Im working on a 6speed DE swap for a friend. I got the Ka out with no problems. But I am concerned with the remaining work. Its a beautiful 95 S14 auto. Im putting a S15 DE and 6 speed manual running gear in the older chassis.

Will the transmission Fit?
I dont have it here with me to compare. I have EVERYTHING that I think that its going to take to complete the swap but I just need to know if It will Physically fit in the car without some crazy mounts having to be made.???

I know Im new at this site. I searched as much as my brain could take and I didnt find what Im looking for.

Thanks for the help guys.

Considering that the tranny is probably the same as the S15 sr20det tranny, it will definitely fit.

I don't know for sure, but isnt the S15 speed sensor in the diff instead of the trans like on S13-14?
I thought I read that somewhere. Might be something worth looking into before you get into trouble.

yeah, I must agree w/ warrior. I'm pretty certain that the speed sensor is in the diff of an s15 and not in the tranny. If that's the case, no speedo. BUT, there is a way around that. I once found a speedometer for a boat that uses GPS to calculate speed, and is supposed to be accurate w/ in a mph or two.

also there is supposedly (I have not looked as i dont have a 6-speed trans) a flat area in about the same spot as the sensor on the 5-sp if you drill the case the drive gear and everything is there this would take a shop manual and possibly disassembly to confirm but I am merely going with information have aquired.
IIRC Yuri from HT was the one that did it had a full install on FA check out the advanced forum and the Archives i thought there was even a diag and shit of where to drill and what size ect

Hey, I appreciate the heads up. The owner might have to have to deal without at speedo for the time being while I get the rest of the car together for its maiden drive...

blah...6 speed is over rated, just sell it and get a S14 tranny for it, less headache and beefier gears

the s15 de isnt worth and the 6speed is more brittle , on top of that your speed sensor is in the diff and your gonna kiss your AC good bye , and STILL NO TURBO!!! just throw in the s14 tranny it has better stronger gears and better gear ratios for drifting , on top of that you wont have to custom the s15 drive shaft with the 300zx yolk , you can just throw in a plain s14 driveshaft no mods required

Interesting reading .

So trixxxr4_kids exactly what is the deal with the drive shafts , sounds like you have done it before.

I have just purchased a s15 6 spd box to convert my UK spec sr20det auto to manual, i have both s15 drive shafts do i need to get them chopped or will they fit with either a std s14 lsd or a s15 lsd. I need hard facts on this , only tell me what you have seen with your own eyes i don't want rumors....

On a lighter note for the original poster, if you head over to sxoc.com , John Bennett as made an adapter that reads the abs rear sensor and drives the speedo

Thanks

Just get a s14 KA trans and diveshaft, you wont have to worry about anything.. Bell housing are different on sr and KA engines..

cookie the s15 lsd carries the speed sensor so if you plan on putting the s15 tranny get the diff. or no speedo you could also just get the s14 SR tranny(way stronger) and driveshaft and be done with it ... the s15 tranny really is weaker..

Hi.

Already got the trans , paid 1100 dollars (converted from pounds) with 13K miles on it.

The s15 diff does not have a speed sensor [FACT]
It has a ABS sensor and the S15 ecu's convert the pulses to speed to drive the dash[FACT]

As per my original post a chap in the uk makes a converter to drive a std s14 dash from the abs sensor.

I have also been informed that as i have the s15 box and both propshafts they will fit a s14 without modification

The S15 box will happly run with a 400bhp car (blitz have a s15 with over 400bhp running the std s15 box (they like to make a point of this))

The s14 box is more reliable than the s15 because there is less to go wrong, but they both have the same major failing in that they overheat and destroy the bearings. (the s15 does also have circlip that can brake loose but that is quite rare)

If your running big BHP make sure you fit an oil cooler to the box (UK autos not sure about US have an oil cooler that can be adapted).

I am not going to be drifting my car so an s15 box will be fine and on a sr20de engine (like the original poster) its not going to make enough power to tax the box at all.

Hope this helps squash some of the rumors about the s15 parts.

I wil fully document my conversion to help in the future.
