Does anybody have any of those cheap mufflers on sale on group buy websites and aucions like border and tenzo?  I want a few opinions before I decide on what kind of exhaust I want, or does anyone have any good suggestion on exhaust.

When piecing together your own exhaust, I would first check for inlet piping size. I dont' really have any experience with mufflers alone, and I really don't want to have any either <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>. I suggest buying a whole piece. Apex'i N1 Single/Dual, 5Zigen Fireball, HKS Sport, GReddy SP or MK are all good exhausts.

Ditto, get a full cat-back. You'll get more performance and it'll last a lot longer. It really is worth it. I'm very partial the N1 Dual. I've got it on my car now and it's great. Deep sound, not ricey at all, and it's also good for a definate kick in the ass when you step on the gas <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Well, since I'm one of those people on a "fixed" income. I bought a muffler off of e-bay. OBX-R Stainless, 2.5" inlet, dual outlet. Got it fer $85 including shipping. Then I went to the local muffler shop and had them cut off the stock exhaust just behind the cat and weld on 2.5" aluminized pipe back to the muffler. Cost $100 cash. So, I've spent $185 and have 2.5" cat back exhaust. I'm thinking of getting a "test pipe" and trying that to see if there's any difference.

It's not real loud, nice and deep, but has sumwhat of a "drone" between 2500 and 3 grand. Just crank up the stereo and drown it out. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

Before anyone says anything.....No, it's not "mandrel" bent pipe. But I don't see where it really matters on an engine puttin' out less than 200hp. I mean, there aren't that many bends in it anyway. And none of them are very sharp. IMHO

Personally I'm getting a regular american exhaust with a straight through design rather than paying extra $$ for a JDM name with no real performance benefit, but that's just me.

alright.

Here's what I did:
1. Bought 60 dollar AC Revolution Muffler from my friend.
2. Had 2.25 inch piping done to my car at a muffler shop for 160 bucks.

So basically, I spent 220 dollars for the whole exhaust system.

All I'm going to say is that I've gotten great results from the setup without having to spend 700 bucks.

PS. I agree that you don't really need mandrel-bent piping for your 240sx. If you take a look at my piping from underneath my car (its on a video) you will see that there are only about 2 bends throughout the pipe. Also, the bends are very slight, so press-bent piping isn't really going to hurt you. Think about the value of the whole situation... are you going to spend a whole wad of cash for mandrel bent piping, that is going to help you a tad bit, or will you get press bent piping, get the performance gain, and use the remaining money for other mods? You can see how doing this would help you in the long run.

Im lookin' on ebay and also found the OBX Muffler. I like the B3 bomber with it's slash cut. &nbsp;If i got this and took it to a shop to get custom tubing would 2.5" inlet or 2.25" be better? &nbsp;I doubt there would be a major difference, and from the looks of it 3" is just way to much, even for the N1. &nbsp;Thanks

2.5" is better. &nbsp;techinically I think 60mm is suppose to be ideal. &nbsp;That is like 2.33" or something.

1. each section of crush bent pipe can reduce flow by 50%
2. 2.25'' is too small, 2.5'' is too big. 5Zigen fireball measures just under 2.5, hence why it gets the biggest power gain.
3. "cheap" mufflers typically have "louvered core's." another power robbing feature used to quiet things down.
4. remember, when it comes to cars, very rarely do you get more than you pay for

If mandrel bend describes the bend of the pipes, I have a apexi dual and it's bends look just like your car...and it's mandrel... so I can't tell the difference.

Mandrel bent is talking about the actual bend itself. There are two types of pipe bending: Mandrel and Crush.

The crush bend is what most muffler shops do. You put the pipe in a bending machine and it bends the pipe causing small indentions on the inner side of the bend which, on high hp engines, could cause the exhaust to slow down and create turbulance in the exhaust flow.

The mandrel bend is what is on the more expensive premade, bolt on systems. There is a special way to bend the pipe in which you don't get those indentions and the exhaust flows more smoothly. I think that they put sand (or sumpthin) inside the pipe to keep from "crushing" it. But don't quote me on that part.
