Ok guys, first off, beware, this is going to be one of the longest posts that you have ever seen. Now, here's what I have so far. I decided not to wait until the last company e-mailed me, but will post this later on in the thread. We can at least decide who we would like to deal with most to this point, and then after that, if the final one sounds more appealing, we can go for them. They all got the same e-mail from me, so I will post that first, and then I will post their responses below that. Here is the e-mail that I sent them:
Hi, my name is Brandon Boldenow. I own a 240SX, and was looking into doing an SR20DET swap. Recently on one of the forums that I post on, someone posted a thread about group buys and what people would like to see become a group buy. A lot of people mentioned the SR20DET as being an option for a group buy. I took it upon myself to contact a company to see if I could set something up, unfortunately, it looks as if the group does not want to go that direction because some parts that should really be included in the cost, are not included, which is why the price was so low.
Anyways, I was wondering if it would be possible to set up a group buy through your company? If so, would we be able to buy S13's, S14's and S15's, or would it be limited to one type of engine? The previous company limited it to S14's only, and that deterred some people.
Also, if it is possible, I would like a listing of everything that would be included with the engines. The group needs to know exactly what they are getting for their money. Here is a small list that we made up of things that we would like to know were included or not:
Top Engine Harness, ECU engine harness, ECU, Lower Engine /
transmission harness, Power Steering pump, Power Steering high pressure Line
Power Steering reservoir if SOHC car, DOHC has correct reservoir, Alternator,
Starter, AC compressor, Ignitor Chip and assembly, Wastegate solenoid
controller, Turbo inlet pipe, Turbo outlet pipe, Canister, Engine mounts, MAFS -
SOHC can be wired to work, Turbo, Wastegate actuator, Cam Angle Sensor, Throttle
Body, Turbo exhaust outlet extension, Bell housing bolts. If you can think of anything else that is not on the list, please include it.
On top of that, obviously we want price quotes, and general shipping prices would be appreciated (if it was shipped to the east coast, west coast, or in the middle of the country, use CA, VA, and TX if you like), but they are not necessary at this point. Also, if you could give us an idea of how many miles we can expect the motors to have, that would be much appreciated as well. This of course, is all assuming that your company can approve such a large quantity request (exact numbers are unknown, but anywhere from 5 to 12 people should be expected, 12 is a very high estimate though).
Well, I have said enough for now, and I'm sure that I will be in touch with you very soon. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Brandon Boldenow

Responses (I am keeping the companies anonymous because this deals with multiple companies):
Response 1:
Yes we can do group Buys. We would need to see what people want and number to quote prices. At least 6 motors 10+ would be the best deal. Less than 6 could be done if all the same..The kit include the Motor complete) TRANS,
COMPUTER, WIRING HARNESS Main uncut, ignitor. power steering and alt. WE have found this to be the best way to sell as most people pay for but do not use the rest.... Kit usually DO NOT include down pipe, intercooler or piping, mounts. Parts for SOHC are available but extra.. Front mounted intercooler kit can be purchased at a discount with the motors as well as other electronics. Send a list of what you want and expected
quantities..Thanks
Response 2:
I would actually be happy to do a group buy for you guys, the only problem is that my importer doesn't have enough engines coming in until May 1st, and I can't give you any definite pricing until closer to that time, I can tell you what is coming in are 12 full front clips with body panels, so they will have EVERYTHING on the list, naturally with them having body panels, intercoolers, and most of the parts that some engine kits don't come with they aren't going to be extremely cheap, they are going to be in the pricing range of a normal engine kit probably but again I can only speculate on that until the date is closer and we know more information. I didn't know if May 1st was too far out for what you were looking at or not, but I can promise you it will be well worth the wait if it isn't.
Let me know what you think.
They are going to be a mix of S13 & S14, no S15.
Response 3:
Hi, Brandon. I wish we could offer a big discount, but we are just not big enough to do that with engines. We can offer free shipping for 3 or more paid for at the same time, price would be $2400 shipped for S13. No S14 or S15 in stock right now, sorry. S14 would be $3500 shipped if available. For that price you get the engine, trans, complete harness/ECU/ignitor/MAFS, all engine accessories, everything on the list, sometimes minor items like PS resevoir are not included, these are always available elsewhere in the US. You will need IC and piping, BOV or recirculating valve, fuel pump, clutch kit, electric fans, cone-type intake with MAF adapter, downpipe. Guaranteed to start and run with no smoking. Under 40,000 miles, taken from running cars.
Thanks
So, those are the responses, let me know what you think.

