whenever i look for wheels, they're always 17x7. is that wide enough? would that look funny have a bigger wheel but not much wider? what tire width could you put on those wheels (in millimeters). are there any places that sell wheelsWITHOUT tires? i don't see the point of buying 17x7 with 205mm wide tires. i'm painting my car silver and here are the type of wheels i want

I'm hoping to purchase a set of 17" rims this summer and I have come across the same thing...17x7...205mm. I think that you can fit 215mm on 7 inch wide rims without a problem. That's what I'm hoping to get anyway. Anything wider would require going to 7.5 or 8 inches, but it's difficult to find rims in these sizes (inexpensive ones atleast).

Like DT89 said you can find wide one but they'll cost ya! http://www.upgrademotoring.com/wheels/te37.htm
I plan on getting them after my 5 lug conv. But they are alot of money. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

I'm running 215's on 17x 7's now with no probs. I wish they were wider but I got them used from a friend (contributing to his SR funds) so they're decent.
One thing about Tenzo wheels.... don't be suprised when we laugh heartily that one could almost say you have "Fake Honda Tuner" wheels.... I'll admit the price on Tenzo's is attractive though.

Considering 205 is on my factory 6" wide rim, I say 225 is ok for 7"..

stock rims are 6.5" iirc. I've got 205's on mine as well, though keep in mind you have a 15" rim as opposed to 17". On a shorter rim, you've got taller rubber, more room for it to "spread out" so to speak. In addition, 7" is only half an inch wider than the 6.5" (duh), and half an inch is roughly 10cm, hence the 205 to 215 size variance.

Half an inch is about a centimeter and a half, maybe centimeter and 3 millimeters.

What everybody else said...
and the added point that a lot depends on the tire. I know people running 225 race rubber on 6.5's b/c of the stiff and tall sidewalls. If you are doing +2 (for an s13) in a 225 on 7" wide rims, that is going to cut down your sidewall a lot! Less sidewall = harder to get it over the rim properly (i.e., many places won't do it or will screw it up). Then you've got the wear issues.
The other thing is the width of the tire. Not all 205's are 205mm across. The Falken Azenis, for example is like 213mm in a 205! A few other very high performance/ almost race tires are like that.
Either way, until you are putting 200hp to the ground, a 215 should be sufficient. Above that, I'd want at least a 225. (especially after driving crazycuban's swap with big tires AND not enough grip, imho)

bah........you can never have too much grip........that is until you have so much grip you can't possibly use it and it just adds weight......so yeah.......you can have too much grip
i'm running 225's on 7.5's, i don't think that's too much tire at all, now 245's may be pushin it a bit

I've got 225s on 17x7s with no problems...

Why is it that you're having a hard time fidning wheels with s wider stance......good 'ol FWD market...that's why. So many more of todays wheel manufaturers are starting to produce wheels with FWD widths and offsets because of the huge growth of the import industry...which, in the big picture, consists of mostly Hondas/Acuras, ect.
You can find wider wheels...trust me....just have to look harder. You shouldn't have a problem fitting a 225mm tire onto a 7.5".....I'm getting 215s for my stock SE wheels (yes, they are 6.5 wide) and won't have any problems with them....seen them on another car. But, like others said the type and design of tire will also factor into it fitting right as well.
I plan on getting the Volk Te-37s.....
Front: 18x8 (245mm tire)
Rear: 18x9 (255 or 265mm tire...haven't decided yet)
...with the right offsets of course...hehehe...can't wait:)

whats the point of getting 9 inch wheels? unless your pushing crazy hp, its seems pointless. id rather have lightweight 17x7 wheels. remember, wider=heavier.

what Vancouvers14 said and Tnord said.
As for oversizing tires on the rims, it depends on how you drive and what you expect. Sure, and extra 10mm's will fit, but...
I wouldn't do it b/c I am sometimes hard on tires and the though of it losing a bead on an autox or road coarse where you are already near the limit scares the hell out of me. Not worth it for 10mm of rubber. If you do street driving and never *really* push the car, you may be fine, but again - is it worth it?

of course, you could go with 16x8's and have potentially lighter with a bigger contact patch and less rotational mass towards the outside. taller=heavier as well
Looks wise (I know, I know <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> ), 7" rims look so anemic.

Because that's my eventual plans...to have crazy hp...well no that crazy....300 or so to the wheels. Enough so I don't have to worry about saving a couple of pounds by going with a skinnier wheel....how bout that?? I've always wanted some meats out back....just my preference. May not go all that big when going to buy wheels anyway.....it's just what I'd like:)

I'm planning on getting 16x8's. I think that's the perfect size for an s13.

thanks for the replies. any certain kind you're looking at transient? buddy clubs are cool because they're cheap, light, and wide (16x8). i may get them, but they aren't the look i was going for.
