I chopped the threaded portion off of my pilot short shifter today and it made a WORLD of difference! I suggest everyone do this.

I have pics.....but don't know how to post them....

Help.

did u re-thread it?? careful, cuz u can yank the knob off at a bad time if only held on by set screws <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/butbut.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':but:'>. i love real short shifters.....blast to drive <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Nope, momo knobs don't thread.
Those set screws hold pretty tight, i've never had my *knob* move at all (you know what i mean <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/whatsthat.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':whatthe:'> )

c'mon, someone tell me where i can post pics so that i can throw 'em up...

sure they thread on, thats what the black plastic/rubber inserts are for <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/eh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':eh:'> . thats cool though, i've just had em yank off b4 when shifting real hard <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> , so i always re-thread.

Um.....the black condoms are for a tight fit, they don't "thread" to anything unless u use one that's too big.
How do you shift? Don't take this the wrong way or anything but yanking up on the knob durring a shift accomplishes nothing; it's more efficient to pull down or push up.

BTW: Nice ride!

hey how short is your shifter? &nbsp;cuz my friend got the option short shifter in his wrx and its a short throw. &nbsp;u can slam thru gears easily.

From 1st to 2nd it's a 3.25" throw, center to center. Still shifts smoothly (not much force required).

really dood, the inserts are used to "thread" on. even the harder plastic kind that comes with the cheaper knobs will "bite" onto the threads. as u thread on the Momo with the softer rubber insert it &nbsp; spreads the insert out and locks tighter into the inside of the knob. the set screws that come with most knobs r so it won't spin back off......they lock the knob in place.
i used to yank the knobs off in my MG's when i cut down my shifters before i realized i could re-thread the shaft. i used to drive real aggressively back then......RWD in such a small car was a blast......drifting, sliding etc etc &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'> &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'> . i haven't driven my 240 yet (other than to-and-from body shop) cuz i'm still puttin it back together. anyway, thanks! it's been a fun project so far <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

The friction fit between the rubber and the knob does help to some degree but what u have to relize is that the co-efficient of static friction doesn't change and since your not threading the rubber into the knob itself, you can't possibly achive a higher slip resistance due to the thread (IOTW: if the rubber can't slip on the lever, it will slip on the knob, it's standard dynamics.) So, no u do not have to thread the lever as long as you can achieve the same compressive stress in the connection.

Plus u shouldn't be pulling up on the lever, agressive driving doesn't mean trashing your tranny.

The rubber also absorbs some of the stress that is produced from the vibration of the shifter, thereby making it harder for the screws to come undone and your shift knob to get loose.
