July. It's really getting down to the nitty gritty. Just hold your horses...it'll be done very soon and lots of details will be shared.

Well, one of only goals was to make it run 10s. We weren't too concerned with hp numbers since we knew it would have plenty of that.
What kind of headaches? Jesus man...EVERYTHING was a headache. Chevrolet motor, ford rear axle....EVERYTHING was a pain in the ass...nothing went smooth.

It's called offset not back spacing. Thats a weird way to read tire size. it should be width in mm/profile size in mm/rim size in inchs

1) Domestically produced wheels have always been measured in backspacing (and it was probably the standard worldwide until *recently*). Race tires and truck tires have always been measured in inches, not section width and profile.
2) the small block chevy was around well before the SR20, so technically it was Nissan doing the reinventing
3) why am I bothering with someone who is already pinked?

i stumbled upon this "start-up" video on limewire videos my 1st month living in JAPAN away from the love of my life (1999 LS1 Trans AM "Nelly"). Oh how i missed my mustang killer. Now that i've heard stories about mild s-13 pounding on my buddies LT1 "Z-28" The future shows hope for my lil
4-banger rice burning sr-20. Yall better believe theres a lucky 240 somewhere in the US that WILL be chosen to get my own personal sr20 treatment to even make Nelly blush, BUT.......I've got to hand it to MR. RIOT and co. on a job well done! Commming from a former "swapper" myself, S-10s like the small block treatment as well. i understand the hardship that goes into a complicated swap like that!
