I have been looking for a Ring and pinion gear for my 98 240sx for awhile now and i came across a 1984 to 1989 300ZX - 3.700 R&P Set for the r200. It has the same measurements as ours, i think:"The ring gear has an OD of 200mm (R200), an ID of 128mm and uses a 12mm ring gear bolt with a 1.25 thread pitch." Can I use this in my s14 lsd or do I have to get a N/A 300zx diff then change the R&P?
The reason I want to go with a 3.7 is because I really don't care about off the line speed, I just want to drop the RPM's for the turbo.
Thanks

Yes, you can easily swap in this final drive to make yourself slower ;/

thanks, althougth I am wondering why they have different model #s. For the 240sx one that they had offered at one time the model number is 38100-00001 and for the one that I am looking to buy is 38100-14S01. Has anyone ever done this? What the heck do I do about the speedo gear then?

i wonder if the speedo gear of a 300zx would fit in the 240's tranny.

yeah, how do you find this crap out? buy and return it if it doesn't fit? Can't exactly do that with a $640 R&P gear. hehe

Nissan Motorsports sells a lot of R&Ps for the R200 case, any of the same vehicle's gearsets will swap in (Z32, S13, J30).

Does anyone know if the speedo gear from a 300zx would fit the 240sx?

Not sure, but you can buy speedometer pinions through Motorsports also in various tooth counts.

not through www.courtesyparts.com. They say that they are "NO LONGER AVAILABLE" for the 98 240sx. but i can get stuff for the 89 300zx no problem, thats why i was asking if it would fit.

You can recalibrate your speedo using the potentiometer on the back of your gauge cluster. It is a little phillips head screw.

Why do you want to drop the rpms for your turbo? Any extra load on the turbo created by the taller gears will be vastly outweighed by your decrease in torque multiplication. You will not only sacrifice off-the-line speed but accelleration EVERYWHERE.

Some of them are NLA, pick up a 2004 Motorsports catalog to get the part numbers.

I E-mailed nissanmotorsports a while back:
ME:
Hello, one your site you have listed a 3.7:1 ring and pinion gear for the 98
> 240sx differential but it says that it is no longer for sale. I was wondering
> if you can help me out by telling me how I can get another ping and
pinion
> gear of the same ratio. Would the 300zx ring and pinion gear work with mods
> done to it?
Them:
Unfortunately once they are discontinued, they are gone, they
other models are not the same, so they would not work.

So why am I getting different answers here? I am confused.

what the hell..... ok, well what I am doing is getting a 300zx R&P gear used from a R200 from a friend and I will try it out on my 240sx. I just want to make sure since its alot of money for the NISMO one. Thanks for all the help guys.

It's worth a try, let us know if it works!!! P.S. ...those gears would be perfect for a KA-T ....it would make 1st gear driveable at stoplights/stopsigns.

LOL - wtf, you all are crazy. I'm going to drop in my 4.3 fd and spank you all the way up to 159mph!!!!!

How big is your turbo Fdapolice? Unless you just have a very big turbo that needs vast amounts of load to get the turbine spinnin, a taller gear will just make you slower. If you have traction problems, buy some good tires and an LSD. Putting in taller gears is not the answer unless you want to drive your car at 175mph.

You don't care about the accelleration?? Then why did you buy the turbo kit? Are you building a top speed runner for the salt flats?

What I mean is I don't care about drag. I just want something that is fast and good on gas. I drive the turnpike everyday. Why does the turboed 200sx in the UK come with the same gearing that I want? Obviously this isn't an off the wall idea.

shorter gears are quicker, taller gears are good on gas. You will get better gas mileage with your proposed 3.7 gears, but you will be slower, even on the highway. You would have to drive a million miles before the savings in gas will offset the cost of the new gears.

But hey, it is your car and I'm not going to try and tell you what to do. I'm done with this thread. I just hope the people reading it later don't think that 3.7fd is going to make their car quicker.
