I take my car to get painted, and I told him I want the best "package" they have, which would be about $1250. We then agreed on $1000 cash. Included in this was Prep work, base coat, clear coat, remove dents, install and paint new bumper, and paint some trim flat black. He told me it would take 3-4 days. Well 2 weeks and 2 days later, I go to get my car and it looks like crap. It looks like they didnt even use clear coat in the back of the car, theres tons of little dings that you can see EVERYWHERE, it looks like he didnt even sand the bottom of my pig nose bumper, he just sprayed over it, theres over spray on my head lights, my muffler got painted, my trims didnt get painted, you can see in 2 places where the paint ran and dried. And like an idiot i pay for it, then go home and realize what the **** i just did. So i go back there and just talked to him normally, and he said bring it back next week and he will WET SAND AND BUFF IT for me. He didnt wet sand it yet!?!? He says it costs $300 to do that and he will do it for free. And im almost 100% sure that that isnt gonna get my dings out. Oh and not too mention when I brought up that my muffler got painted he told me i can just go to home depot buy some silver spray paint and it would look fine. So I want your guys advice, should I let him wet sand/buff it then go from there, or should I just ask for half my money back and say ill get the better business bureau involved? I need to hear from you guys today cause im going back there tomorrow. Thanks

That's about what you get for a Grand. I can't say that I'm not suprized how it turned out. I can not belived that you payied for something that you did not belive was what you asked for.

Fight them till you get what you wanted.

why didnt you do it yourself, just rent a paint gun, its not hard you just need a few minutes of practice. I learned in one day how to do an ok job.

Wetsanding and buffing costs $250 at most shops due to the fact that if properly done, it will take a full day of work. Properly done means no or very little orange peel, it has been fully buffed, and polished to remove all scratches and swirl marks.

A quality basecoat/clearcoat job will cost anywhere from $2000-$3000 depending on the shop and the amount of work they do on the car.

No maybe i should of though. The place is called "affordable paint and body shop". I even have a estimate printed out here, that said he will straighten out my hatch deck lid, paint my weather stripping flat back, and and remove my driver and pass. door trim, and he didnt. When i pointed out my muffler got painted too, he told me i can buy a can of spray paint from home depot and it will take car of that. So there are things that i can have an argument with. I just want to know if you all would still get the car wet sanded/buffed, which im sure wont get rid of the dings, OR ask for money back, say youll take legal action, and call the BBB, and possibly get nothing out of it. Lets hear.

You shouldn't have paid, let alone taken delivery.

That said, you got about $1000 worth of work. A quality repaint with a single state paint generally will run in the $2000-3000 range, not counting bodywork (pulling dents, smoothing panels, etc...)

YOu should got a fairly good paintjob for a grand, first and in legal terms there is nothing you can do but take it back. They have agreed to "finish" the job, Yes the wet sanding and buffing will take care of the drips but the dings will still be there. THis is a common occurance among paint shops, the tell you it will take 4 days and ends up taking 4 weeks.....My suggestion: take back, check the repairs and if still not satisfy keep taking it back until completely satisfied, remember that there is still a warranty with the service, so you can take it back any time. IF still not satisfied then threaten them with legal action.

Good luck, man!

BBB is a joke...ive ran into a few problems where have filed with them and they didnt do anything but "Give a stern talking to the buisness" Your better off having him do the work and let him know that its not what you payed for. and if everything still isnt to your liking i guess you could involve a lawyer...which would cost you more then your paintjob and car itself. So do what you feel you need to do

Every state has a department of consumer affairs. In California, we have the Department of Consumer Affairs. http://www.dca.ca.gov/ I've had to use their services once due to a shady smogcheck mechanic that ripped me off. I discovered his theivery about two weeks after he serviced my car. The Department of Consumer Affairs was able to get my money back for services I paid for but didn't need.

