yuhp the title says it all...cylinder # 4 closest to firewall... i threw a piston and it shot the sparkplug out of its cylinder and fried the sh*t ouf of my coil pack....i drove it back from sata cruz on 3 cylinders after unplugging the clip on the # 4 injector... now i know for sure that im going to be rebuilding this... do any of you guys know of a site that sells a full rebuild kit? im looking to go aftermarket and not oem... my real question is; is there an chance that my motor will not be rebuildable?

Chances are the block is still good, and all the lowers. I have an extra head you can have for cheap, valve train, and coil packs. I can even port it if you would like to help. Dont miss out on this oportunity to build a motor that will make crazy hp, or last and make great hp. I rec the great hp. Anyways. Let me know.
Btw This is Luke the NCDA instructor. Hope you can attend more of our events.

what do you think the chances are that my block can still be good? im doing a compression test this friday to see if it still holds comp... but is there a chance that my head just went bad?

Pretty mild setup to be detonating and blowing motors. What was your timing set to?

If you need a new block let me know (pm), I have a spare long block. Im located in Milpitas.

The best way to find out if your block is still good is to take off the head and look for any damage on the walls. If you can feel any dents/scratches with your finger or nails its over and your gonna need over sized pistons + bore out or a new block.
I think you should be all right even though thats some pretty bad detonation. My CA18 hates this shitty ass 91 oct too but it runs super rich. Hope the damage isnt that bad.

ahh my pm thing is wierd, it keeps saying I have new messages, but i go to it and there are none. I dont know if you tried pming me. my email is

1) how do you know for sure you will need to rebuild the engine at all? how bout put a new spark plug and coil pack in and see if that solves all
2) if the spark plug did come out, either it wasn't on tight, or the spark plug hole threads are shot... meaning if not the bottom end, at least the head will need to be replaced
3) compression tests alone will not always tell the whole story.. depending on what happened, the crank and/or end caps may be scored also
4) what conditions brought about this failure? something like that doesn't "just happen"

if you remembered from his previous thread. he sprayed the shit out of his engine bay with spraypaint. he stated that it'd be temporary and will "make things better." obviously, things did not get any better. the moron probably advanced the timing.

hey i replaced all that crap that wasnt my choice...so if you want to make pointless comments do it in another thread not this one..idiot.. anyways... timing was set to stock... im doing all the things JH had mentioned on top of the compression test... and ill keep you guys posted... dont have that much time at the moment due to school and work...
i just want to do a rebuild because i want to be able to support my nice GT2535 thats just being used as a paperweight at the moment... and now would be a good time... i have my CRV daily driver so downtime isnt that much of an issue...
oh well ill keep you guys updated...

YES because we all advance our timing when we spray-paint the engine bay...

So perhaps he DID advance his timing, and sort of omitted that fact from this thread, probably because he realized thats what did him in...
Otherwise, how do you explain what happened? Engines don't just go shooting spark plugs around 'cause they're bored...

Not sure man, but i just know timing doesnt advance with the help of rattle cans :)

TIMING WAS SET TO STOCK... unless theres a magical way that the timing advances itself...

So...still no idea what happend? 10.5 psi isnt really something that will just blow your engine. Are you still running the stock sidemount? If you are, you think it was possible you had a spike and thats wut caused it to go?

Easy, if you had a bent valve or threw a rocker arm that will happen. Pop the valve cover and let us know what you see. See rocker arm bits, or tossed guides/shims, yeah I'll describe exactly what happened and how your piston blew up to kibble and how deeply scored your cylinder walls will be. If the spark plug is hard to pull out or undo, chances are you busted up a valve and it split from where the metals start to differ from the valve section and the valve stem. The timing stuff sounds unlikely but the rocker arms gettin tossed sounds like it'd do it. It's an easy check. Do it and let us know.
you still need to determine the true cause of the problem before automatically jumping to the conclusion that you want/need to build the motor up. what if, for example, you had a setup with a faulty short on a fuel inj harness causing an injector to wash out a cylinder, leading to ring failure of that cylinder? without diagnosing the true prob, it wouldn't matter if you rebuilt the motor to handle 5000 hp, you'd still end up with a problem when you put it all back together. so do you see how it's not a good idea to just say "oh, something blew on the engine, time to build it up like crazy!"
in fact, if you're not even sure how to go about determining the cause of the failure, then tackling a full engine rebuild is way more involved, and you'd have a greater chance of mucking that up. Take shit one step at a time...find out what exactly has happened to the motor...pop the valve cover, drop the oil pan, read the oil filter, etc. And figure what did you do to the engine that caused it to puke? there's no shame in admitting if you did do something (too much boost? over-revved? botched wiring job when trying to install some aftermarket fuel controller? etc etc...). the shame comes if/when you don't even try to figure out what went wrong and the true extent of the damage to the current motor, spend all this time and money on building up a motor, and then blow that one up too.

yes i am fully aware of that JH...thanks (non sarcastically :) )yes i am running stock sidemount.. i planned on taking off my valve cover within this week.. kind of hard when you go to school in the morning and then to work right after. thats the only reason i havent found a cause yet..but if i find anything new i will take pictures...im getting my spotlight from work tomorrow night... its the only time i can check things out...my boost didnt spike or anything, but it wouldnt hold it would hit 10 then go down slowly...
before it broke down, these was a ticking come from the valve cover...the sound was kind of in the middle of a small exhaust leak and valve ticking...so tomorrow night thats the first thing im going to take off is my valve cover and inspect... ill keep you guys updated...
im also picking up some coil packs to see if it was really just a loose plug...
180fan- the plug wasnt stuck in any way... it came out all the way...
but first things first, valve cover comes off tomorrow and an updat comes.

well i took off my valve cover to insepect for anything irregular... everything in there seems to be in shape.... i took out one of my spark plugs to see if it will thread into the 4th cylinder and it does... but the amount of thread it takes to tighten is less than the rest by a little bit... but you can tell the difference... and my other plugs were loose... so im going to be picking up coil packs to see if its semi ok.... im going to do a compression test also before that... im just waiting for my friend to find his compression tester.... here are some pics... sorry one is kind of blurry... i took the pics with a phone... camera wasnt charged... i resized them... if you can spot anything irregular let me know...

Do us a favor....take a couple pix of your plugs too. I wanna see what they look like. Plugs will tell you if you were running lean or not specially the #4 plug if you still got it.

im starting to lean more on the "my motor is ok" side because from what remember, the plug was still clean... just a tiny bit sooty from a little richness..
