View Full Version : Open diff or vlsd

Ok guys, I always thought my car was open diff. I was bored today and decided to do burnouts and stuff. It did two burnouts from both wheels. When doing donuts though, its not very consistent though. Both tires do allow me to do burnouts but its like one wheel spins faster than the other. That was the case when doing a brakestand and spinning the tires. THey both spun fast and then the left wheel began to slow down. I'm assuming the power was transferred to the right since it has less traction. I then did it at another spot and the left tire was spinning faster than the right.
These give me signs of vlsd but im not sure. Another thing is that it has the limited slip cover on the differential. Besides opening up for sure and looking at it, is there any other ways to confirm this.
Or can someone describes me how an open diff is supposed to respond when doing burnouts and donuts. Both wheels spin on open?

Nevermind, I searched again and did find something. Im going to jack the car up and put it in gear and try to spin the wheel. So we'll see how that goes.
Here's the link for anyone else curious:

you coulda saved yourself a lot of time, and popped your hood and looked for ABS. If you have abs you'll only have two lines coming out of the m/c, if you dont have abs then you'll have 3 lines coming out of the master (like me :(). The abs/vlsd was a package, if you have abs, you have vlsd, and vice versa.

Please don't post while drunk, sir, I have seen one with ABS and LSD, I have seen vice versa... Having one is no guarantee that one has the other...

ABS cars are supposed to have the VLSD although people have opened the houseing and found an open diff. Non-ABS cars are supposed to be open but some people have found VLSDs in them. Seems Nissan got a little lazy with this.

You could jack the back end up...
spin one wheel.. and if the other wheel spins the same way you have LSD, if it spins the opposite you're open diff...

brake stands=bad news. You can really tear up a ton of stuff doing that (unless you have one of those brake deals that locks up just the front brakes, give me a brake it is late and I am tired, no pun inteaded). I blew three trannies and smoked a set of brakes in my f350 doing this (yah, yah I know. FORD, you only make that mistake once :bash: ). 36's and 30psi didnt help matters.
Why three tranny's, the first two were covered under warranty, the third time the dealer told me to get Fu*!ed :boink: . I learned real quick not to do it when I had to pay for the broken parts

haha, yeah, I know wat you mean. I do agree though, I've seen many cars without abs and had lsd (my bros s13 coupe). I was thinking maybe I was just as lucky as he was. Whats wrong with nissan anyways, having non consistent choices for lsd. Maybe it was an option afterall back then?? :bigok:

maybe you should stop blaming a good truck for your own stupid mistakes. that's like driving your car in the river and getting pissed when it doesn't float.

that truck was the biggest pos I have ever owned. It was supposed to be the biggest, baddest thing on the planet. the only thing that was big and bad was the problems it had, from trannys to tires to air bags to hubs to the fricking front drive line falling off!! If you buy a truck and use as a truck and the thing fricking breaks consistently, it is a pos. maybe I just got a lemon. My stupid mistake was brake stands, thats why I stated it, so others can learn from my mistakes! The last tranny that was put in it, we installed a shift kit. Tranny problem solved
I couldnt wait to get rid of that pos

I've done dual-tire burnouts with open diff.

Brake thingy that locks up only the fronts = line lock
ABS does not mean you have VLSD. If you don't have Super HICAS and you live in the USA and own a S13, you do NOT have VLSD.
Brake stands are fun. :)
Also laying down rubber with a VLSD doesn't always yield two tire lines... VLSDs are slow, some are old etc etc etc
Do some donuts instead and have someone watch the rear wheels. :P

checked and yup, its open. thanks for the tips. Yeah i guess the shitty tires was the cause for the two wheel donuts and burnouts.
