View Full Version : Anyone done a DOHC swap??

Anyone swapped in a DOHC in place of their SOHC?? Need some help deciding if i should do it, or let someone else do it!  Im getting a 97 KA for pretty cheap($800) and just wanted to know how hard it is to swap it in myself? thanks.

I put a 93 KA in my 91 240sx. Not to hard.

I would try to stay away from the 95 + swap if you are not good at swaps and electrical. Because of OBEII it is a pain in the ass. Get everything, you will need all of the sensors, wire harness, and ECU to make it work.

We put a 97 KA into a 89 240sx not to long ago.

Try to get a 91 to 94 Ka if you are doing the swap yourself. Real easy to do. Also, remember you will have to switch the power steering lines and get a 91+ guage cluster.....

Well if i get this he's sending me the ECU, HARNESS, Engine, and Tranny, so how hard would it be to do this swap?? How difficult is it to switch the power steering lines and the guage cluster??How much do you think a shop would charge me to do all this install?? Would what he'd be sending me be enought o do the swap?

The basic swap of the engine is easy.  It's just the harness are completly different from the S13 and the S14.  A day or two just to do the harness.......  Motor swap, 2 hours.

The steering lines and cluster are easy.  Maybe 2 hours to change both.

It looks like you'll get everything needed.  

If they know what they are It shouldn't be that bad.  I have no idea what they would charge.  Best is call the shop and get a price check from "Mack".

The wiring is that bad huh?? Ouch, almost 2 days? Well if i were to pay you a little something, would you be able to write me up a step by step in detail of the swap?? Including the wiring, motor swapping, anything, and eveything i would need to know for the swap? I know your probably busy with your own stuff, but if you could that would be awesome! If not , thats alright, i think after i get the motor, ill have like $1000 left for someone else to do it for me.

I saw that s13girl, i mailed them and asked them if they could give me some info, on it, or woould even be willing to do the swap for me. Im just waiting o them to mail me back. Thanks for the link thought! Are there any shops up your way that do this kind of swap?

Nah, we're 240-deprived up here. There's a shop that is pretty technical... <a href="www.garagekwai.com" target='_blank'>www.garagekwai.com</a>, and I'm sure they'd do it...

Why don't you just take the time out and do it yourself?

Id love to do it myself, but i dont have an engine lift, and im not sure if id get all the wiring right. Plus i dont know if i could get the time off work to do it. It would be a lot of fun though. Do you know how hard it would be to change those power steering lines? I hear its pretty easy, but like i said i dont know if id be able to do it. The last motor i helpe someone put in was in a "69 Camaro SS. A little easier.

You can rent an engine lift from one of your local auto parts shops.

I don't know much about the power steering systems, so I really can't help you there.

I don't think it would be too big of a pain in the ass to swap out, seeing how the cars are similar in layout and whatnot.

Like i said i mailed them, and i hope they let me know soon. Yeah i may go to that KC meet. I guess i could get a lift from somewhere huh? Well i dont know if i find out that changing the guage cluster, and the pwr steering lines is pretty easy, as long as i got some help on the wiring i could probably do it myself.
