So I had my car with an SR in it for a year. Broke off 4 exhaust manifold studs, and with a blown turbo, this happened. Everything black, the head, block tranny, wiring harness, vacuum lines, engine bay, everything ...

Everything was sandblasted, and cleaned, then added a few parts, fixed the studs, rattle canned the bay, and got a few things sent off to the powdercoater. Oh yea and what it really takes to do an S15 turbo is, reclock air inlet, need new oil/water lines, or bend hard lines :jerkit: , new oil outlet, or slot the stock T25 ones, new longer oil outlet hose, and the charge air outlet is now 45 degrees insted of 90, so the hotpipe need to be modified. I guess you learn by experience not message boards.
Other than that and a few other stripped bolts around the car, things weren't too hard, and everything was done at blu808's garage. Only a few things were done outside the garage. Tig welding done by Dan G. at DGR fabrcation in Santa Clara, and powdercoating by the guys at SRS refinishing down the street from DGR. Everything else was done by Luke and I. The powdercoating color is candy purple, but looks dark blue in the photos. In the sun, its like a black chrom velvety purple, you gotta se eit in person, pics don't do justice.

what kinda spray did you use on in the bay? That powder coated stuff looks great
BobbyBoy

it was that high temp 1200 degree paint. I got it at autozone, becasue it was the closest color match. I went to the store sprayed each finger a diffent color of blue went home and that one matched the best.

I am using a 5 megapixel canon S50 in auto setting on a tripod. Lukes rotors look red because of the reflecting light off of the red engine stand.

Very nice photos, your bay cleaned up nicely.
I like the little touches, like the radiator brackets and strut brace brackets, pulleys etc. If you polished or painted/powdercoated your intake manifold it would look very nice :).
Makes me wish I had a good sized garage to work in :)

Except that message boards, specifically FreshAlloy, told me all of that years ago on how to install a S15 turbine onto a S13 SR20DET. :P
Or you can just use KAZAMA clocking plates, like me.. if you're lazy.
Anyway, good job on the car dude, I was going to comment that at least now, you can paint your engine bay, but you obviously beat me to it. :)
PS - Ask Luke how much he wants to powdercoat my SR valve cover black. ;)

wow!! very well done!! i'm actually working on my car right now doing almost exactly the same thing... just got couple questions for u...
where did u get the studs and bolts on the ehxaust side of the engine? and how did u mount the turbo to the exhaust manifold, with studs and nuts, or bolts and nuts, did u use lock tie or lock washers (cause i know a lot ppl with bottom mount turbo has the problem of turbo come apart after hard driving for a while)? also what kind of stainless steel lines are those for the turbo oil and coolant? where can i get those and how much they cost? also how did u wash out all the grease on the engine? with just engine degreaser? also where did u buy those extanded bolts for the engine stand, i cant find them in any local hardware stores.... thanks for the help in advance!!!

yeah, normal paint can't take the heat. you need to get it powdercoated.
mr_240sx
02-20-2005, 06:18 PM
ok thats what i thought but wasnt 100% sure.......
is powder coating just a different way to lay the paint on?

02-20-2005, 06:21 PM

Yes it can. My old valve cover was color matched for four years, never had an issue. In fact the heat helped to cure it even better, I sandblasted it last week and spent double the amount of stripper and sand than normal to get it all off.

OEM studs, the nuts i got from my mechanic. I used studs and nuts, no lock washers, and tack welded the nuts to the turbo, they wont come off, but can be grinded for removal. They are Taka oil and water lines. I used foamy engine brite, then sandblasted the entire block. The extended bolts for the engine stand are the tranny bolts.

what exactly is powder coating??
Powder coating is where a very fine powder is applied to metal via static electricity and baked into the metal. If it is done right almost nothing will take it off.

Yea the meet was pretty cool, I managed best 240. You should have seen the look of everyone as the "blue car crew" rolled in, which was my car, a GTR, a TT 350Z and a SC 350Z.

Great Oden's raven that car is hot!!! Holy mercy. I never thought I could be persuaded to actually undertake the beast that is the 1580 conversion but your car makes me want to.
I'm not, of course...because I'm not a glutton for punishment. Definitely the hottest S13 I've ever seen. Maybe even the hottest S chassis. I don't mean to sound like a rambling idiot but that car is ridiculous. Okay I'm done.

so powder coating uses some sort of powder and then you put the paint over it?? so would i still be able to use the same house of kolor paint to match my car?
ScottMan
02-21-2005, 09:00 PM
^No. The powder is it. The powder goes on dry (obviously) then when they bake it it sort-of melts to a more shiny and smooth surface. If you can't find a powder coat to match your body color you're probably out of luck. Again, the powder is the top coat.

BobbyBoy
02-23-2005, 09:55 PM
Prolly like $50 i would guess. I paid $200 for all my stuff powdercoated, like 10 different parts. There are like 9 different powdercoaters in Santa Clara. The guys I use do a lot of industrial large projects, so priority on auto parts are put after their thousand dollar jobs, but i like their quality, and the guy there is friendly.
