I'm trying to recommend cars for a friend of mine, who will be buying one fairly soon. One of the requirements is that it has to have a lot of performance potential. So far I have brought up:
S14 240SX
S13 240SX Coupe
FC RX-7
Supra MKIII
MR2 MKI
MR2 MKII

Yup...I think that's pretty much it. He really kind of doesn't want to go with the 240SX's because he thinks that in every aspect (driving skill, and modifications), he would be behind me. So with the one remaining, which one would you choose? And are there any others that I perhaps missed and should bring up to him? Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, no domestics are in the search. He doesn't like modern day domestics, and the older ones really aren't all that practical. I'll bring up the 300ZX TT, not one of my personal favs though, probably why I didn't think about it.

If he doesn't want a 240, I would say get a MKI supercharged MR-2. You can find them for about $3k and a lot of them are very clean. I like the MKI better than the MKII and the supercharger on the MKI is a better option than the turbo on the MKII. This is because a lot of people have lost their MKII turbo when going hard through a corner because boost kicks in and sends them spinning

Ask your friend these questions or answer them for me.

Is this a project car or a daily driver?

Does he want a car with a hell of a lot of parts to work with?

What kind of budget is he working with as far as purchase of the car and the modifications go?

What's his MAIN goal with the car? Drag race? Auto crossing? Mountain passes? Highway battle? All around?

Good luck with the car purchase and do PLENTY of research for each car you're considering so you'll be well aware of common problems with each car and know what you're getting yourself into. Cuz the neat fast ride you purchase could very well be the one thing that pisses you off.

Yes, I already asked these questions, I guess I shoulda put all of the answers down for you guys to see. It needs to be a daily driver, while being a project car at the same time. He will be working with between a $10K to $15K budget, so just think of the mods he could get with one of the older model Supras or MR2's.

As for the main goals, well, he hasn't decided. I asked him, if he wanted a track warrior with a lot of power, and good handling, a monster drag racer with lots of power, or a drift machine. His answer was "I'm not sure yet." Which was a big time set back for me (and now you guys too). But since that was his answer, we are going to assume that he wants an all around car that can tear up the mountain passes, and eat em up in the highway battles.

some people are gonna want to kick me in the balls for this...but those people are idiots

here are a couple cars that were left off the list that belong on there

Civic Si......had an experience with one last week, man that thing was fun to drive
integra gsr-i assume it's pretty much the same experience as the si
Z32NA-i had one, and thoroughly enjoyed it
2nd gen miata-drove them all summer as i work at mazda, so fun i decided to build a race car out of one

yes, 1.8 miatas are HELLA fun

too bad everyone else thinks of them as a girlie car. i see them as the reincarnation of the classic british roadster (in fact, they made a british racing green miata!

The Miata is one that should definitely be on the list that I forgot about. Peter Farell was driving this sweet one when I was going to his shop to look at an FD RX-7 that I was interested in. I'll bring that one up...thanks for reminding me!

i saw a miata with a 2 rotor swap and 580hp i believe...on a nearly 2300lb car that is some SERIOUS power. those miatas have a lot of potential because of their weight. get a s14 and turbo that puppy. or you could go with a supra (im guessing the 15k is only for mods not for buying the car) you can have a 10 sec car

I say he should find a mitsubishi starion and fix it up. That car is badass

Well, all the cars listed were FR, i'm guessing he wants to stick to an FR format.

Personally for me (if I wasn't going to get a 240) it would come down to the Supra MKIII or the 2nd gen MR2. Toyota runs a very close second to nissan concerning favorite companies. Both the supra and the mr2 are great cars, very well built, and they are a bit more sophisticated than a 240sx, but then again, they're more of a competition with the 300zx.

I have a great fondness for MR2's, but you really have to know how to drive them. As was stated earlier in the post, they are slightly unstable. Once you get past that though... I think they win out just slightly over the 3rd gen supra.

Also, have you thought about a z31? They're a bit old, but if you can find an 89 in decent condition, it'll be fairly cheap, and it's also a really good car. Think of how much you could do to it with 12 grand left over after the price of the car

Turbo Eclipse/Talons are fast too. 5 speed maximas are fast, smooth, and don't attract cops as much. Depends on what your friend likes. Straight line accelleration or good handling? Anyhow, your friend needs to take several test drives!

Yeah, preferably he would like the FR format. He drove my 240 (it's the first time I have let anyone drive it, and it was his first time driving FR...what was I thinking?! lol), and was like "holy shit this things responsive!" He was very impressed and wanted a rear wheel drive car after that.

hey, this is the friend DRDubbleB aka Brandon was talking about. Yes, i think it's time to move on to manual, so im trying to get a feel for what kind of car will fit my needs. I've been getting a crash course in everything cars for the last month, thanks do Brandon, but a good portion of it is still beyond me.

All i want to do is become the next Takumi. Is that too much to ask? pffft I've pretty much decided to get an S14 240sx, and work from there, but i've still got a few months to make a final decision. It's all about the research right now. I've been trying to cram in too much information at one time, tho. I've got other stuff to worry about besides cars, sadly.

btw, Initial D has been owning me lately.

Yeah, so the cars that I told you all that he didn't want, well, he changed his mind after I let him drive it!
