I took my car into the local brake shop to have it checked because I'm having problem stopping. I'm thinking maybe a quick fix you know, 40 or 50 bucks even a 100 if it was something crazy. The guy gives me an estimate of 470 dollars. He said that I needed a new mastercylinder and new rear brakes with new roters. Now from past experiences in Japan, I've been able to pick up a master cylinder rebuild kit for about 20.00 dollars or even snag on off of a car in the junkyard for about ten or so. Are they that expensive that I need to pay 400 bucks to get all that done? I'm pretty sure rotors aren't that expensive because I see them for under 100 a pair around here and there. Can someone give me a break down of how much the parts would cost me because I'm just going to get off of my lazy ass and do it myself.

Sorry, i can't tell you the exact pricing, but i'm pretty sure that their price is too high... My friend bought a car and got it into the shop for inspection, and they told him he needed new pads. They wanted to charge him $190 just for the pads (front and rear).... so my guess would be that you can find a cheaper master cylinder yerself

most brake shops won't rebuild master cyl's cuz of liabilities. they can sell u a rebuilt cyl, but most won't do it themselves anymore. $.02

Where can I pick up a rebuild kit because I can do that myself and I won't have to pay any outragous labor fees.

I hate messing with the brakes. Mainly bleeding is what I hate the most because I can't do it my self. I bought one of those little self bleeder bottles and I'm too retarded to use that thing the right way or something.

hey junia, try the Russell Self Bleeders......i haven't used mine yet, but other guys love em . they r a bleed screw with a tiny ball & spring inside em......one way check valve. you loosen em, and when u pump pressure the spring "gives" and allows escape, but will spring back and close not allowing air back in. i've heard they work great !
my guess is any good import parts store (for regular parts) can get ya a rebuild kit..... . good luck!

I work @ a Nissan dealership. Let me know if you want me to check part prices for you, I get some money off. I'm not sure how much they would be, but give me the year, and I'll let you know.

Well you probably don't really NEED the back breaks done. If you're strapped for cash, rebuild the master cyl and replace the pads yourself, and call it a day.

First of all, if you needed pads and rotors, they should be for the front. The rears rarely warp and don't wear a whole lot, simply because the fronts do most of the work. As for the price, sounds real high. Here are some no-research-done prices, so you could probably even find lower!
Brake Master Cylinder - $80 (http://inet.nopi.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=dsppartdetail&vmakeid=270&vmodelid=120&vcatyear=1990&vnopinum=601%2B1053&vTitle=1990%20NISSAN%20240SX%20Brakes%20Brake%20Ma ster%20Cyl)
Metal Master Rear Pads - $32.47 (http://coximport.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CO&Product_Code=7146-D272MM)
KVR Slotted or Cross-Drilled Rotors - $78.30 ea. (http://www.alamomotorsports.com/kvrrotors_nissan.html)
Hmmm... that puts you at a whopping $269.07 plus a little for shipping. Still plenty less than 300 bucks. And that's for performance brakes... I doubt that is what they were quoting you on. If it were up to me? I'd make the effort to do it myself. I think that's worth $180 or so.

S13GRL, can you check how much a mastercylinder or even a rebuild kit cost,I have a 1990 model. Yeah you guys are right about the price. I think they're trying to rip me off. Why would I need to replace my rear rotors??
Hey, I appreciate everyone's help on this. By the way I'm still driving this thing around with hardly any brakes. I've gone with no clutch pedal before but this is a little scarier because I gotta pump my brakes at subABS speeds to stop sometimes. I think these problems build character though....

My brother brought his car in and they told him the exact same things. 4 new rotors, new master cylinder, blah blah blah. $500. So I checked them out and they barely needed to be machined let alone replaced. The Master Cylinder wasn't leaking and looked fine. I did his brakes and so far there have been no problems and it's been 6 months. My friend brought his car in and they told him the exact same thing. To me it's just a scam. Thats just my little warning I guess.