Doctor -
I might be interested if this goes down a couple months down the road. I am still not sure if I am even going SR, though. Would they be able to supply a CA in the buy? Number two sounds intriguing. Number three is the only one that mentioned miles on the motor, but the first and third are pretty similar. Some projected prices on the first and second would be nice.

I know for sure that the first one will not supply a CA if there are less than 10 people, but if there are 10 or more, I could check to see. As for the second one, I do not know about a CA, I would have to check. For the first one, we need an approximate number of people that would be in on the buy, and for the second one, they need the date to be a little bit closer to when they will be receiving their shipment. I thought that the second one sounds the best so far also. I will be keeping you guys up-to-date on this.
Anyone else interested or have questions?

I would say try to get mileage and startup guarantees on the first two. (They're probably there, just not listed.) Also, ask the second about the CA if you don't mind (just so I know my options )... I am liking the second one also, but with full clips, their estimated price would probably be a big factor. Thanks for all of the work, Dubble!!

I will get the startup guarantees and everything else as soon as I can, I will e-mail the first and second one about that, and the CA. I'm pretty sure that the second one will not know the mileage until the date is closer, but I will try to find that out as well. Also, it sounded like their clips would be about as much as a regular engine kit, but I won't make an assumption as to what that price could be, all I can say, is if that's true, that's a really really good price!

Give us some contact info like an e-mail address and phone number. $2500-$3500 is a lot of money to deal with if some of us have no clue who to turn to if something goes wrong. Good luck with your group buy.

Well, since everyone seems to like the second one the best, I will give the contact information for them here, if you want others, get in touch with me. Anyways, that's www.boostdynamics.com all information that you need is on their website, but in case you don't feel like looking,
[email protected] that's their e-mail address. I think I talked to Louis, but anybody should be able to help you.

I am interested and option two does sound the best. Also by doing a group buy how much are we saving? The reason is that I will have to eat noodles for a while so I can have the money but if im only saving like a 100 or 200 dollars then I can wait tell the end of the summer. If we get the front clip is there going to be anything missing from it? Also with the shipping can you find out if we will save on it if we ship it to a local shop vs our house? Obviously the the whole quality of the engine is a concern.. do they have the typical leak down test and BS like that?
Well best of luck and I hope this goes well.

i have emailed every shop that i could find about pricing on the SR, and the only answer i have gotten is from lostprojects. why arent these people sending me info? i need prices on a redtop (clip)!! cheap and soon. i blew my motor and i wanna drive my 240 again! when is this GB going down? please update details as often as possible. i will have $2500 within the week. so i am almost positive that i am in. thanks for any info.

Ok, I still haven't heard word back from Boost Dynamics on what the pricing would be, it's May 1st is still a ways away. Because of that though, I do not know how much money we would be saving buying it in a group, it sounds like a clip would cost about as much as a normal engine kit (which is about $2400 for S13's and $3500 for S14's, but I can't speak for them, so don't quote me on the price...I'm just trying to give you an idea).
Shipping I imagine would be the same as anywhere else, if you ship it to a shop, it costs less because they can use their forklift, or other means to get the engine out of the truck. Shipping it to a home, you would need a forklift provided, so it costs more.
A front clip comes with everything that was orignally in the engine bay, so no, nothing would be missing. I have not asked them as of yet if they do leak-down, and compression tests, but recently I did e-mail them to see if they had a startup guarantee and what exactly the guarantee would be. I can find out to see if they do any testing on the engine, but I only know of one place that does that (Unstable Hybrids).
SRskillaDET, I don't know why you aren't getting any of your e-mails returned, but I know how frustrating it is, one of mine still has not been returned. As stated before though, the GB will not happen until May 1st because Boost has not gotten their motors in yet, and has not quoted us a price. Keep saving your money though, you'll need it for misc. parts, and back up cash in case something goes wrong.

Does anybody know what shipping is normally for a front clip? DrD thanks for putting in all the hard work on this.
DrDubbleB

Shipping for front clips usually ranges from $300 to $500 depending on where you are located. I would go high with the $500 estimate just to be on the safe side for now, but I'm sure that it would be less.

those prices are pretty similar to Heavy Throttle's prices without giving a discount, and I know that they are very particular about the engines they buy and that their engines are high quality.
