With drift events getting more and more popular there seems to be a ever growing amount of sanctioning events running them. This brings both positives and negatives to the sport of drifting. More sanctioning bodies mean more events, which is always fun. But there is a negative to. With many different groups running these events, you run into a number of growing problems. On one hand you have different rules for every group. Which may exclude some vehicles from being able to participate in certain events. This leads to the next problem. And because of this you will never get a stable base for the fans or the drivers. The drivers on the other hand are forced to pick there favorite group due to the varying rules. Thus weakening a quickly growing , and easily damaged sport. A good example of this would be what has happened to car audio completion. I also have competed in these events and after three years of success I finally threw in the towel because of the same reason. To many fish trying to rule over a small pond. And this is of course all just my personal opinion and I welcome everyone’s comments.

it'll die back down when people get tired of crashing and wasting tires because folks just might want to do something cool again.

You sound like you don't know about anything you are talking about. At amateur events, we don't have fans and couldn't give a shit about fans. All we wanna do is drive and have fucking fun driving with our friends. Rules at amateur events are all the same pretty much. You gotta pass tech with your car. For tandem, you usually need to have a roll cage and side impact bars. There aren't any crazy rules preventing people from driving at amateur events.
Pro events in the US all require the same shit. SCCA approved 6 point cage, fire retardant uniform, and the normal process of tech inspection on the car.
I really don't think there is that much confusion when it comes to participating in drifting events. And how does this relate to your audio competition?

I was not really talking about amateur events. In fact I think there great. I am far from being anywhere near the pro level. It was more in reference to pro events. And for the people who want to be at that level. Where the fans do matter because with out the fans no one would sponsor the events. And intern there would not be as many people interested in going out there and trying it for them selves. Which makes companies not make as many parts. And that makes the parts for your car more expensive. As for the car audio reference they are very similar in that they both have gotten very popular very quickly. But because of what I said car audio is not nearly as popular as it was a few years ago.

:mepoke: With many different groups running these events, you run into a number of growing problems.
at the pro level the scca governs just about everything!
On one hand you have different rules for every group
i think your trying to say the tracks? or the sponsers? of course there all different thats what all professional motorsports are like.
Which may exclude some vehicles from being able to participate in certain events.
either they dont meet the saftey requirements or they dont pass tech... other than that you could drift a mini van if you wanted usually they dont have make and model restrictions.
And because of this you will never get a stable base for the fans or the drivers. The drivers on the other hand are forced to pick there favorite group due to the varying rules. Thus weakening a quickly growing , and easily damaged sport
i dont think what we do in the us will effect the foundation of the drifting culture in japan! its been like 18 years over there! and its still growing. no worries...

drifting will die out just like every other fad. those who do it cause they enjoy it will continue doing it and the rest will jump on another bandwagon.

^^^ well i guess rice was a fad, i dont see it dieing out ?
what about auto-x or rally racing? or even F1? they all were a FAD at one time or another, and they are still alive and organized. so is drifting. it will be inseperable part of SCCA just like auto-x

I think that those who jump on "bandwagons" and do things because they want to be cool are what make things like drifting or audio competitions "fads". Hardcore enthusiasts will love drifting aswell as audio systeme regardless.
WHO THE HELL CARES WHETHER IT DIES OUT. IF YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO THAN IT WILL NEVER GET OLD.
YO...REAL TALK...FOR A PERSON WHO REPS "DRIFTER" IN THEIR NAME YOU SOUND LIKE YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FAITH AND PASSION IN YOUR OWN SPORT.
WHATS UP WITH THAT?

drivers keep driving whther or not its popular
fuck popular
if you love it do it
the future of drifting is..on a competitive level it will be harder and harder for average people to enter. it's going to be at the level of road racing. you will have to have a racing license to compete. It's gives the sport credibility and there are still going to be small events for noobs like myself.

I hope drift gets mainstream enough that it's similar to auto x in regards to safety regulation, and instructor services. It'd be nice to have events to practice at legally on the weekends with knowledgable people there to share advice.
Move to socal. =D

We should archive this thread and bring it back up in say 3 or 4 years and see who is was right about the future of drifting.
I personaly have to agree with s13irdie2.
And, I have also seen a GREAT decrease in the f&f type of rice in the past few years!

The true drifting fans will still be around when the bandwagon jumpers have moved on. Everyone wants to get into drifting, but most can't afford it once they build the car. I'd like to sign up for an amature event, just to have fun with the car.

Florida must be lagging be hind the times then. lol
But here in Dallas I am personaly seeing less and less examples of your stereo typical riced out car(wing, vinle graphics, neons, weird large mouth bass type body kits that in no way flow with the rest of the lines/curves on the rest of the car ect ect).

yeh dont worry man. True car folks die hard, and so do their passions. Just look at Road Rally. Never heard of that huh?! It sounds gay to me, but its still something done within SF Region SCCA. Its the thing where ppl are given a map and directions through city streets and they just drive and get timed BUT its not about how fast u go. Theres like a pre-determined time and closest time wins... or sumthing... i dunno. might be more for the scenery?BUt my point is that fads are only fads to the bandwagon jump-on-ers. Who knos, I bet some ppl still play POGs and tomagachis and Magic cards and everything.... u kno?