In your case, you might want to contact the Florida Division of Consumer Services

http://www.800helpfla.com/aboutus.html

They should be able to refer you to the proper office that can handle your claim. If the investigator finds that the body shop did not do the work as indicated on the estimate, then the body shop is liable for the repairs. The investigator will give the body shop two options: 1). Correct the work or 2). Refund the money.

As shocking as you guys might find this, there are actually some government agencies that Do actually work and lookout for the rights of us consumers.

Anyhow hope this helps.

it isnt true that you cant get decent paint for a grand...i know a whole shit load of places that i wll give you good ass paint jobs for about $1000 - $1400...ive also had experienced with them and was pretty stoked with my paintjob.

I used to have a 1999 Honda civic hatchback that was in pretty bad shape and on top of it, i got hit on the driver's side door. Insurence paid for the paint job (which was about $1400). so my brother took me to some underground paint shop place way hidden in a shit hole behind all these factories.

i was nervous. the place looked like a bomb erupted in it...car parts every where...paint stains on the walls. very unprofessional... :tweak: there were a bunch of vietnamese fob  workers that had beer bottles everywhere, and were smokin ciggarrettes while painting. I wasnt sure if i should do it...but i trusted my bro and gave it a try. :x:

turns out...when i got my car back, the paint job was pretty awesome. nice and shiny BRAND NEW looking metalic gunmetal grey civic hatch. the paint job was almost flawless. the metalic was hella nice and glosscoat was nice and smooth.they hooked me up good! they even fixed some damaged parts in my interior that i asked them to fix without additional charge. :D

the paint never faded or changed overtime, some kid aroudnt he corner form my house bought it and i check it out everytime i drive by. good as new.

whateever you do, just dont go Macco or Earl Scheib's...they do some crappy ass paint jobs. gloss coat will fade in about a year...word.

anways...I SAY GET YOUR MONEY BACK AND DO SOME RESEARCH ON PLACES BEFORE YOU GET YOUR BABY PAINTED.

for a $1000 paintjob most places wont bother taking off weather stripping and the trim on doors. they will just tape them up, but then paint will still get on the edges and when they're done with the job, u have the edge of the weather stripping cracking because it is tearing from the paint on the body.

I had a similar experience but "luckily," people across Tampa said they had seen my car out on the town, being raped. I had them by the balls. I cut them a credit card check for $800 (original cost was $1300), stating that I'd dispute the charge if they didn't reshoot the car, detail it, and some other stuff. Rather than try and fight the credit card company and maybe come out w/ $0, they did the right thing in the end. The full story behind it is here:

Never pay cash, always use credit cards or have credit cards cut you checks. If you threaten with the BBB, they'll laught at you. If you threaten with a chargeback, they'll get their ass in gear.

I would suggest going back and talking about the agreement you made such as the dings, and the parts that were suppose to be painted. He should cover you for the exhaust because that's BS as well. As far as the car being sprayed, you cannot really do anything about that because what did you expect for $1000?

what did you expect for $1000

Something better than what you get at Maaco for 500. right? A 500 dollar Maaco job probably wouldnt be as bad as this. It seems like anything between 300-1000 dollars is the same thing, so just go for the cheapest price and expect the worst. Or go to a reputable shop and pay 3 grand.

True, without pictures it's hard to imagine how bad it really is. Chances are once they buff it out, most of the orange peel will probably go away but from the sounds of it....you got ripped. Maaco/EarlShire/yourshop will give cruddy service if they feel they "hooked" you up, because the agreed price was $1000, originally $1300....they can always say, "Well we hooked you up." I hate that....

I just got my car done for 1,500 $$ and had to take it back 3 times, Im very detailed and every time I will find something like a drip or crack, like during washing or close inspection. Things you dont see in just an initial inspection. The guy was more than happy to fix them, so makes me happy and everybody is happy. The end result was fairly good. And yes I did take all trim, moulding, side lights, tail lights, sunroof, etc off myself, or you are taking a chance of them breaking something else for you.... :rant2:

Small dings will only go away if filled and sand blocked, that was one of my issues...the wavy look on side rear panels, is not eye pleasing and shows lack of attention from the shop...
