View Full Version : Black Vs. Red Top
Hey im new here and im seriously considdering getting a 94+ 240 (instead of an integra or prelude or a number of other fwd cars). If i got one id for sure do a swap to a SR20DET, but im wondering what the difference is between red and black tops.

Ok I have a red top and a black top. The engines are almost Identical internally except for a few things. The black top has VVT and the compression is higher than the res top 10.0 VS 9.5. Externally the Blacktop has a different turbine than the redtop stock. red top is from s13...has 205hp...black top is from s14 and s15...s14 black top has 220hp and s15 black top has 240hp..and usually the black top for the s15 is 6 speed...someone correct me if im wrong though...

Sigh, aren't you guys forgetting something? There is an S13 Blacktop SR20DET. Performance-wise, it's the exact same engine, the only difference is the fact that the valve covers are two different colors, and the blacktop is slightly newer than the redtop. Otherwise, yes, you are right on most other aspects. I'm pretty sure that you have the compression completely wrong though, I'm pretty sure that for all SR's it's the same 8.5:1.
Now, the difference between the S13 and the S14 is mainly the fact that the S13 has a T25 turbo, and the S14 has a larger T28. The S14 also has VVT but in the S14, it's not very advanced.

In an Option 2 book it gives some specs on all turbo cars. it s15 have 480cc inj, while the s13 and s14 have 370 cc inj.
they are all 8.5:1 comp. ratio.
s13 and s14 stock boost is .6 bar, s15 is .8 bar.
s13 205ps/6000rpm and 28kg-m/4000rpm
s14 220ps/6000rpm and 28kg-m/4800rpm
s15 250ps/6400rpm and 28kg-m/4800rpm
stock head gasket can handle about 1 bar of boost.
s13 at 1 bar=220ps
s14 at 1 bar=260ps
s15 at 1 bar=300ps-330ps
