yea im having problem with my motor and it makes a ticking noise just loud enuff for me to hear when the hood is up. i read on some posts that its the upper timing chain guides but they werent being real specific of what motor it was. i have a sohc motor for and s13 so is it the same for the dohc motor. because they are telling me to remove it but will the removing process be the same for a sohc and dohc? can someone help me. thank you

Take off the valve cover and have a look.

yeah, mostly at startup...typical sohc high miles thing..most of the ones ive encountered are like this...basically the tensioner isnt doing its job anymore...and at startup the oil pressure at this tensioner is low. I believe one way to combat this was to use a nissan filter, prevents the oil from draining back when u shut off the car...thats just off the top of my head tho from a while ago....Basically u have to live with it or do a timing chain job. Prob with the sohc is the long lower guide can break and yeah, messes some stuff up. Have fun.

its definetly your timing chain, youve lucked out if it isnt, cuz 160k is alot. i just did my timing chain at 170k and saw how messed the big tensioner was. what worried me was that half of the tensioner is somewhere in my oil pan :bite: it was a pretty easy job, time consuming but you learn alot. took me a weekend while taking my time.
