I think I have a bent rod. I thought it was a lifter but now I have talked to a few people and they say its a rod. Can I fix this on my own? Im decent with a wrench and the right directions.
OOO ya ill explain what the issue is. When i turn my car on and just let it idle I can hear a ticking in my engine bay. If I pop the hood and listen I can tell exactly where its coming from. You can tell something is hitting the valve cover(I think) right next to the spark plug closet to you when looking in from the front.
Now has anyone delt with this before and fixed it? Do you have directions you wouldnt mind giving me? Maybe a site with the directions.

I have a S-14 silvia and a 180sx the 14 has a Black top and the 180 has a red top. I hear the Tick you talk about only with my 180. What I think it is.... Well let me ask this when did the noise start in relation to your last oil change? the 180 only does it near the end of its oil's life. and only when it's cold. I guess that is not much help but I guess it is a start. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

This will be my first time changing my oil in my 240(91 FB). I havnt bought the chilton for it either, getting it tomorrow though.
How many quarts does it take 4 or 5? What is the best filter do you think?

how many miles are on your car? it is a really fast ticking ? like 3 ticks a second.. an almost constant? or slow like a tick a second?
it could be your timing chain needs to be replaced/fixed

Could it just be a valve tap?
That's also possible??

Found the problem... Well I hope its the only issue.
I pulled the valve cover off and found out that the oil flang(???name??) that goes over the timing chain that direct the oil back over the rest of the head was broke and just rattleing on the timing chain. Im going to try and find the part now. Anyone know the exact name of this part. Looked in the book and there is no reference.

Thanks all for responding, I appricate it.

Does it look like an "L"? Is it black and bolts right in the middle of the two half-moons?

I would say more of a Z with the middle straight. But yes it does bolt between the two lobs.

:-D That's your upper timing chain guide. You could very well leave it off, it doesn't serve much of a purpose.

Really, I heard it had something to do with directing the oil flow. Dont know just what I heard.
Also what would cause it to break in the first place?

The teeny-tiny plastic piece is really weak and its constant physical interaction with the chain causes it to bend and break. If you look at the chain, you'll see how it has many many ridges and many layers of metal. That piece is really not very strong at all.
Be happy your lower side guides didn't go!
Let us know how pulling that piece out of there goes!

Pulling what piece out? I have already pulled out the Time chain guide which was metel not plastic so I should be able to put my valve cover on and be fine. Correct? Any thing else I should look for?

I misunderstood you. I thought the piece had broken off and was just dangling along with the chain.
The upper guide is supposed to be sturdy plastic, and not metal.
