don't quote me on this, but there is window stain paint you can buy, as well as lens paint, or they could just put colored tint film on there.

They are films, much like window tint, applied to the headlights, such as the ones found at http://www.lamin-x.com
Real race cars usually use yellow, not any of the blue/überhyperwhite/purple colors. and this is because yellow works best in bad weather conditions, and is easiest on the eyes for endurance racing.

I can trade you my "tinted" yellow headlights for your clear ones if you want.

My friend has it ( I think its going on his WRX Race Car), its pretty thick stuff, I would assume its just so they don't brake from rocks and whatnot.

Not just that; in Le Mans GTS/GT class cars have to run yellow headlights to differentiate them from LMP1/2 prototype cars (white headlights)

not sure if its actually window stain paint or what but basically what you can paint a window with and still see through it. try the paint section of a hardware store, or maybe a glass company??

another reason why they run tinted headlights in lemans is that there is actually layers of film across the headlights and when the car comes into the pit they just peel off a layer and its back to brand new again with great visibility
this is IIRC though, but i do recall someone on speed talking about this

That is true, however this is not the case for the prototype cars (LMP1/LMP2 formerly LMP900/675). They are not tinted.
Only the two lower classes are tinted so that if you see white headlights coming up from behind you and you run in the GTS/GT class, you know to let the faster car pass.
